Our new Facebook Group and Twitter

Currently we have an active group of kakis who meet to discuss about food in our forum. But I realise that not everyone likes to use the forum and it has its limitation in terms of being able to alert readers to the upcoming makan outings. So, I have also updated the ieatshootipost facebook group for those readers who are users of facebook.

I think there are many advantages of the facebook group. First, it makes it easier to organize events, especially imprompto ones like lunch gatherings. If you are a facebook user, then it is easier for you to keep up to date with what is happening. The forum remains a veritable source of info of hawker food places which is organized according to hawkers centres and different food types. This is one area that facebook group does not perform as well.

The other application that I have also set up is Twitter. After playing with it for a week, I thought that this application is best used to give quick updates on food that I am currently eating that is worth recommending. However, there is one problem as I cannot get Twitter to update to the Facebook group. It updates to my personal Facebook profile, so I still need to see how it can be fixed.

At any rate, if you want to be kept up to date on upcoming makan sessions and any promotions that might be coming up, do sign up for the applications. But at the end of the day, what is best is to come for one of the makan sessions so that you can get to know our kakis and to enjoy some good food!

As I am quite new to Facebook and Twitter, I would very much appreciate it if you all can give me your advise and tips on how best to use the applications.

Cheers!

My interview with Pulse Magazine

Pulse Magazine is the NUS Medical Society Publication ie the magazine for Med Students.

For those people who think that Doctors are all really health conscious and eat only salad and wholewheat organic stuff, then perhaps you don't know enough Doctors! Just last week I was having dinner with some colleagues from Malaysia and all we were talking about was the fantastic hawker food in Ipoh, KL and JB! The key, as always, is moderation or in other words "Never waste your calories on yucky food!"

Anyway, it is good to know that our new generation of Doctors are still very much into hawker food, so we might be nurturing the next generation of Food Blogger Doctors!

A Happy New Year to one and all!

Here's wishing all our readers a very Happy New Year!

Although 2009 looks to be quite a rough year ahead, we all know that there is always one thing that brings joy to the heart and that is food and friends. So even if we got to cut down on the more expensive gourmet meals, we can still gather with friends at the hawker centre and have a good time. So we will continue to source out the best and most value for money eats around Singapore. Remember that you too have a role to play by letting us know your favourite eating places.

The blog is now in its 3rd year of existence and very soon we will reach 5 million hits. Thanks for all your support and also to our makan kakis who have been organizing the various makan sessions. Now, if you have been a lurker, please do come out of the closet this year and post a comment and then come and join one of our makan sessions so that we can get to know you! Our makan kakis are a friendly and welcoming bunch and it really doesn't matter if you are a chef or if you can't tell the difference between basmati and jasmine rice. As long as you like to eat and make new friends, you are most welcome to join us. The makan sessions are organized through our forum which you can access here.

This year, we will also be having our very first overseas makan trip which is being organized in conjunction with Canon. During our trip to Penang, we will be joined by prominent Penang bloggers CK Lam and Penang Tua Pui. I look forward to meeting with some of our readers who have signed up for the trip.

I am also looking at upgrading some of the functions of the blog to make it more user friendly for everyone. Throughout the year, I have been receiving many feedback on how the blog layout can be improved and I am seriously considering a change to the Wordpress platform so that I can introduce more functions to the blog. So look out for a revamped ieatishootipost this year.

Even though we will be making changes to the blog, rest assured our mission blurb still remains the same:

Mission Statement

Ensemble Cast of Ieatishootipost

If you have read about our Charity Makan Session, you would have realized that quite a few people were involved in the organization of the event. These people voluntarily give up their time and money to make the event a success and they are also the ones who seek out the best food to eat around Singapore and report them in our forum.

They are as much a part of ieatishootipost as I am, so today I just want to take the opportunity to introduce to you to the Ensemble Cast of ieatishootipost. I really depend on these guys to support me by recommending places to blog as well as sacrificing their calories to taste the food with me and adding their inputs to the blog as well as the forum.

