Tanjong Pagar Fried Kway Teow: Should the Kway Teow be thick or thin?

The review of this Char Kway Teow is mixed. I thought that it was very good, but others in our group thought it was good but not that good. However, being a 30 year old stall, I am sure that they will have their regular supporters.

The thing that is distinct about their Char Kway Teow is the use of thin Kway Teow rather than the usual wider version. Somehow I felt this made the Kway Teow more lively. Sometimes, the thicker Kway Teow can be a little flat and limp, if you know what I mean. The look and texture of the Kway Teow was reminiscent of Penang style Char Kway Teow but tastewise, this is your typical Singaporean Teochew style Char Kway Teow. It is also a little on the sweeter side which really agrees with my palate. However, it fell just short of crossing the Wok Hei threshold. A bit more charred flavour could have pushed it up to the "Must Try" rating! 4/5



Conclusion

If you are a Char Kway Teow afficianado, you should have this one on your "Been there, done that list". Something you would want to try if you are within the one kilometer radius and yearning for good Char Kway Teow.

BTW, do you all feel that classic Char Kway Teow should have the wider Kway Teow or not?

I have never tried at this stall but I often cook fried kway teow at home for the kids using this thin version. I find it has got a spring to the texture (like the pad thai noodle)and can withstand longer frying time. I can even add some broth to make a wet version without them turning into a soggy mess.

Yes this CKT is 30years old. Been eating since my working days. However the lady frying the CKT is new to me.Unfortunately, she lack the passion.

I love both thick and thin kway teow, as long as it is made of rice flour! haha..

I see from the photo that there's no yellow noodles mixed into it. I hate those mixed with yellow noodles. eeee... ( I think I dont like the smell of yellow noodles )

I love thin kway teow! Wet wet ones! Yum! But so sinful...must refrain from eating too much.

I donch mind either..! i've always thought kway teow as being healthier ..and easier to swallow then mee. I donch quite get mee anyways.

Depends - if it's normal CKT I like them to be the thick ones. Thin ones for Penang CKT :)

My list of places to eat in Singapore is getting longer by the day - need to stay longer ;)

i differ likewise.i think this CKT is much different from the other stalls that could be seen around in many parts of singapore. this stall uses the thiner KT from the usual thicker KT which makes chewing longer hence the original ''flour-y'' taste would be tasted making it taste ...

i personally think this stall's CKT is nice after trying it =)

The char kuay teow is ok only, but the nasi lemak next to it (xiang xiang) is heavenly.

There is one stall @ the Block 39 market Telok Blangah Rise. He sells Char Kway Teow, it has plenty of ingredients and even adds in fish cakes! I'm no fan of fish cakes, but it blends in really well. The uncle usually opens his stall in the early evenings, sometimes his kway teow runs out, so he wld fry bee hoon oso. All with the ever sinful lard. A MUST TRY!!! If you go anyday between a Thursday to Sunday, there is another stall nearby that sells oyster omelette that is deliciously delicious! Fantastic discoveries @ HDB hawkers.
