Malay Kuih: Lontong Shiok Ah!

My wife insists that I need to blog this particular lontong because it is in her words "to die for". Yeah, she's been going on about this lontong for months. She has it for breakfast almost every Saturday without fail just before doing her weekly grocery shopping. She even brought mum there and mum ended up going there mid-week to get her lontong fix. So, like any good husband, I followed my wife's instructions and brought my camera to blog the place.......after much incessant "persuading".

So what's lontong anyway? I see it as a sort of reverse rice dish. The usual way to eat rice is to have the rice on a plate and put the gravy on top. In lontong, you have the gravy on a plate and you put the rice on top. Ok it may be a stretch of the imagination, but lontong is essentially compressed rice in a spicy coconut gravy yah?

Anyway the lontong here is really quite good. I haven't really been big on lontong but I would have to say that this one is pretty darn good. The gravy is just about right. Not too spicy or too rich, such that you can really drink it all up. The best part is the way the soft rice blends with the gravy and the kerisik (fried grated coconut). My wife insists that it is a 4.5/5 and all you husbands out there (who wish to enjoy a peaceful existence) would agree with me that it is best to just give a nod and say "Yes Dear".



Anyway, apart from the lontong, the stall also sells a variety of homemade, traditional kuihs which are quite good. They have tapioca cakes, kuih kosui, doughnuts and many others. The kuih kosui was specially good. It had just the right texture, springy yet creamy at the same time and just about the right amount of sweetness.

Conclusion

Have not really looked into Singapore's most famous and tastiest lontong but I have to say that this one is good enough to be included in such a list.

    But in all honestly, I have enjoyed this delicious plate of lontong, thing is it was back in Jurong Camp when the auntie used to make it when she "feels like it"...it was thick, just the way I like it...don't think her stall is there anymore though, ORD last year, plus I think the canteen went through a major renovation.

    Hey Amagada,

    There is a stall at Bt Merah View food centre that I go to when I feel the urge for lontong. Look for the DBS ATM, make a beeline straight right of ATM, u will see a queue on weekdays for the teochew porridge stall. The lontong is next to it.
    Mee soto is good. Both usually sellout by noon. Ieat blog on the teochew porridge stall recently.
    Found a gem of a stall today at Shun Li Bldg at Kaki Bukit. Will post once I tried the lontong. So far the food I tried is good but the cook very "atas". cheerio

    I dont like lontong but being a good Husband (haha)I brought my wife there as Lontong is one of her favourite.She told me the lontong got no power.I took some but agreed with her. I find it expensive at $3.50 a plate and ingredients is so little.
    Can I siggest the one at East Point Simei, a stall selling lontong, meesiam n ayam penyet. It is not in East Point itself but the coffee shop to the end of Simei MRT station.

    Try the lontong and mee rebus from this shop called Zaiton at The Arcade, Raffles Place. It's yummmilicious good!

    Just an update to my previous comment. The stall at Bt Merah View is named "Muslim Food" Add is #01-381
    Closed on Mon. Operate only till about 12.30pm or the food sold out. Went there yesterday 12.30pm, stall open but food gone, aaarrrgh!!! (They were "making" the lontong rice.)

    Agree with Chaozhouzi the lontong at Bukit Merah View FC is very good - along with their mee siam, mee soto and mee rebus.

    I've tried almost everything in this stall and it has yet to fail.

    The old skool fishball noodles next door also pretty good.