So here they are in my particularly peculiar order:

Smart

Uncle smart has the best life. Semi retired, he just spends his time looking for food to eat! If you need a directory on Singapore food, make sure you get his hp number.

khim

We call her the bottomless pit. If you are at dinner with her, make sure you get your share before she launches her assault. She never stops, even after dessert. She's our blog monitoress as well as forum moderator so don't play play.

sumosumo

We like to think of our "Big Ass Moderator" as the Simon Cowell of the blog. A serious foodie, his taste buds are hard to please and he is passionate about his food. Don't get him angry.... you won't like him when he is angry.

Liverpool

Owner of Good Morning Nanyang Cafe. I met liverpool when I first blogged his Cafe in the early days. Liverpool makes one of the best cups of kopi in Singapore but still drinks kopi from everywhere else! Go figure.

Damien

Grew up the son of a serious foodie, he probably ate all the best food in Singapore before he hit puberty. (or should I say, "in order to" hit puberty?) Damien seems to always know whatever is happening in the food scene. I met him when I blogged his stall last year. His rating system ranges from a "Cannot Make it" to "This is good leh" and anything in between gets a "Ok lah".

Cactuskit

One of our latest 2nd gen kakis, Cactuskit is the king of the forum. He is a gentle giant who supports the gahment by having 4 kids (and counting?). Bit of an aunty killer, he works his way into the hearts of unsuspecting hawker aunties some of whom have adopted him as their godson.

Holydrummer

We met at Astons by coincidence where he was one of the first to taste the newly created ieat Superburger. He was also one of the first ones to blog about ieatishootipost. An ardent foodie who does not compromise on taste, he and the holyfamily comprising his Holybunny and his Holybro can eat so much that one can only cry "Holy Macaroni!"

Holybunny

Don't be misled by her apparently genteel nickname, she can be quite opinionated, K?

Holybro

Doesn't know the word STOP. Unlike the rest of us, Holybro still has room to grow and he is making use of that excuse to eat as much as he can.

Jems

A lady who keeps insisting that 45kg is fat (Well it is IF you are 1m tall, and she's not). If not for the fact that she still eats despite complaining, I would have diagnosed her with anorexia. Jems is out there to prove that one can still be a foodie but not like all the good stuff like lard and chicken skin. Jems is our food correspondent for the West and also our moderator in the forum.

Wahcow

Always on a lookout for good deals, Wahcow keeps our forum updated on all the latest specials from the magazines he reads, then complains that he can't keep up with his credit card payments. In which case his Cowpeh and Cowbu comes in to help chew the curd. He is another of our upcoming photographers so watch out for his pics on the blog.

Taukwa

Our resident Soya Bean expert and the forum's most eligible bachelor, he is known in the forum as
Adonis, He-Man the Master of the Universe, and Captain Marvel! He is very much available but only if you are a Tau Huay, Tau Hu or Tau Nee. Tau Poks and Chao Tau Hus need not apply.

Champagne

The woman who used to be known as winelearner. I guess she has learnt enough.

Fashionfoodie - A big name in the fashion industry, this Teochew ah Hia has access to all the gourmet food in Singapore, but still prefers to eat a simple steamed Peh Dor He anytime!

Amagada - The woman behind ieat

and the list continues......

New members keep getting added, so if you think that you would like to vicariously waste some calories for the benefit of others, then do join up at the forum and come for our next makan session!

What to do next?

Check out what these guys are up to by visiting the FORUM! See you there.

Summary

Local well-known food blogger ieatishootipost.blogspot.com commenced in 2006, it had accumulated 1 million hits a year after; 2 years later – today, the blog was even nominated for “Most Insightful Blog” category in the “S’pore Blog Awards” organized by Omy.

Doctor Food Blogger

When the owner of local well-known food blog ieatishootipost.blogspot.com, Dr. Leslie Tay (39 years old), started the blog more than 2 years ago, little did he imagine the recognition he would have today.

