Chicken House: Does coffee really enhance the taste of Chicken Rice?
My psychiatrist friend was telling me about his habit of eating chicken rice with a cup of coffee. He told me that somehow the coffee has the effect of enhancing the taste of chicken rice. Now this is the first time I am hearing of this so I was pretty bemused. I tried it, but I have to say that it didn't do anything for me! Oh, he explained that it did not do much for him too because the chicken rice that day was just not that great to start with. But perhaps there are readers out there who also subscribe to this coffee and chicken rice technique? Perhaps you can share with us your experiences?
By the way, chicken rice, according to our online poll is the 2nd most favourite hawker dish in Singapore after Hokkien Mee. This might be surprising to some readers but the numbers so far are pretty consistent.
Personally, I have always been partial to "Kampung" chicken. I always prefer the soft, white, voluptuous type that you can really sink your teeth into. After all, a "Kampung" chicken doesn't really come from a Kampung. It just looks as if it did because it is leaner. And that yellow colouring on the skin really comes from the use of yellow ginger. So those readers who insist that "Kampung" chicken is the real deal, well, you can imagine that you are eating a chicken that has been running around someone's Kampung house if it really makes the chicken tastier.
As "Kampung" chicken goes, this one is ok. All the ones I have tasted so far have been ok. The rice as already mentioned was nothing to rave about and the chicken was too lean and athletic for me, but it is good for those who are looking after their cholesterol intake and are around the Thomson area. 3.75/5
Conclusion
So how many people out there are "Kampung" chicken rice people and how many are "Voluptuous" chicken rice people? And also, how many people actually subscribe to the coffee enhancing the taste of the chicken rice thingy?

kampong chicken for me!
haha, a possible idea for the next poll?
Coffee puts the system under the strain of metabolizing a deadly acid-forming drug, depositing its insoluble cellulose, which cements the wall of the liver, causing this vital organ to swell to twice its proper size. In addition, coffee is heavily sprayed. (Ninety-two pesticides are applied to its leaves.) Diuretic properties of caffeine cause potassium and other minerals to be flushed from the body.
All this fear went away when I quit, and it was a book that inspired me to do it called The Truth About Caffeine by Marina Kushner. There are five things I liked about this book:
1) It details--thoroughly--the ways in which caffeine may damage your health.
2) It reveals the damage that coffee does to the environment. Specifically, coffee was once grown in the shade, so that trees were left in place. Then sun coffee was introduced, allowing greater yields but contributing to the destruction of rain forests. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else.
3) It explains how best to go off coffee. This is important. If you try cold turkey, as most people probably do, the withdrawal symptoms will likely drive you right back to coffee.
4) Helped me find a great resource for the latest studies at CaffeineAwareness.org
5) Also, if you drink decaf you won’t want to miss this special free report on the dangers of decaf available at www.soyfee.com
Never tried chicken rice and coffee. But fried rice and coffee works for me.
Try durian with chicken rice. I like that.
This chicken rice stall is near my house but although it says it sells "kampung chicken", if anyone has tasted REAL kampung chicken before in malaysia, you will know that it is extremely tough, much tougher than those commonly sold in singapore. My grandmother always cooks it when i visit malacca and i always have a big battle trying to pry the meat off the bone and then chewing it like chewing gum.
Anyway, kampung chicken not really for me. Thomson has many chicken rice stalls. The best one i have tasted so far is the one further down near novena opposite the church you may want to give that a try. And it sells the voluptuous one that you like!
Have tried this Chicken House, chicken rice and never went back again.Really don't understand the fuss about Kampung chicken
I have been pass this shop a number of times but as I do not like kampong chicken, I have never given it a try.
The only thing that catches my attention is that for a chicken rice shop, it has a crab logo.
:-)
Dun tink they will go well together, the sweetness of the coffee will drown the flavour and probably closed up the palate.
wow i never thought a food craze like you wld get the facts wrong abt a dish so high favoured by readers. the yellowish skin is NOT caused by yellow ginger, but is due to the food the kampung chickens are fed. corn fed kampung chickens will have skin tt is more yellow than "regular" chickens.
it is the corn, not the ginger.
Yes Kampung chicken skin is a little more yellow but when they prepare the chicken, they use yellow ginger to make it even more yellow. This info is not only from this stall but also the other Kampung chicken stalls that I have eaten at.
You may want to try having chicken rice with white wine. When I was studying in Switzerland, we always have tea or white wine with cheese fondue. Reason being these drinks help to break down the fat content and allows you to taste the food better, aid digestion too. I tried this theory with chicken rice as the rice is cooked in chicken fats. I enjoy the pairing.
i luv the kampung chicken that my aunty brings back from Indonesia! Duno bout the Malaysian ones but the Indon ones r really really good! Hv no idea where she buys them from tho..
kampong please :)
um..i have to speak up for my friend, the cup o joe :)
i disagree with Anonymous' posting about how coffee is bad for ya.
i dont think caffeine is bad for you, if taken moderately, depending on your tolerance. just like any other food/beverage. moderate consumption is the key. i think.
a cup or two is okay. up to 200-300 mg of caffeine per day. for a normal healthy person. well, that's my take. not sure if the jury is still out on that one or not.
Wine pairing? ooh...
Maybe Chatterbox caters to that eh =)
With inflation setting in, i dunno about the rest of you, but 10 bucks for half a chicken is a decent steal...grab it while it lasts
Never heard about the coffee part.. but i still prefer chicken rice from balestier.. :)
Hi Holy drummer, the wine pairing is done at home....tapao lah. Have you tried white pepper crabs with champagne? I used to bring my own sparkling when I dine at No Signboard, Kallang river outlet. weekends,1.30pm to avoid the crowd. You can watch ppl canoeing while having crabs with sparkling. Try it, very enjoyable experience.
Shan
Hey Shan,
Wine pairing for me is pretty rare - like only during really special occasions, when I'm not alone *wink*
Haha in all honesty I've yet to truly appreciate the fine art of wine-n-dine. Still discerning... =p
Thanks for the advice!
Shucks...the price has gone up by a dollar. Half chicken is now 11 bucks, as of 24 NOv 07
