Sin Hoe Hin KL Wanton Mee: Wanton Mee Challenge Part 3 of 3
With the ieatfamily
$5 portion with extra ingredients
If I asked you where you can find the best Wanton Mee, Little India would probably be the last place you would think about. But hidden amongst the maze of spice shops, restaurants and colourful textile shops is a rather old and run down coffeeshop that serves a mean Wanton Mee.
This is one Wanton Mee that is anything but simple. Every plate is chock full of roasted char siew, fried sui gao, fried wanton, boiled sui gao, boiled wanton, lard bits and watercress. Yes, you heard right, they use Xi Yang Chai (Watercress) instead of the usual Chye Sim and I really enjoyed it! The sight of the black sauce with all the ingredients bathing in it looked so good, I really had to struggle to take the pictures while everyone else were busily tucking into the noodles.
In case you are wondering, the sauce is made up of a special stock, Lee Kum Kee Oyster sauce and this special Thick Black Sauce (pic right) that is only available in Malaysia. Phwa Malaysia really Boleh!
The noodles are specially ordered from a Hong Kong Noodle maker and were excellent although I still felt that Fei Fei's were better. The charsiew is also procured from a "famous" but secret charsiew stall and was also very good. The most enjoyable bit for me was the freshly fried Sui Gao. The Sui Gao is made from pork, prawns, wood ear fungus and water chestnuts and were substantial and juicy. Soak it momentarily in the rich dark sauce and eat with a mouthful of noodles and the familiar Berlinda Carlisle song would start ringing in your ears: "OOooooh heaven is a place on earth!" $3 4.6/5
What is very interesting is that the Lao Ban Niang is Taiwanese! Now, how come it takes a Taiwanese to teach Singaporean how to make Malaysian Wanton Mee? She took over the stall from a Malaysian lady 8 years ago and learnt the ropes from her.
Conclusion
Almost there. I have finally found a Wanton Mee that I can rave about. If you asked me, the perfect bowl of Wanton Mee would have the noodles and wantons from Fei Fei, the sauce and fried sui gao and watercress from this stall and the char siew from Foong Kee. At this moment though, this would be the one Wanton Mee I would bring Anthony Bourdain to if he wants to try Wanton Mee in Singapore. (In your dreams ieat...in your dreams!)
Update: 4 June 2008

It wasn't Debbie Gibson, it was Berlinda Carlile who screamed that heaven is a place on earth. Anyway, your great blog has another crazy fan in me. In addition, agreeing with you, Fei Fei really serves great noodles and wanton. Ooh, did you forget about the soup? Full of the the simple ernest taste of ikan bilis. Cheers.
Oops! Thanks for that correction! Yes the soup at Fei Fei is very good.
Hmmm.... I think it was Belinda Carlisle that sang that song....
"Ooo baby do you what that's worth.... Oooo heaven is a place on earth"
Hmmm.... brings back lots of memories of school days.... sigh... I'm getting old.
Anyway, Rockwell Rd is really near my church. Looks like I know where I'll be going for b'fast after service this weekend!
the noodles look every meepok-ish in the 2nd pic. is it different texture compare to others?
i just dunno why i prefer the east coast lagoon stall to the lavendar & old airport road ones which many prefer. i have not tried fei fei yet except their branch at toa payoh which is so-so..
U must be pretty sick of trying more wanton mee..but still I insist again on dropping you a note. ;) --> Go Dunman Food Centre (Joo Chiat) and try the wanton mee!!! The stall among the teochew dishes/malay/fruit drink stallS. Opens around 5pm till 1-2am ... .. =)
Summerpeach, yes they have 2 types of noodles. I think the mee kia texture is still better for wanton mee.
mee kia is an all time favorite of mine!! =)
good mee kia has got tis QQ n "crunchy" feel to it.
seems tat i haven't like mee pok no matter how many times i tried it.. people order mee pok tar, for me, it's always mee kia tar!!
but dunno whether i got a chance to taste tis wanton mee or not cos it's only open til 1.30pm! i'm never a morning person! i'll make an effort to go try it though!! =p
ya lor, 1.30pm only.. business must be real good.
i also think i got no chance of eating this. those that close at 3plus i already have some problem reaching on time.
ieat: no wonder i was thinking why 2nd pic look so mee pok-ish & 1st pic look so mee kia-ish? so they serve 2 types ic. i have never eaten wanton meepok before though i love my meepok. hmm i think i will still leave my meepok for my bak chor mee or fishball mee :P
I agree with freakkler!
Try Eng's at Dunman Food Centre! His (specially-made) noodles are very Q, and his chilli is hellish (if you are into masochistic behaviour)!
I made an effort on Saturday to try this staff. I managed to reached there at 1pm and after serving my order, the lao ban niang close stall (play majong I think).
The noodles are very Q but somehow I didn't like this dark sauce version. Perhaps its because I prefer the local version.
Hiya,
Just made a trip to try the sin hoe wantan mee today.
The taste is not too bad but certainly something i will not return for.
My all time favorate is the wantan mee at sims drive kopi tiam. Try the $3 platter.
Regards
Would be good if you can supply more details like what time open, contact number and actual address of the store.
The kopi tiam is just next to the neighbourhood police station along sims drive. Sorry i do not have the exact block number. There is only 1 kopi tiam there next to the station. Opens 7am till 3 i think. think its closed on sundays. Open every weekday.
sorry for side track. what happen to the chicken rice stall in the same coffee shop? The white hair lady who speak good english.
Just had that wanton mee at the kopitiam next to the Police Post Blk 53?. Poor me order $2.50, the mee kia is ordinary but very generous with lots of char siew, veggies and I counted 1 wanton in the soup and 3 fried wantons, that is value for money. This is also be the first time I am praising their veggies, fresh and crunchy. My rating 4.25/5.If they get better noddle and black sauce then can be 4.5/5
Incidentally, the wanton mee, #01-36, at Clementi Food Centre is like Pontian's 8383 wanton mee.
Did you know why the Lee Kum Kee sauce is not available in Singapore? because it is banned due to carcinogenic content.
Had lunch at this wanton mee stall. Ordered chilli dry and very disappointed.I think they used chilli powder from some neighbouring Indian chilli powder stalls.Mee and char siew ok. Will not border to go there again.
Have you tried the wanton mee at Tanjong Rhu? The stall next to the one which sells the famous small baos. Its at Blk 10, Tanjong Rhu/Mountbatten Estate. Its value for money at $2, and the kopi there is served in retro cups with saucers. Do visit there someday.
I have given Fei Fei wanton mee at joo chiat a new name - mei wei tao de mian (tastless mee)
~meowsanz~
nothing great and it's no where near the kl-styled wan tan mee like the infamous koon kee in petaling st. like some who posted comments earlier, wont be something that i will return for.
oh no..! I just went there today and found that the whole coffeshop is closed! Help, anyoneknows where they relocated??
I went there on sunday and indeed the place is undergoing renovation. spoke to the owner of the shop opposite who claimed they sold the place and gone into retirement, which i find hard to believe. anyway, can't find anything else online as well. another case for gurmit singh and michelle chia???
Today, I found a nice Wanton Mee - KL Style - the sauce is made up of a special stock, Lee Kum Kee Oyster sauce and this special Thick Black Sauce.
Geylang East Ave 3. #01-109 (HDB Industry - Blk) Cheng Koay Eating House.
The stall name is 公鸡碗- 云吞面
Worth to try.. I give 4/5 rating ( taste close to "12 Rowell Road", which the stall close down few months back)