As a start, he only wanted to make up for a deprived childhood. “When I was young, my father seldom brought us out for meals, I had no idea where all the famous hawker food are!”

In 2006, he began to be interested the Singapore local cuisine, always going online, looking for chicken rice, char kway teow, hokkien prawn mee, etc.. through word of mouth. “I wanted to make up for my deprived childhood in a big way!”

But he realized that no matter how good the comments came from readers, the blog will not be persuasive and convincing enough just with word and no pictures of the good food. “I’m interested in photography, as far as I can recall, there seems to be no one in the local scene that have used photos of hawkers’ fare as a main topic. I was wondering, why don’t I take pictures while writing the blog, recording the experiences and photos at the same time.”

So, in August 2006, ieatishootipost commenced, it accumulated 1 million hits within a year and now 2 years later, the blog has been nominated for “Most Insightful Blog” category in the “S’pore Blog Awards” organized by Omy.

Family doctor’s Extra Curriculum

It’s Leslie’s identity as a doctor which adds on to the appeal of the food blog.

Everyday at 2pm, when he is taking his afternoon break at Karri Family Clinic situated at Tampines Street 83, he would drop his white doctor’s robe, take off his stethoscope, jumped into the identity of a cuisine reporter; before the opening of the clinic’s evening shift at 6.30pm, he uses this time to run all over Singapore, in search of food worth recommending, then "serves” up all these mouth-watering , fantastic findings onto his food blog which gets 8,000 hit daily.

ieat has got nearly thousand of posts to date. Leslie’s style is neither braggy nor pretentious, but like the media, he knows how to capture one’s curiosity using interesting ideas like “Where is the President’s favorite poh piah and favorite teh tarik stall located?” to attract readers. How many hidden gems are there in hawker centres located from North to South locally? Leslie will find out for you. Or, if you have something in mind, you can search based on the type of local fares like bak kut teh, beef hor fun, chicken rice, etc.. With one click, you get to see what the food looks like and where to find it.

2 months ago, Leslie even started a forum, creating different interesting topics for the 800 plus registered readers. Leslie explained with pride that this forum connect foodies together. Next, he would even hope to create another avenue where all food bloggers can gather together to exchange thoughts.

Sponsors knocking on the door

Food bloggers like Dr. Leslie Tay have increased in numbers the past 2 years. 2 years ago when Leslie started writing the food blog, there were only a handful of food blogs. Now, there is a long list of local food bloggers, some of the better known ones even catch the attention of F&B proprietors. There is yet a new trend, that is, more and more F&B companies are eagerly engaging PR companies to join and manage food bloggers. These e-generation food reporters are challenging the traditional food critics, especially when youngsters nowadays like to surf the net, food blogging on the boundless internet also manages to capture foreign readers, attracting these foreign foodies into our country for different kinds of cuisine.

Dr. Tay revealed that he, just like that media reporters, often receives invitations from various restaurants, hawkers as well as PR companies, to try out their dishes. Even visual & electronic equipment brands like Creative & Cannon came knocking on Leslie’s door, expressing interest on sponsoring and introducing the fantastic gadgets through Leslie’s blog and thus, delivering the message through the internet.

Also, readers from as far as Ukraine, England and United States had treated Leslie’s blog as a food guide, often sending him emails: “I’ll be coming over to Singapore on this particular date, what should I eat?” Leslie used to reply every single email, giving them some recommendations. Now, he would invite these readers to browse the blog, or join the internet forum and let the other readers provide the recommendations.

From Makan Sessions …

Using “fussy” to describe his taste buds, Leslie has a mum who is a chef. He has a strong interest in cooking too. When he was studying in Australia, he used to cook by himself. His best dishes would be sweet and sour pork as well as various soups.

Speaking of how he chose his food entries, Leslie replied: “Some are just fate, other times, I will tend to look for dishes with a more interesting angle." Have you heard of sakura chicken? There is a farm in Malaysia using Japanese’ method to rear chicken. Cultivating chicken without any injections, yet the chicken remains juicy and tender. I find it very interesting. Singaporeans love to eat chicken rice, I hope to be the first to spread the news!”

