La Pizzaiola: Authentic Italian Pizza at HDB prices!
With iwatch_ueat and Damien
Quattro Formaggio $13.90 for a 12 inch pizza
Don't you think it is a little redundant to label a pizza as "Italian" pizza? Of course, pizza is Italian what, ah boh then?
But the fact is that the pizza has evolved into something quite different from its original form such that there is a big difference between "Italian" pizza and American style "Pizza Hut" pizzas. For me, when someone says "Italian" pizza, I think about a thin crust pizza that is baked in a wood fired oven with a good tomato sauce and lots of chewy mozzarella cheese.
Although I love pizza, I have been on a pizza lull for a while. So this is my very first pizza post. Damien alerted me to this "Authentic Italian Pizza at HDB prices" pizza which I thought was very interesting. And what can be more authentic then having a real Italian Chef making the pizzas? Ah, yet another "Ang Moh in the HDB heartlands" story!
Rucola Parma $18.90 for 12 inch
Loris and Jennifer met Singapore, got married and ran off to open a restaurant in Tuscany before returning to Singapore again. During her stay in Italy, Jennifer fell in love with the Italian pizza so when they returned to Singapore, she had this irresistible urge to share her passion for real Italian pizza with the Singaporean Heartlanders.
They use the thin and crispy pizza base here, but it is not so thin like it's a "water cracker". You still get a 1 cm thick layer of bread in the middle, but it is thin and crispy around the rim which I am told is how they do it in Naples. I found the tomato based sauce a little on the tangy side but both my makankakis said they like it that way. The cheese could have been more chewy, but at $13.90 for a whole pizza, I guess I should not complain too much.
We liked the Quattro Formaggi which is made up of parmesan, blue, mozzarella and emmental cheeses. 4.25/5
The Rucola Parma was nice and having the salad on top of the pizza is very refreshing as you get the contrast between the crisp leaves with the heavier pizza base. 4/5
For those who enjoy Garfield's favourite food, the lasagna here is pretty commendable. It's also probably the cheapest Lasagna you can get anywhere. For $6 you get a good portion of Lasagna which is made with fresh sheets of pasta. Jennifer has modified the lasagna a little to suit the local taste, so the tangy edge has been blunted with the addition of a bit of sugar. Suits me fine. 4/5
Conclusion
Where can you get your Italian style pizza fix, real cheap and on the go? Well, now you know.

Isn't arugula just the Italian/American way of saying rocket?
Thanks for pointing that out. My mistake.
Whoa, looks like a great place! I bet Adam over at Slice would be impressed...
I used to run Rialto and Teo Pau Lin featured us as cheap and good. Crispy thin pizzas and authentic pastas at vey affordable prices.
A pity you were not shooting then, doc.
Now I only cook to entertain my friends and clients at home. :-)
Wah, good looking people and pizzas! You are right to point out the diff between Italian and American pizza though. I'd go for Italian anytime!
Rialto used to be at Killiney above this kopi-tiam right?
Had dinner once there however, when I went back a few months back, you guys disappeared.
The Oriental Express - Any chance of re-opening another outlet?
Pizza Wow..This is looking awesome, I love hot and spicy pizzas of my favorite stores Papajohns.com, PizzaHut and Dominos at CouponAlbum..
Papajohns was a bi-weekly treat for me while a student on a budget in LA.
Loved the green jalapenos that accompanied the hot & spicy pizza :)

FYI, pizza originated from china.
Marco Polo brought a new kind of flat bread back from China in the 1300s which we now know as "Pizza".
Nowadays, the Chinese pizza is usually in the form of scallion pancakes.

Tried the pizza with rocket and parma ham and thought it tasted ok. Rocket has a pretty strong flavor on it's own and that really masked the taste of the parma ham. Wonder if they are using italian or spanish parma ham.
at these prices? can't be spanish jamon...
After reading your blog, i made a special trip down to LaPizzaiola and boy was i was very dissapointed.Lasagna sauce was watery and very oily!(and not in the fragrant olive oil way).not much taste too.Pizza (by slice) was a 2.5 MAX. Even the affordable price can't justify eating it. Total waste of $. 4/5? i'm getting very sceptical of your ranking system. Seems that you are giving better reviews cos the nice owners you chatted with will be reading the article(and i don't know, did they treat you to the meal too?) Cos i have tried other places you recommend and it always sounds like u are helping to 'advertise' for them. Cos most of the food is so-so. Since the Geylang Beef Kway Teow (that rocks!)is a 4.5/5, how on earth could this be a 4/5?
My partner "ta-powed" home the parma ham with arugula and the four cheese last night and it tasted pretty good still, albeit i noticed the pizza size has shrunk recently. It was much much bigger in December.
Never tried the lasagne though.
Went there recently about 2 weeks ago.
On first impression, the place looks cosy being on its own away from the bustle of the coffeeshop nearby with its couple of tables outdoor and candlelit atmosphere.
Ordered a beef lasagna, a slice of beef pizza covered with cheese, a pastry with ham filling and an apple pie.
I was somewhat disappointed with the overall experience. The pastry (can't remember which one it was) was terrible, the crust thick dry and hard.
The pizza slice was pretty okay, not too dry and definitely value for money. The lasagna was also value for money and decent but tasted way too similar to the pizza and was quite oily. But at least it was hot, unlike all the other items.
Finally had an apple pie to finish off the dinner. Note: Their pastries all come in a standard shape and size and thus the apple pie was also too hard, dry and crust so thick i could probably count the few dry cubes of apple filling. Okay, exaggeration. But only a little.
I hope they are taking note of the feedback.
To be fair, the pizza I had that day was a whole pizza that was made on the spot and not the already prepared ones on display. The freshness of the pizza can make a big difference I think.
looks good. I love italian pizza especially you are on carbohydrate restrictions. the other die-hard fan must-try is the pizza at Amalfi at Clarke quay, near the bungy jump bar. its so thin and so far i've only conquered the mushrooms and plain margerita version. the 3 or 4 cheese are fantastic too. yum!

oh owned by the same folks? Still didn't try this place yet but am heading to Pietrasanta this Friday!
The pizza on my post on the Canon Powershot A590IS is from Pietrasanta. Very nice. I love the ambience of the place. When you go make sure you say hi to Jennifer and Loris!
Where have they gone. Their shop is closed, signboard removed. I think their pizza is good.
New address anyone know?
