Annie's Peanut Ice Kachang: The Original Peanut Ice Kachang?

Do you think that Ice Kachang is the quintessential Singaporean Dessert? When you think of a typical Singaporean dessert, does Ice Kachang immediately come to mind? I think it is, even though I seldom order Ice Kachang nowadays, preferring Cheng Tng or Tau Suan. But if you should ask me to draw a Singaporean dessert, I think I would draw a Ice Kachang. It's like if someone were to ask yo to draw a pet, you would draw a dog or a cat. Ice Kachang is the icon of Singapore dessert. Agree or not?
So how to make your Ice Kachang stand out from the rest? Do what Annie does and cover the mountain of ice with a thick layer of mushy red beans and top that with freshly roasted ground peanuts. This must be a good idea given that after Annie's started doing this, other Ice Kachang stalls have also decided to copy this idea. (As I am told)
The mushy red beans were done the way I like them - nice and mushy and not overly sweet. But it was the ground peanuts that really impressed me. In a day and age where these can easily be bought from a supplier, it is heartening to see a tray of freshly roasted peanuts sitting in the stall. This sort of passion for details is what makes the difference. 4.25/5
Conclusion
Still not a huge fan of Ice Kachang, but it is deeply rewarding to taste freshly ground roasted peanuts on Ice Kachang.

to me, a good ice kacang should have quality cincau, red bean paste and corn. i like their idea of the refined peanuts...adds aroma and texture to the dessert...yummy!
I'd say each country has their own quintessential ice-kacang-like dessert.
I love the peanut ice kacang from that stall; the food-court ripoffs of this dessert are just never good enough.
But I do love the "ice kacang" I had in China; there was red bean (the bigger variety) and sour plum sauce. My favourite!
Finally! Somewhere I have been to before! Only once. I love ice kachang and I love peanuts. Put the 2 together, it's pure joy! I like lots of red bean too..must be the mushy type. I must go back there again.
Coincidentally, I just had this yesterday lunchtime. IMHO, the only good thing about Annie Ice Kachang was that the ice is very finely shaven. Other than that, the ingredients are very bare - no attap chee or jelly, and meagre portions of chendol and red beans.
My favourite Peanut Ice Kachang was at Maxwell Market where they used both fine and coarsely ground peanuts. But the owners seem to have sold the stall to new operators, and it has since gone downhill.
My favourite is also Peanut Ice Kachang at Maxwell.
So the middle aged couple sold their stall? That's sad. They used to be at Lau Pa Sat selling beancurd, however, the exhorbitant rent forced them out.
Was happy to find them again at Maxwell and if they have really sold their stall, then it's quite a sad thing.
Will drop by next week to check it out again.
did not get a chance to try the ice kachang!, but the chendol with the finer shaved ice is good...
i tink there's another stall selling peanut ice kachang behind annie's directly. forgot the stall name. I prefer that cos it's not too sweet... not too 'gelat'
rcxx is right. I saw a makansutra poster at his stall. I did not try as I cant take sugar/sweet.
I have to agree that the ingredients are very bare. Lots of ice and peanuts.
There are better stalls that give more ingredients and at a cheaper price.
My all-time favourite peanut ice kacang is at "Ken's Delights" at Dunman Food Centre. It's really the best, and one of my favourite desserts! Almost go there every week!
Yup, agree that the single most important strength about Annie's is that the ice is very finely shaven. Annie sells quite good chendol too.
The stall that is directly behind Annie's has a Makansutra poster too but the standard may have dropped.
Yes. The stall behind Annie's standard has dropped drastically since the 90s. I practically grown up in Tanjong Pagar and Ice Kacang is my favourite dessert, so I have eaten numerous times at both stores. I think I can even give a detailed description of the difference between the 2 stores.haha..
I shouldnt go in the debate (and long history) of who started the Peanut Ice Kacang, but what I can say is Peanut Ice Kacang definitely started in Tanjong Pagar.