Browsing through ieatishootipost, one can see why it has dominated the other food blogs. This place is bursting with activities, like makan sessions, ieat experiments and ieat creations. This active blogger, through “spicy” activities, unceasingly seeks readers’ participation, thus winning the hearts of many readers.

The makan sessions are Leslie’s plan to get like-minded makan kakis to share good food together. “Just like the ‘durian degustation’ held earlier. Durian comes in different breeds. There are many people like myself, who don’t know the difference between Shan Mao Wang, D24, Red Prawn, Black Pearl, XO, etc… So I organized a degustation. The concept is similar to wine tasting.

… to Charity Makan Events

That durian degustation even enticed a Japanese couple to join. Each person paid $25 and within 2 hours, a specialist explained the characteristics and taste of over 10 different types of durian, following the tasting of the durians by the readers.

Leslie not only have to eat, listen and take notes, he is also busy clicking his camera, capturing the marvelous shots and then uploading it onto the blog, letting those who were unable to attend the event enjoy the post on the blog. What is surprising is that such makan session can also be turned into a charity event to contribute back to the society.

During the first year anniversary of ieat, Leslie and western restaurant called Astons organized a charity makan session. The attendees paid $100 each and filled the restaurant that night while Astons provided the meal at no charge. The readers not only enjoyed a sumptuous meal, a mini auction was also held to raise funds for Andrew and Grace Home (for Troubled Teens)

Leslie said food blogging is usually about introducing good food, but he wanted to do more. Leslie has found a meaningful way to contribute back to the society by organizing charity events through food blogging. “We can’t bring anything with us when we depart this world. What legacy can you leave behind? What kind of change can you bring to others?”

Dr. Tay yearns that his effort is able to touch someone’s life. His mind is continuously revolving around this concept: Every week, a restaurant sets aside some time and invite a group of not-so-fortunate people to enjoy a delectable meal. Hence, not only is the restaurant able to bring joy and happiness to people, it is also a way of giving back to the society.

Leslie hopes after the ieat event, others will follow suit. “Most importantly more will benefit, more will come forward and offer their humanitarian assistance and spread the happiness across.” During this interview, he is already planning the next charity makan session with Astons.

Suggesting to Hawkers to come with new dishes

Besides the makan sessions, Leslie also love to gather makan kaki to do experiments, naming it ieat experiments.

He cites the satay experiment as example. “East Coast Food Centre has many satay stalls, but which one is the best? Once, a group of makan kakis and I went there to find out. We ordered chicken satay from each stall and everyone then voted the best based on the satay and the fragrance of the satay sauce.

The inspiration of his experiments normally comes from his observations and “wacky ideas which he is thinking of”. Example whether "tariking" the teh actually made a difference to the taste of the Teh? He had his eyes blindfolded, noted the taste of both teh, with and without the “tariking” and the results were posted on the blog.

To understand the eating habits and preference of Singaporeans, Leslie added polls to collect opinions: “Last October’s poll attracted 4,000 readers to vote for the local’s popular dish & in the end, Hokkien Fried Prawn mee came up tops. There was also the most popular dessert as well as Singaporean’s favorite cuisine.”

But what Leslie is satisfied most, are the ieat creations. These are new dishes that he suggested to the hawkers.

“There is a western food stall, Cilantro, in one of the coffee shops in Bukit Merah. I found their food to be so-so. If they want to have an impact on local food and attract customers to their stall, they can’t be just another western food store selling the usual spaghetti and lamb chops. I told the owner, if they could dish up Foie Gras at just a price of $15, now, that would be interesting!”
Cilantro took his advice. When it dished out the first Foie Gras in a coffee shop, it invited Leslie back for tasting. “In the end, when the post was on the blog, Cilantro was unable to cope with the crowd over that weekend!”

Leslie’s attitude towards local cuisine is no doubt positive and enterprising. He wanted to bring the latest and the better quality great stuff to everyone.

“Like the Foie Gras, this is a challenge to the hawker. Generally speaking, hawkers are willing to try new things. If the response is good after the dish appears on the blog, then the new dish will become a regular item. Likewise, if the response is lack lustre, then the hawkers can treat it as a new attempt and publicity.”

Another ieat creation that Leslie speaks about is the Boston Lobster Fried Tang Hoon which he suggested to a cze char stall in Geylang. He said that since no cze char stall had ever include Boston Lobster in its menu, this will be the first. Also, the second version of ieat Superburger will be rolling out soon.

As if introducing his own baby, Leslie said: “This first version of ieat Superburger was introduced in September 2006. My idea is to give burger lovers that super value burger experience. So I challenged Aston. Subsequently, the team really created this Superburger! First grill the hand-chopped steak, add on the fresh and crispy lettuce, caramelized onions, bacon, etc… And price it at only $12.50! They even had the burger named after my blog, it’s named ieat Superburger.

The burger has been selling like hot cakes ever since its introduction and became a regular item on the Astons menu. Recently, Leslie has another new idea. The second version of the ieat Superburger will be introduced soon. He only revealed that it is square-shaped. As for what is in the burger, Leslie smiled and said: “Wait and see!”

A Heart Warming Story

Because Doctor Tay comes into contact with people from all walks of life, he summarizes all his experiences as “interesting”

“There was this Singaporean lady who migrated to Adelaide. She contracted cancer, and her days were numbered. I received a letter of thanks from her, saying that the food shown in the blog brought her back many pleasant memories, and reminded her of her childhood days where she would dine in different places. As I read her letter, my tears fell. I would never have known that a simple food blog like this would be able to touch a heart.”

Doctor Tay also mentions the founders of Andrew and Grace Home:” On the 1st week of this couple’s marriage, Andrew rented a room to a problem female student for her to stay in. Now, to raise funds they even lost their home. Thus the both of them and a group of problem teenage girls stayed in an old hostel. To raise funds they were willing to do almost anything like shaving their heads and running marathons. Andrew was like their father to them.

Food is one thing. Being able to keep yourself full is another. But behind the story of good food lies many extraordinary stories of ordinary people, this is even more heart-warming than food itself.

Coming back, what Doctor Tay is concerned about is not so much about his story.

In the blog there is a link, which is actually about herbal soup located in Geylang, but in a few words, he also conveyed the message of the problem of prostitution. :”They are all standing out! This social topic is of grave concern and should be noted by people. I stand here, bringing to you in a relaxed manner of what I see. The people usually see my point.”

Looking back on the growth of ieat, Doctor Tay says:”It has been a good learning experience, but what makes me happy, is that when I do take a shot of a dish which I really love frequently, and then share it with others. Food that tastes nice can never lie. It has a mysterious force, which somehow makes the pictures of it look better!”

One last thing is that, if it really tastes good, it should never be eaten alone, or you might taste a sense of loneliness and solitary.

Ten reasons why this is not your usual food blog

Here are ten things that set ieatishootipost apart from the rest:

1. The blog is responsible for introducing new and exciting dishes to the Singapore market by encouraging hawkers to experiment with new dishes and publicizing them for others to try. A lot of these dishes are now regular items on the menu! Godzilla Da Pau, ieat Superburger, Boston Lobster noodles in a Cze Char stall as well as the latest, Foie Gras in a Coffeeshop, are just a few examples. The rest can be found at the ieat's Creations label.

2. Not only is there a review on the food, but often there there are insights into the hawker's lives, Singapore's food culture as well as trends in the development of Singapore hawker food. So it predicted the explosion of stalls like Astons and Botak Jones as well has heralded the introduction of fine dining cuisine to our Singapore heartlands. There have also been lots of articles written about how hawker food is prepared, like how hawkers make XO Fish Head Bee Hoon milky.

3. It has its own forum with over 800 registered members who interact and exchange information on what to eat in Singapore. The forum is also a place where restaurateurs and foodies can interact to give feedback on their food.

4. Although we all enjoy good food, we also need to remember those less fortunate than ourselves. As such our makan kakis were responsible for raising $7616 during our Charity makan session in aid of the Andrew and Grace Home. We are planning new and creative ways of supporting the work amongst the less privileged.

5. The blog serves to provide insights into technical stuff like "how to choose a good durian" by providing a video tutorial by a Durian expert as well as documenting how to differentiate between the various breeds of durians. It also has an important role in documenting the history of Singapore food so that our future generations will know that foods like Tau Sar Piah and Bak Kut Teh originated right here in Singapore. It also explored the socio-political aspects of our hawker foods in posts like "Politically incorrect Bak Kut Teh" and "Invasion of the foreign hawkers".

6. Not satisfied with just organizing any old makan session, we continue to creatively think of new and inspiring kinds of things that our makan kakis can do, like organizing a Durian Degustation Session where Durians are enjoyed course by course. In the pipeline are a Makan Session plus Food Photography workshop as well as an overseas Makan Trip.

7. Our readers also get to learn about how our eyes work to see pictures in 3D in my special post, Food pics in 3D. This was an original idea based on principles of optics and the physiology of sight. As far as I know, this is the first time it is done to see if food pics can look tastier when viewed in 3D. Try it, it really does work!

8. The blog is about applying some fun to our Singapore food culture. So it has zany labels like "Hawker Hunks" which document hawkers who look like they belong to a catwalk. The "President's Picks" lists some of President Nathan's favourite hawker haunts and "Food Nazis" focuses on hawkers who food are so good that they can afford to be nasty to their customers and still command a great following.

9. Not only do we ask tough questions like "Does Tariking the Teh make any difference to its taste?", we actually go out there and conduct a non-randomised, totally uncontrolled trial to find out once and for all! And don't forget the time when we wanted to find out which satay stall in East Coast Lagoon served the best satay. Our group of intrepid makan kakis went out there to try every stall in order to determine the answer! In order to gain more insight into Singaporeans' food preferences, we also conducted a poll where almost 4000 readers voted for Singapore's favourite hawker dish. It turned out to be Hokkien Mee rather than Chicken Rice to everyone's surprise.

10. One of the blog's mission is to share inspirational stories of our very own heartlanders. So we wrote of ex-con, Benny and his story about how he overcame drug addiction to start his own restaurant and how he is giving back to society by training other inmates before their release. Then, there is the story about Wow Wow West owner, Eric, who hires ex-cons to work for him and spends his after hours counseling them. The latest news is that he has subsequently given his hawker stall to one of them and started another stall for himself! Such stories serve as inspiration to us all.

So there you have it, a cook's tour of ieatishootipost.

ieatishootipost on Channel U

Here's the link to the video on youtube

You can also read the online article at xin.sg

When the reporter from Channel U asked me to pick a place where we can stage the interview, Ya Kwang immediately came to mind. I chose Ya Kwang because Jason decided to introduce Cze Char dishes right after the first blog post on their Kway Chap. It was during that meeting that I discussed with Jason about the possibility of introducing a Lobster Noodle dish that was available outside of a hotel or fancy restaurant. It became the first of many unique new Cze Char dishes to be introduced our local food scene.

So after 10 months of blogging (on this and other blogs), the print media finally took notice and featured their Crab Bee Hoon on the Sunday Times last week. I thought this was a good example of how blogging is changing the way eateries are being marketed in our day and age.

Personally, I feel that restaurants have not fully realize the potential of blogs to make or break a restaurant. Of course, blogs are still very much in the infancy stage compared to the main stream media when it comes to marketing. However, as the experience in the Malaysian elections have shown, it would be a mistake to simply ignore the blogs. I think it is only a matter of time before PR agencies are hired by the restaurants to manage bloggers. This would be a whole new ballgame for the PR agencies because they will be dealing with a group of people whose nature is to fiercely defend their right to independence and free speech.

