Hai Nan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles: Damien's Favourite Beef Noodles!

Beef Kway Teow Dry $4
According to Damien, this stall sells the BEST beef kway teow in Singapore. Better than all the rest. So we had to make our pilgrimage down to Toa Payoh to try it. The stall is supposed to be opened till 7pm, so we thought that 2.30pm should be quite a safe time to visit. Lo and Behold, there was a queue of some 20 something people lining up for the Beef Kway Teow! It so happens that the day we went there was exactly the day after Channel 8 featured the stall. So by the time we got to the front of the queue, they were already sold out on the gravy for the dry version!
I wasn't going to give up so easily, so I made a return visit the following week just to try the dry Beef Kway Teow. This time I got what I wanted. Or did I?
I was undoubtedly impressed with the stewed beef tendons which were so soft it explodes in your mouth, coating your buccal cavity with its soft and gooey goodness. The beef slices were tender but the beef balls were outsourced, so they were not that special. The sauce itself was good, but maybe my expectations were too high, it did not have that oomph if you ask me. However, one lady who was a regular at the stall confirmed that the gravy that day tasted a bit watered down. I suspect that it could be due to the higher volume sold during the past week. But for now it rates a 4.25/5. Damien and other regulars of this stall might beg to differ.
The beef soup on the other hand was wonderfully robust and sweet and definitely one of the best I have tasted. 4.5/5
This Hainanese man has been selling Hainanese Style Beef Kway Teow for over 40 years. He is still remembered as the Beef Kway Teow stall from Cuppage Centre. When I asked where he learned his recipe from, he simply said that he derived it through experimentation.
Conclusion
Another Beef Kway Teow to add onto the Top Beef Kway Teow list! Definitely one of the better ones around which I am sure many fans will write in to support.

This stall was one of about three Beef Noodles stalls at the old Cuppage FC and it was the most popular, exceeding the popularity of the supposedly "Lost & Found" Hong Kee Beef Kway Teow at Amoy Street FC.
After Cuppage FC was torn down to make way for the extension of Centrepoint, I hunted high and low for the two uncles who ran Hai Nan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles.
Found them at their present location after a tip-off from a makan buddy and since then, I've got to have my $5 fix every two weeks.
This is one bowl of goodness that the ingredients are still aplenty after the noodles are long gone and please remember, order the dry version as it's the dope for a Sunday Kind of Love.
oh man... this s my favourite beef noodle stall... you have done it again!
i am so tempted to have a food blog when i realised all those stalls i went were featured in your blog. ha
if i am not mistaken, there's a very good fish porridge stall as well (by teochew couple)
the fried oyster is also pretty good
Dear Damien,You have not taste the 1 at Changi V yet. The dry one here dont have much beef bits. The soup have very good stock but they added too much sugar.I will give a 4/5. Anyway this is Hainan while the Changi V is Teochew.
For those who like the fried oyster Uncle starts around 3pm.
Dear AMD, pls adv where is the fish porridge stall? are u talking abt the fish soup stall at the corner next to the old man selling chwee kuay.
Personally I feel the Changi Village one better is than this stall.
BTW, anyone knows what happened to the laksa stall at the old FC? Seems to be gone after renovations.
The food here sounds interesting. Certainly like to try it someday. Anyway, never heard anything about Ya Kwang Da Pai Dong recently.. Really anxious to find out what specialty dishes the owner has to provide. Can try to feature it soon?
You want to find out? Very easy just give him a call, the number is on the blog. And then let us know how the meal was!

just managed to find out ..

