Foong Kee Wanton Mee: Wanton Mee Challange Part 1 of 3

$3 portion with extra Char Siew (Normal $2.50)

Wanton Mee is the quintessential street food and yet I have had so much difficulty finding one that I truly "die die must try" (ddmt). I really cannot understand why it is so difficult to make a great Wanton Mee. The way I see it, you need 1. Great Noodles 2. Great Sauce 3. Great Char Siew, 4. Great Wantons. If you look at the list of Wanton Mee Stalls that I have blogged so far, none of them have actually scored a 4.5. It would seem that Wanton Mee sellers have really been wanton about their Wanton Mees. Can't someone just dish out a truly ddmt Wanton Mee such that people will stop talking so fondly about the ones in Hong Kong?

Perhaps my problem is that I have yet to taste the best one! Fine, so I went on a Wanton Mee hunt and tasted three of the most talked about Wanton Mees in Singapore. Let's see if any of them can truly be called great.

First up is Foong Kee, who was rated #1 in a Sunday Plus article.

This stall has only been in operation for four years, but it has quickly risen to the top of the rankings. You could wait up to an hour during peak periods to get a plate of this Wanton Mee. The strength lies in the fact that they roast all their own Char Siew and they use a very good cut of pork so that the Char Siew is tender and juicy.

Their noodles are also made to specially from the factory so that they do have a quality taste and texture about it. It was better than most but I still had a niggling feeling that there must be a better one out there. The sauce was good, but just a little too bland for me. To zest it up, I asked for extra char siew sauce and chilli. Ohhh that really hit the spot! The wantons and shui gao were also very good but not outstanding. For a char siew lover like myself, this can be considered a very good plate of Wanton Mee. 4.25/5

Conclusion

The strength of this Wanton Mee lies in the quality of the Char Siew. It's certainly one of the best ones I have tasted in Singapore so far, but still a few elements short of it being legendary.

Hi ieat, I'm a fan of the noodles and char siew at Foong Kee too. One thing I can't understand is the queue at Kok Kee Wanton Mee at Lavender.

hi ieat,
since you are on a wanton mee 'adventure', you might want to check out Hwa Kee Barbeque Noodles at East Coast Food Centre as well as the noodles at Alex Eating House along Beach Road. We wrote about these places in our blog and you might want to read about them before going over to these places to check out the noodles.....

i mentioned this store some time back, the char siew is like the best in singapore, roast duck is fantastic as well. The chef has a bit of that "soup nazi" in him...dont antagonise him when he is busy.

The char siew and siew yoke here is damn solid. The roast duck I thought so so. The char siew has just the right amount of sweetness and charring - yum! We usually order double the normal amount of char siew. Only problem is the looooong wait especially when there are many people tar pau-ing. The chef has a slight problem with delegation of work - he seems to want to do everything himself, down to collecting money!

You need to try Ah Seng's wonton mee at Dunman Food Centre!

i just went to try this place last friday.
i gotta say their char siew is shiokalicious... carcinogenically charred, sticky caramelised burnt bits from the fat and sugars which coats this char siew. One of the better char siews in singapore..

but roast pork and roast duck nothing to rave about.

i reiterate that you try Chan's roast at Alexandra Village HC. Good fight with many of the stalls you have recommended here...

this is the BEST char siew i have met so far. but eat it by itself, not with the wanton mee cos the real flavours of char siew get diluted. this char siew still loses a wee bit to another stall i remember when i was much younger. that stall used to occupy what is now hotel 81 chinatown, opp chinatown point. that char siew had more caramelization, fragrance, tenderness & charred bits. anyone knows or remembers?

I used to be working some where near Foong Kee. One of my colleagues & I have an indescribable affection for its char siew & duck meat. The only regret is we always found tiny little smashed bones in the meat. Perhaps the bones could be handled with more concern.

Tips for lunch crowds. Do leave ur office early if u do not want to stand there waiting for the rest to leave with ur saliva drooling!

Another gd recommendation for HK Roasted Meat for frens staying/working in the West -
Tian1 Lai2 Shao1 La4 @ Taman Jurong Market Lvl2 (Go up by the escalator, turn left & walk straight in. I Shan't describe further where's the exact location, u'll probably see the queue everyday.)

YUMMY~~!

Drool... Another tip to beat lunch crowds - call the boss at 9695-3632 to preorder. Then just pick up and disappear somewhere to makan.