On the other hand, consider the impact that a group of 20 or 30 food bloggers reviewing the same eatery all at the same time. All we need now is a nexus whereby they can all be mobilized simultaneously. It's an uphill task trying to get a whole bunch of individualistic "cats" to behave like socialistic "dogs". There have been food bloggers' dinners organized in the past to try to bring food bloggers together, but these have only been a "blue moon" affair. The community of food bloggers in Singapore still tend to remain fragmented. Some would perhaps argue that it should remain this way. Though I believe that blogging should retain its independent flavour, I also see the marketing potential of some form of association. I am trying to plant the seed for such a nexus by creating a special segment in the forum where Singapore food bloggers can get together to discuss food blogging issues. It's a start but there is still a long way to go.

One of the emerging players in this whole equation is the blog advertising agency Nuffnang whose ads are supported in this blog. Nuffnang is emerging as the de facto association for bloggers by organizing gatherings and forums where bloggers can all congregate to discuss contemporary issues. The next logical evolution is for Nuffnang to segment its registered bloggers into the various categories and mobilize them to provide reviews of different products. I think that would be an attractive proposition to advertisers. Currently they are already doing product advertorials but on a wider, less specialized scale.

Anyway, enough of theorizing, back to the appetizing.

For this occasion, we wanted to do something that would look impressive on TV, so we went with the Boston Lobster again. Nothing spectacularly imaginative, just substituting Crab for Lobster in his already popular Crab Tang Hoon dish.

This dish combines one of my favourite carbs with my all time favourite seafood. Korean Tang Hoon is one of those magical foods that I simply fell in love with when I first tasted it in Sydney. (My hometown of Eastwood is almost like a little Korea!) And I fell in love with Lobster the first time I had it in Phuket. Not only because they are nice to eat (and very exclusive), their are probably the prettiest and most photogenic of seafoods. The bright red colour never fails to make a good picture, and the shell and tomalley (that green stuff in the head) always imparts the savoury taste of the sea to starchy staples of any kind. So it was a impressive no brainer. 4.5/5

Conclusion

I would like to apologize to the 11 Lao Shis (10 from St Andrew's and Kang Lao Shi of RJC '87-'88) who have tried their utmost to teach me mandarin. I tried my best but as you can see, I have not made further progress in the last 20 years. And if it makes you feel any better, I am still occasionally waking up in the middle of the night thinking that I am sitting for my Chinese Exams the next day. So I hope it shows that I really did try. And to the rest, please give me a break, my Chinese is not "Half past six", its a proper D7!

Thanks again to all the readers of this blog. Your comments and constant encouragement continue to fan the charcoal fire and keep the satay grilling!

Here's the translation of the Video provided by jems based on the transcript: Thanks jems!

Some bloggers like to make use of their online blogs to introduce food they love to eat. There's this particular blogger who sets out to eat all the local hawker food and blog it on his blog as a food directory for netizens.

Dr Leslie Tay loves food and also loves photography. He combined these two interests one and a half years ago, started an online food blog, going around Singapore tasting hawker food, took pictures and uploaded them onto his blog, added his critic, categorized them into various categories for easy lookup for the netizens, averaging a hit rate of 8000 a day.

Some hawkers even voluntarily requested for Dr Tay to blog about them, hoping that it will help to boost their business. Dr Tay said, " Some said it does not affect much. It's very hard to say, but for most of the unique ones, I give full marks, or rather not full marks, but 4.75, most of them will see a significant improvement in business."

There's a stall situated at Geylang which is famous for its Crab Beehoon and Lobster Noodles, after Dr Tay's introduction saw an increase in business by 50%. There are even Indonesian netizens who after reading the blog, specially flew into town to try his food. Ya Kwang Da Pai Dang's boss Jason Tan said, "When they were here, they were carrying luggage, to come and eat my Lobster Noodles, I just find it very amusing, Dr Tay's blog can evoke foreigners to come try my stuffs."

Other than introducing good food, Dr Tay also from time to time suggests to the hawkers how to improvise and create new dishes, for example this Lobster Tang Hoon. Netizens also discuss in his forum how never to waste calories on yucky food.

