Yi Sheng Hokkien Mee ABC Food Centre Part 1 of 4

Remember eating Hokkien Mee when you were a kid? Assuming you are my age, then you might have been eating from this particular store which has been around for 40 years. What they say about practise makes perfect is very true. This is one excellent hokkien mee particularly if you like your hokkien mee with thin bee hoon and swimming in thick gravy.

And if you like chilli, this particular chilli will make sure you return again and again. Mr Toh tells me that there are dried anchovies and dried prawns in the chlli. A secret receipe handed down from father to son. In fact, uncle was so passionate about the chilli that at one stage I was wondering if he was selling chilli, with Hokkien Mee as the condiment. I usually don't take my hokkien mee with chilli, but today I was lapping it up.

Take note of the extra large wok which ensures that every strand of the mee gets its fair share of attention from the heat. He took over the business from his father in 1989. Oh, and by the way, here's a little secret, Mr Toh is Hainanese not Hokkien!!

What's better then a mouthful of shiokalicious Hokkien Mee? A mouthful of shiokalicious Hokkien Mee with a piece of perfectly grilled Sio Bak, that's what! If you have not tried this before, you are being deprived of one of the very simple (sinful) pleasures in life. When you put the noodles and the Sio Bak in your mouth, the first thing you that delights you is the crunch of the pork rind followed by a burst of flavour as the juices from the pork combine perfectly with the savoury gravy of the hokkien mee. And as you savour the taste, you can also appreciate the "pang" (tasty savoury smell) smell when you exhale through your nose. This excellent Sio Bak was purchased from Fatty Cheong's who are also in the same FC. (That's another blog)

Conclusion

Different style of Hokkien Mee from Kim's at Joo Chiat. Chilli definitely wins Kim's. Noodles wise, Kim's is a little more QQ and has less gravy then Yi Sheng. Hard fight. Both are good in their own ways but I just feel that Yi Sheng just lacks that knockout punch. For the chilli lovers, that knockout punch might just be the chilli.

4.25/5 Definitely one of the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore and definitely better then Nam Sing Hokkien Mee which made it in the Makansutra Hawker Legends list.

The best hokkien mee I've had is at the coffeeshop along east coast road after the stretch with Al Fornos and Margaritas.

Everyone pretty much goes there for the HKM, easily distinguishable. Do try it!

Agree with Nicolette.

It's called Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee - they sell Or Luak (Fried Oyster Omelette) & Fried Carrot Cake too.

It's located along a stretch of food paradise that boasts restaurants and eataries like: Al Forno's, Margarita's, Hong Kong Street Chun Kee Katong, Hong Kong Cafe, Beach Road Prawn Mee & Chai Chee Noodle Village (that's why katong - or the east - is THE food haven) along East Coast Road; near the junction of Telok Kurau Road.

Fried Hokkien Mee draws versatile views because different people prefer different styles of it.

Personally, living in MArine Parade/Katong - my FAVOURITE fried prawn mee is the abovementioned one. MUST TRY, in my opinion.

Do review them~ =)

Yes have tried them. Very shiok. But I find they use a lot of lard such that you can only really eat a small plate. Around the area is Kim's at Joo Chiat Place. Check out my blog under the title Hokkien Mee Reloaded and Hokkien Mee Riddle solved finally (Aug)

try the Yi Sheng HKM today

IMHO, no way near the old airport rd stall at all.

noodle got heavy alkaline taste.

staff was rude too. was there at 1059hrs and when walking towards the stall and did not even have to chance to open my voice, she just raise her hands to shoo me off and when ask what time the stall open, she then said 11am. I told she it's 11am and she just keep quiet.

Just tried this hokkien mee today. Was quite a let-down because there was no taste to the gravy and the dish was dominated by the "waxy"/alkaline taste of the yellow noodles.

I am using a Canon 350D with a 60mm 2.8 Macro Lens. However, these shots were taken with a Canon G1 because my 350D was in the workshop. You can see the difference in the sharpness and colour saturation in the pics

i am a regular to this HKM for 40 years. the lady never see her before was very rude, the owner is a nice guy. poor fellow allow this kind of staff to be around.

This is my hubby's favourite hokkien mee stall. We live in the area, and I practically have to stop him from eating it every day.

Hmm..don't quite recall the lady there being rude. Just don't expect her to chit chat with you.

This HKM tastes better tapau-ed. Let it steep for a while. A bummer that they serve it on styrofoam plates if you eat it at the hawker centre though. I'm did a double-take when I saw a proper plate in your picture.

Just had this for lunch today. It's VERY NICE. :) Had been having bad HKM lately at various places and this was like way way way better. I'm wondering whether their standard varies depending on the quality of the noodle? Coz the one i had today was really nice. No alkaline taste as mentioned by other reviewers. The lady helper was not very friendly. Haa~~ but not to the extent of being rude. The boss was nice and smiley though. And I'm happy coz he really took his time to fry my plate of $3 noodle such that it was really aromatic and nicely coated. Yummmms... The chilli was very good too. You can see the small bits of prawns inside. Not too spicy hot and it adds a lot of flavour to the noodle. The lime was big and juicy. I asked for one extra lime and the amt of sourness was juz nice. The only thing that was lacking was pork lard -- *keke* The abscence of it to me was a bit of a let-down.

they have quite good satay too. Just don't know if they serve them during lunch.

hmmm I think I have never tried this before. must try must try~ one day.

taukwa said...

jems, while you are trying this HKM, can also try other nice food. claypot rice, lor mee, satay bee hoon. The rest have been blogged by ieat liao.

jems said...

taukwa, I actually go to ABC market quite often keke. My most often eat is the taiwanese porridge. There used to be a stall that sells really really good melt in da mouth chicken feet. Is that the stall ieat has blogged? Have tried the claypot rice too :) satay beehoon wanted to eat the other time but already sold out...

taukwa said...

oops, sorry, i have not heard of this chicken feet. Dim sum kind or wanton noodles kind?

jems said...

hi taukwa, wanton noodles kinda :) it used to be a stall or 2 away from the taiwanese porridge pre reno period. the dessert stall among them was very good also but now I also dunno if it still exists...

ieat said...

Go try Wow Wow West, they got featured in Lian He Zao Bao last Sunday because the boss gave his old stall at Bukit Merah to an ex-convict and opened a new stall here in ABC. And his western food is very value for money.

taukwa said...

should this continue at the ABC FC forum thread, its getting long and not on Yi Sheng already? Anyway, since I am already here...........

If I remember correctly, 2 stalls away (pre reno) from Taiwan Porridge was Fatty Cheong (which has been blogged).

And yes, the dessert stall is still around but at the other end of the fc now.

Yes do continue to discuss the good eats at ABC in the forum:
