Mei Xiang Fish Soup: Unusually Un-Cheng Fish Soup
With iwatch_ueat and SCS Butter
What do you look for in a Fish Soup? Some people go for Fish Soup that is very "Cheng" (clear). If you are the "Cheng" type, then you will be very disappointed with this soup. But if you are like me who like a bit of ooomph in the soup, then you would like this one.
The soup here is full of "bits" inside, bit cloudy but really tasty. Not sure if this is due to MSG or not, but it sure hits the spot. We ordered the "Black and White" which costs $6 for a big bowl. You get nice, thickly sliced fish and fried battered fish which is quite yummy (bit on the salty side). 4.5/5
This stall is a bit of a Food Nazi. They don't allow you to take away so if you really want to take it home, you'll have to bring your own box! Also note the weird opening times! However, when I spoke to the owner in the afternoon he seemed quite nice and did not quite appear like a Food Nazi. Maybe you have to get him when he is really busy!
Conclusion
Very shiok fish soup but not for those who like their fish soup to be "Cheng".

for ur information luhhs.
the berseh ish spelt tis way luhhs. euu spelt it as bersih. juz to let euu noe luhhs. and i have tried their fish soup before and it ish not tat nice luhhs. juz tu say wat i tink about them. but i will have to agree wif euu on one thing luhhs. the food ish rather expensive and the boss ish rather rude.
Of all the fish soups I have tasted, this stall's version must be the MSG champ. It's tasty no doubt, but there are better stalls out there with less MSG in their soup.
its real good! possibly the best fish soup i had here... pity its opening hours are so short! but thats cos of its popularity! used to be cheap.. i'd been eating it before the hawker center got renovated and stuff like that.. those were the days of good cheap food mann.. msg? i dun think its so heavy laden with msg though..
what interesting opening hours though!
biome, I had to disagree totally with you. As I am partial to MSG, I almost choked on the MSG laden soup. I had the black and white too. The fish slices were thick but obviously not fresh esp the "black", the boss masked it with plenty of sodium.(ieat said bit salty ;). My throat was real uncomfortable so I dashed over to Sungei Rd Laksa across the vacant land and down a bowl of the fiery soup to take away the discomfort. Yi du gong du. Sorry ieat, I would not be so generous with the score. 2.5?
My fave fish soup is a stall at Blk 511, Bedok North Ave 2/ST 3. But it always sold out by 12.30pm. Another one is at Zion Rd Food Centre. This one is next to the fish ball noodle stall but is closed on Sat.
My favourite "Black/White" or Hei Bai fish soup is at Seah Im FC.
It's at the opposite end of the muslim stalls, facing the bus interchange. Cannot miss the stall as the queue snakes around the corner during peak hours.
Sounds good but cannot tarpao without a box! I wonder if they would oblige if I give a plastic bag?
Why don't you try and tell us what happens?
The last time i ate at Mei Xiang, they charged me for extra chilli :(
Anybody encountered this before?
I give a 3.5/5 for the Black n white fish soup. There are better food at Berseh FC.
yep. extra chilli or vege muz pay. last time is 3 bucks but now 4 and i think the portion of fish is definitely more generous now so its still worth it. one of my fave fish soup stores. they got this chinese cabbage which is really sweet n crunchy.
you are the best! those stalls which i find it nice are always reported by you... dont reveal too many of these places to make the place even more popular... i hate to queue... ha
and i believe people have different taste. maybe this blog doesnt suit the taste bud of yours, but it certainly suits mine.
The stall used to have ta pao services, used to have more varieties even with chicken parts in their mixed fish soup.
To me the chilli used previously was much better than current ones and best of all, they were given free.
Guess the owner had to re-invent & add policies to cope with the long queue la.
Its one of those 'you cant go wrong with the food' stall lor.
There was a fish soup in Marina South food court many years back named 'Blanco Court' (not the China Square one) Anyone know where they moved to?
i agree with 'smart'. there is better food at jalan berseh. since you are a teochew, i dunno if you have tried the teochew delicacies from lao liang pig trotter's and shark's meat stall on level 2.
SCS Butter, in response to your query on the Blanco court fish soup, i think i saw a stall carrying that name at the Raffles Hospital food court run by Banquet. Aniwaz, i think Raffles Hospital is where the demolished Blanco Court used to reside.
*lol* the comments on them being Food Nazi's quite hilarious! My dad also kena-they didn't let him ta-pau even though he brought a box!
My fren has another term for Food Nazi hawkers: "Very Action". Well what happened was I asked for extra fried eggs at Mei Xiang and my fren found them to be "Very Action" cos they refused to sell me haha. oh well...
SCS Butter: I duno whether is it the same chilli that we're talkin about but last time i went, the chilli wasn't so oily looking. But oily or not I still think the chilli is really nice! And not to mention, unusual!