Quoted in Today Paper: Native American Food

Has anyone else tried native American food? I certainly haven't.

Wouldn't mind trying a Bison ribeye steak with blue corn though.

So do you all agree with me that Singaporeans are willing to give new foods a go as long as there is a common point of reference? By that I mean that when you eat Bison, you can relate to it because you think of it as another form of beef. But if you were presented with, say Widgety Grubs, you might not be able to stomach it since you would have a difficult time trying to liken it to something else.

I think that's the problem with Ang Mohs and Durians. The smell and taste of Durian is so unique that they find it difficult to have a point of reference to something they are familiar with. And when the closest thing they can think of is smelly socks, it's no wonder they don't enjoy it!

The Forum has moved!

I have transplanted the Forum to a new host!

The ieat Forum has so far been quite useful for people to discuss and recommend food places that are still not on the blog. Thanks to everyone who has taken the effort to write in their recommendations!

The new host will have added functions like a proper registration as well as the ability to insert pictures, links and so on. So I really look forward to seeing PHOTOS of food that you all have taken!. You will also be able to PM each other and even have live chats.

The Forum functions as a source of places to blog. So the more you all rave about a particular place, the more likely that it will eventually appear on the blog with credits to you of course!

Oh yes, if you notice, there is a section for "Makan Sessions" which we will be using very soon to organize our next makan session this month! So get yourselves registered and join in the fun!

My Quote in the Sunday Times: Plastic makes Goreng Pisang Fantastic

So do you all think it is possible that hawkers actually throw plastic straws and bottles into the oil to make their goreng pisang more crispy? Or is it all another hoax?

At any rate I am sure you will agree with me that eating stuff fried together with PVC is a health hazard!

The ieat Forum

I have been toying with the idea of starting a forum for quite some time now. I eventually managed to do it!

The problem is that I do not want the forum to replace the comments in the main blog. But I thought that the forum would be a great tool for readers to write in with their recommendations. Up till now, I have been getting emails about places to eat, but they are limited to my eyes only. With the forum you can suggest new places to eat so that everyone can view it.

I think the forum will also be very useful when we organize our next makan session. Yes, one is currently being planned....... so watch out for it.

The forum can also be used to discuss non-food issues as well. I see it as a way for to foster new friendships and networking amongst our readers.

So be one of the first to write in yeah?

Your Feedback on the New Layout

Been fiddling around with the new layout.

Putting the posts on the left makes sense for those who serve using the Blackberry.

Made all the colours more subdued.

So what do you think?

UPDATE 1

Thanks for all your comments.

Have done the following:

  • Added a margin to the left side
  • Increased the size of the font by 10%
Do you all still like the pics to be in the middle instead?

How about the size of the pics - should I make them bigger? Like this?

The picture of the food on the banner on top- any comments

Overall, I have changed the most of the orange colour words to grey, also added a highlight to the titles on the sidebar.

Also changed to look of Google Ads and MyBloglog to reflect the more subdued colour scheme. Essentially, to make the rest of the blog less colourful so as to minimise distraction.

Last year there was a big debate as to whether the background colour should be black or white. I still think black is more distinctive as most of the other food blogs are white, although I notice that there have been more black food blogs since last year.

Quoted in Today Weekend: Predictions for 2008

When the journalist asked me to predict the food trend for 2008, my first reaction was "Huh? How am I supposed to know?".

It's funny how so many people make me out to be an "Expert" when all I really do is go around tasting and taking pictures of all the food that I have eaten on other people's recommendations. Quite frankly, I don't really feel that I am qualified to be called an expert and it is quite amazing that I got quoted alongside some real Foodie Celebrities. I think that what I do have, is a tastebud threshold tingling level that resonates with the average Singaporean, ie I just like what the majority of Singaporeans like.

Anyway, I just came up with some ideas were on top of my mind. So what do YOU all think will take Singapore by storm in 2008?
