The Foodie's Code

I believe that everyone who considers themselves a foodie will subconsciously follow a set of unwritten rules. I thought it would be fun to list these down so we can gauge just how much of a foodie we really are. So I am going to start with a few and let you all suggest some more to add onto the list!

The Foodie's Code

1. Never waste your calories on yukky food!

2. One should not brag about how good a certain food stall is without telling others exactly where it is.

3. A real foodie will never reject someone's offer of damn shiok food even when she is already extremely full.

4. If someone else says that something is really really good, then it behooves the foodie to at least give it a try.

5. The only thing better then really good food is when the really good food is free!

6. Good food tastes even better with good company!

7. A real foodie will be busy planning his next meal while he is devouring his present.

8. Never rely on the recommendation of others, trust only your own tastebuds.

9. Neither height, nor depth, nor distance, nor price, nor threats, nor dangers, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate the foodie from his favourite food!

If the food is really good, I can visit the stall every week at least twice...:)

or everyday... :)over the next week...

A real foodie will describe the really good food experience whilst salivating, and there may be a few droplets that appears in the corners of the mouth during the description.

3) can't be right without a satisfactory definition of 'extremely full'. Because then the logical conclusion is that the foodie, in some situations, will eat till his stomach bursts. That's not a foodies, that's a glutton.

I suggest 'reasonably full' instead.

I really like teh 5th line =D

If the food is not good and there is no other source of good food around, the foodie goes hungry until access to a place that sells tasty food is obtained

(I'm like that anyway)

ieat said...

I think t1racyjacks statement is another way of saying "never waste your calories on yukky food" right? I agree wholeheartedly of course!

Agree, I like t1trackyjacks quote though I think it is different from "never waste your calories on yukky food".

Nonetheless, I would re-write teh quote as "A real foodie will climb every mountain, cross every sea just to eat something that someone says is a "die die must try"!" That's what we mean by "die die must try".

I have another quote.
"A foodie will be planning his/her next meal when devouring his/her current one."

Cheers!

Food is about agriculture, about ecology, about man's relationship with nature, about the climate, about nation-building, cultural struggles, friends and enemies, alliances, wars, religion. It is about memory and tradition and, at times, even about sex.

My dear boss, when curds are churned, the finest part rises upward and turns into butter. So too, dear boss, when food is eaten the choice parts rise upward and become mind.

Cheers...

Good food ends with good talk.

If you think that any of these quotes should be included into the Foodie Code, do write in to support it and I will then put it officially in the list!

Yup. A foodie is not a glutton, but a food-lover who is discriminating about what he/she eats.

Therefore, a foodie has the right NOT to blindly follow recommendations (which are a dime a dozen from all sorts of subjective tastebuds) but is willing to seek out good eats, wherever these are located. An adventurous spirit tempered by wise judgement! We can listen to recommendations, keep them in mind but we don't HAVE TO feel obliged to try them out. Finite calories, finite time (and budget!) dictates that we choose wisely.

As for no.5 - I'd say really good food is only better when enjoyed with good company/fellow foodies! (Heck, I'm sure we've tried free good food during working lunches and wished it was someone else we were dining with)

And yes, a foodie is always thinking of what food to try out next! :D

Here we do greet someone 'chiak ba beh' or have u eaten?
A foodie may also think about what he/she will be having the next meal while enjoying his food.

i agree totally with camembru on both counts -
a true foodie should never blindly follow the recommendations of others, which is the easy tried and tested way, but willing to try new things and discover new places serving good food.
and also right to say that good food tastes even better with good company, and conversation.

personally, i hv come to a point where i try also to differentiate good food from great food.

the latter being that on the first bite, will draw all kinds of emotions, memories and sensations, and the taste will envelop and overwhelm one's senses for that moment - where nothing else except the gastronomic experience matters. just that fleeting moment. and then, that experience lingers, giving you complete satisfaction, yet wanting more.

thats great food to me... hah.. food porn eh?

Good company beats free food anyday.

I so agree with Camemberu and Holy drummer. Food tastes better when you are enjoying with a fellow foodie and A true foodie does not eat, he tastes.

Hey Holy drummer, I left you a comment under Chicken House.

A foodie goes to bed everynight with the expectation of having a hearty breakfast, a wonderful lunch, and a elaborate dinner and actually knowing where he is going to have each meal!

Cause that's what I do... =)

Wow....nice quotes...haahaa...very honestly and personally, i feel ieat website is definitely more organised, informative, interactive, constructive and useful as compared to the self proclaimed food guru makan sutra - seeto!

Ate the food he recommended, half of them are rubbish! Close to even not edible and let alone tasty!

Kudos to you Dr. Tay and your team =)...keep up the good work!

Yes, totally agree with calories are finite so we need to be discerning about what we eat !

Ah,I totally appreciate the masters who so lovingly put their hearts and their souls into preparing their specialties for us. It takes alot of love and dedication , me thinks , for food to be cooked well and good.

A dish that we devour in minutes, is the outcome of many hours of preparation and in many instances, with years and even decades spent, gaining experiences and honing cooking techniques.

: )

a REAL foodie should welcome all sorts of food that's well acclaimed even if he/she doesn't like it! (e.g. hating sotong but daring to try famous ones!)

liverpool1965 said...

ieat...you forgot one of your earlier codes... :)...never say you have eaten the BEST...there is always a better one you have not found yet...or something to that effect...:)

A foodie should be able to give such a moving review that influences others to give it a try.

No where is too far away for a foodie if it means tasting good food.

A foodie plans his itinerary around food while on holiday.

Leslie, you can only know whether is it yukky food after you order and try. If you order already, it is yukky, you still have to eat what. So your notion of never waste calories on yukky food is only a myth since you are always on the road trying food you never tried before.

ieat said...

If it is yukky, I don't eat the rest of it. That's the whole point!

A foodie must be able to eat, drink and be merry & make merry. Imagine dining with a sulking face???? The food sure taste bad la....

To blur ting:

Wah, if my gf sees ur comment, i will die lor...becos she loves fd and everytime we go holiday...she will want to try all the recommendations found on the brochures...zoink!

a foodie visits ieatishootipost at least once a day, in hope of seeing a new >4.5 rating post

xxoos said...

the extent i go to not waste my calories on yucky food is quite extreme, almost to the extent that my dad calls me chao kuan.

the food which i do not like are consumed by my dad and/or my bf, leaving myself to only eat the nice parts. like sandwiches, my bf would eat the bread parts without filling leaving me to eat the parts with filling and not get too full from the boring plain breads and leaving the stomach empty enough to eat other nice food. erm, not that this is a good thing, but at least there's not wastage...