Hi sbimbycat,
You know, when you write in the comments there is an option at the bottom where you get to choose your identity. Click on "other" and type your pen name. In that way you will not appear as anonymous. People pay more attention to what our regulars say then to people they are not familiar with.
yg, yes I tried that stall many times but I recommend you to the 1 at a coffee shop near Cambridge (sori I cant find the address).
msg-laden or not, this stall serves the best fish soup around (i guess i prefer my fish soup to be 'un-cheng'). i lurrve the generous amounts of chinese cabbage in the soup and the chilli dip is shiok.
it's true that additional chilli is available at an extra charge, but i can see why. if not for the extra charge, my fish-soup-kakis, who are 'chilli queens', would have grabbed double/triple amounts of chilli, with large amounts going to waste at the end of the meal, i'm sure.
as for the 'no take-away' rule, i heard that not only you need to bring your own container, you even have to pour the fish soup into the container yourself -- not sure if this is true or not.
but as far as i can see, this stall has a well-established production line to preparing the food. how they take your orders, relay the order to the kitchen, prepare the food and serve the food -- it's almost mechanical. your orders are identified by the colours of the bowls (either black or white). allowing different containers would probably affect the understanding of the orders and efficiency of the food preparation.
oh so that's wat the 'other' button is for! okie tks!
yes! my dad had to resort to 'taking things into his own hands' by pouring the soup into the container himself after they told him they dun do tapaus even tho he brot the plastic container. but i must say it was worth all the trouble cos it's yummy!!
and they are able to serve so quickly precisely because they operate 'mechanically', like a production line. i noticed that even tho I was no. 10 in the queue, I didn't wait long at all!
Tried the fish soup at Mei Xiang once and was hooked to it. Its unfortunate that they oni operate during the weekdays n close at 3pm, which means i will hv to apply for leave in order to savour their tasty chilli and fried fishes. 4 bucks for a bowl of fishy is quite reasonable given our current living standard..i also wun mind payin for the chilli since its darn good.
i have tried their food and lyk many other of their regular customers, i was hooked to it. but unfortunately their store oni opens on weekdays and their food are usually sold out by 3+ in the afternoon. why dun they sell inthe evening? i tink they will get more customers, cuz by 6+ lyk tat, most ppl wld have finished work and they can go and enjoy a tasty meal...

Well..the reason they charge 30 cents for each chilli(thereafter)is because they want to limit the customer from takin more...cos some of the customer wld try to take as much as they can (eventually they din finish it)..and dirty the whole place..beside the stall is quite small..imagine all the customer crowd around the chilli container..it would slow down the speed of them servin their customers..and they dun do take-away is becos it is time-consuming and some customer have the tendency to change their order at the very last min...it would discrupt the order and therefore slow down the whole process..well..i believe everyone has their own reason for doing something..maybe we should show some empathy?Obviously from what we can see is that the owner is tryin to speed up their servng time so that customers do not have to wait too long..and they can serve more customer...which is why productivity is their piority..as for service wise..we shld try to understand that there's a diff between hawker and resturant..u pay few hundreds bucks for a meal u definitely get a superb service..as for food nazi?its a matter of perception..maybe u will understand if u try to work as a hawker..
my colleague brought us there and told us White One taste better, so we each ordered one.
the white soup is clearer I think than the one you took. :-)
One of my fav fish soup stall.Their opening hrs is from 11.30a.m not 10.12a.m.They won't do takeaway even if bring a container, have to buy from them pour yourself.Extra chilli and veg must pay extra,it's written there.
to anonymous:
i am referring to the post you have posted quite some time ago.
how come you know so much about them and the reason behind the cost for the extra ingredients? did they tell you or did you figured it out yourself? tink about it. how come you managed to thought of such an explaination tat actually is almost like you are defending them and and actually speaking for them.
ladies and gentlemen,
the stall has been around for decade..haha since 1986..why i know it..interesting..? well there are days where they started off with no queue ..low sales..but it through the boss perservance, hard work and lots of creative juice to establish what it is today..so give it some credit.. however the boss has it own methodology abt how the production line shd be and e best way to serve e food. Everything he design have a reason either for safety or efficiency. That is his top priority.
And there are no take way which mean if you really wanna to have to go.
Please kindly just bring a yr own container.
Gentle reminder : Bring sufficient box as there are chilli and rice in e set.Not forgetting the plastic carrier but to save e earth use recycle bag..
I think e best thing is juz pass e smile around..cheers..
Thank u for time and attention.
The opening time stated there is 11.12 am till sold out. Very flavourful chilli, not just hot. $4.00 for the black/white set is good value for money. I don't think the tastiness of the soup comes from MSG. Whether it is or not MSG, I didn't have any MSG reactions like becoming very thirsty (which I normally will get after eating food with MSG). Very tasty fish soup, kind of addicted to it now after eating it twice last week. Too bad they are not open on weekends and no takeaways.