Hi, all hainan beef noodle lovers should try this stall, you definitely won't waste your trip there. Their Laksa is also superb. But prepared for long queues.
much welcome! SMART
hopefully our taste bud similar :)
AMD, Went n ordered 1 fish soup n 1 fish porridge (muay). Ok the soup is cheng n fish is fresh. But still lack some punch of fish. They opens around 5pm n closed around 9.30pm. Anyway I did enjoyed the fish soup as I had Ah Chuan Or Luak n followed up with cold cheng tng. Fish soup 4/5, Or luak 4.25/5 n 4.5/5 for the cheng tng.My rating.
Do try the Empress Place beef kway teow which is located at the coffeeshop next to Siglap NTUC fairprice...The soup is rather robust and tasty; going to try the dry version soon!
Joyce, They are related to the Hock Lam Beef Noddle. The guy manning the stall told me he is the nephew n he follow the traditional style which his grandfather cook.
I think the one at siglap is super overpriced and the dry version no kick.
If i were to choose between Siglap and Purvis, I'd gladly take the latter.
Funny how it is that only the soup versions taste good.
Hi Uncle Smart,
Tried the Changi Village one and it's very good too, albeit different style.
Rong Xin Beef Noodle at AMK used to very good - but that was 10 years ago. Nowadays, the standard is inconsistent.
His laksa is good though...
tried it last week. good depth to the sauce but a bit too starchy for me.
soup was good but too sweet as some others said. Still, a very very good beef noodle.
Tried the Changi Village one last week, very good. Worth my trip all the way there.
I prefer the teochew over the hainanese one.
Visited Lor 7 today!
Wah the beef soup is the best so far I've tasted in SG, surpassing even Changi Village. My gf is crazily in love with it!
The dry version the gravy quite starchy. Chilli so-so~
Better get an apprenticeship with the uncle then Holy Drummer! :), the best present for your gf... :)
Holy Drummer,Unable to contact n thus was disappointed not to find the Lor 7 Beef stall at Geylang. So where is this Lor 7?
Uncle Smart - Sorry for confusion, was not referring to Geylang. I meant Lor 7 Toa Payoh i.e. the stall of this post.
Paiseh =)
Hmmm...ate it after your team highly recommended it and damien's fav, since i was just working nearby, might as well...sadly disappointed..the soup, besides the sweetness from rock sugar, i cant really taste the beefy broth from the soup though, the potion is quite little too......damien sure has an unique taste..haa
Dear DISAPPOINTED, Yes I agree the soup too sweet. Can you advise us where we can have great beef soup.
Hi Smart,
Personal opinions and preferences, 3 places..1st will be the original hock lam beef @ fareast sq, 2nd will be lagoon but recently uncle decided to shrink his portion abit so i have to order $5 to satisfy my craving but hey, i dont blame him as all costs are rising and 3rd will be at beach rd, below the army mkt.
Anyone can recommend good tendon beef balls? I tried some in Bangkok and the taste still lingers in my mouth....ggeeeesshhh...the thought of it makes me drool again...
Tendon beef balls.. go to Syed Alwi Rd. I ate there last week but with a full stomach so cant really say it is that good. Maybe you try n let me know, Beware the chilli very hot.
Most customers usually order the dry version as it's the speciality of this stall.
Still my personal favourite as I have yet to try the Changi Village's one.
Bought a couple of my buddies there last weekend and even the big eaters had problem finishing the $5 portion.
A good mix is the tripe, tendon and "shen rou" with chor bee hoon. His beef balls lacks the punch as is purchased from a manufacturer.
Went there today and had the dry version.
It was good and for $4, there was really quite a lot of ingredients. They also gave me a small bowl of soup and it was good too.
Only the chilli is not nice.
finally tried this today. I ordered a $5 version cuz I added tendon but omitted beef balls as I do not like beef balls. Since it's the dry version which I have ordered, I have asked the uncle for a big bowl of soup :) he always gladly gave me more salted veggie. Very polite and excellent service~
Now for the food. The portion was huge, lotsa lotsa ingredients~! There were ingredients in every mouthful of horfun I had. Both sauce and soup was full of flavour. I only wish it was a tad less sweet.
Overall a very good bowl of beef noodles and would be perfect if they can just cut down on the sugar.
