Nam San Mackeral Otah: Don't overlook the White Fish otah!
Every now and then you get that craving for something savoury and satisfying but you aren't necessarily hungry. It's the kind of hole in your foodie soul that are best filled by foods such as Sausages, Satay, Bak Kuah, Cheeses, Yakitori and Potato Croquettes. Another really great snack to satisfy that umami crave has to be our very own Otah!
Whilest the more common form of Otah are the ones served in coconut leaves, you are more likely to find stalls selling the banana leaf version when you are in the Joo Chiat or Katong area. That's because the Peranakans are widely accepted to be the originator of this version. Nothing beats a freshly grilled otah. The smell of the chilli fish paste and the burnt banana leaf is probably one of the most alluring smells you can ever come across in Singapore! If you don't believe me, just close your eyes and imagine yourself walking along a row of shophouses on a chilly night. Now imagine the smell of the otah wafting through the air.......... (Good news if you are reading this in the middle of the night, they opened from 11pm all the way to 7pm the next day!)
Though I have always liked the usual Mackeral Otah here, on this occasion, I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered their White Fish (non-spicy) Mackeral Otah. I have never liked non-spicy otahs because up till now because they all tasted like ordinary fish cake to me. But THIS one is very very different. It's spicy and savoury without the heat and the texture is soft and smooth. It has that quality about it that you just have to down five pieces before you can start thinking about stopping. 4.5/5
Conclusion
I have never tasted non-spicy otah this good before! Hey I think I almost prefer it over the normal spicy one! Really must try lah!

hmmm.. i like white fish otah! *yum yum* =p
i am vegetarian.
since it open thru e night, tis will be a fantastic place for me to go when i'm craving for something to eat!! heehee
Lovely! It's kinda difficult to find white fish otah....thxs!
But still no idea where the place is...near any prominent site?
ieat i think you forgot to mention that their otah is also halal as well. Very good and tasty otah indeed.
Was having a BBQ with friends who just p.o.p-ed from Tekong - on Tuesday night. And we ordered Nam San's.
You have no idea how much otahs we ate that night. By the BUNCH - we grabbed and SLURPED.
Then, shiok. Now, SICK. The after-effects LOL
What to do? Army boys mah. =D
Sad to say Singapore Otak is no more great. Yes Muar is better but there are many copy cats. The best is Otak from Tanjong Pinang, Indonesia.
juz came back from nam san abt an hr ago but have to say i'm quite disappointed in e white fish otah.. although i appreciate e fact tat e otahs r grilled on e spot, but e end product still look so raw after 10 mins (i.e. u dun see any "chao ta" portion of e otah at all) i lost my appetite after having 2 of it.. =(
n e worst part is, e guy there, (only him there n he dun look like a local malay) is so dishonest!!
i ordered 10 pieces of otah to try out.. after waiting for 10 mins, he packed my otah, n charged me e price for 10 pieces. i left after passing him e money as my boyfriend parked his car just outside e shop (e road is very narrow, so can't park very long in case obstruct e traffic).. when i reached home, i opened e bag n counted tat there's only 9 otahs in there!! =(
it's not exactly e price but it's e action of e worker who puts me off!! i was in a hurry, thus didn't count my orders there, but he can't "tao zhia" like tat, right? >(
nonetheless, i hope e "raw looking" otahs r a one-off thing so i'm giving e otah another chance - will "peng gang" e rest of e otahs myself to make them more "chao ta" n "pang" n try e taste again..
p.s.: in future when u guys go there at night, pls check ur orders properly in case e same thing happened to u too!
hey, apologies, but what's the price like? bbq coming up.
e normal chilli otah is $0.90 while most of e rest r usually $1 (frankly speaking, if e standard was like last night, i really wun fork out $1 for such quality!). those r prawn, squid, fish head, white fish otahs.. there's crayfish (seasonal) selling at $3/pc n something else selling at $3/pc but can't recall wat's tat.. big prawn otah is $2 if i dun remember wrongly.. they sell nasi lemak at $4 each as well..
if u wanna order for bbq uncooked one, it's less $0.05 for each piece... i would say it's really expensive.. =(
I've tried the otah from Muar but somehow I find no oomph because it desn't have that spicy lemon grass taste. It was just chilli hot. Er...hope you get what I mean.
I prefer the local version here. I like the otah from Lee Wee Brothers. They are located at Realty Park at Hougang. They have a nasi lemak + otah stall at the Hougang St 21 hawker centre as well as at B1 Tampines Mall. The white version is also available. Not too bad.
the otah is to salty..and the white version is not the genuine old style one
haiz.. went for my otah craving again few weeks back n was darn disappointed..
they dun sell the white fish otah at night anymore... =(
so i bought e chilli one.. n goodness.. their msg or salt must be very cheap!!! all e chilli ones i got were sooooo salty!!
i doubt i'll ever go back there again..
Hi,
Recently, I was shopping at Bugis Junction and saw a new otah stall called Otah Inc. I am always a fan of otah and decided to give a try.
I realized that Otah Inc is first in Singapore to serve new local flavors of Otah....they have laksa otah and tom yum otah.
The most amazing thing about them is they have otah taquitos. I tried and love it. They wrap otah with a kind of bread and have different kind of ingredient inside. It is so convenience to eat otah.
Try it and you will be surprise.
