When do you waste your calories on Yukky Food?
When you are in hospital and don't have a choice, that's when!
Last week has been a difficult week for me to say the least. I was admitted to hospital for an operation to remove my gallbladder. Technically, it is called a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. In layman terms, it means to remove the gallbladder through keyhole surgery.
In retrospect, I probably had the problem with gallbladder stones for a few years already. I have had to rush to hospital on a few occasions in the past with severe tummy ache which I always attributed to food poisoning.
So how come this Doctor could not even diagnose his own condition? Well, it's the furthest thing on my mind since gallbladder stones, as traditionally taught in medical school, usually occurs in "Fair, Fat, Fertile, Females in their Forties". Now I don't qualify for any of that, so how the heck did I end up with gallstones?
Anyway, having "chronic cholecystitis" meant that because of the intermittent blockage, the whole gallbladder had become inflamed, which meant that I had a sense of prolonged fullness and discomfort especially after big (and fatty) meals. So here comes my confession. When I go on my food tasting trips, that is precisely what I do, I only taste the food. I don't usually overeat or else I get bloated for the rest of the day! Thankfully, I have my makankakis to always help to eat up the food!
So anyway, now that I am fixed, thanks to my good friend and surgeon, Dr S K Wong from Digestive Health Associates, I look forward to more makan escapades. Though this time round, I have to be really careful, or else I will really be putting on the kilos since I don't have my diseased gallbladder to stop me from eating too much!
So thanks for continuing to read the blog even though it has slowed down for a little while. I do have a backlog of food places and I will continue to publish as regularly as I can. And if you have been having problems with your digestion, and happen to be a "Fair, Fat, Fertile, Female in her Forties", may I encourage you to visit your GP and get an Ultrasound of the gallbladder done. Those darn little gallstones can really cause a lot of problems!
And yes before I forget, let me comment on the hospital fish porridge which was my first meal after surgery. With all due respect to the hospital cooks, it really wasn't their fault that I could not order lamb chops which I am sure would be quite good -- the fish porridge was Bleeeeaaachhh!! 1/5

Happy eating fm now onwards! Tk care.
ps. I dun need to check my gall baldder right?
Oh I've had tried every porridge "flavour" available while I was in hospital. Every one was 4/5 water, 1/5 rice. Yuk!
i think ALL hospitals serve yucky food. I have never heard anyone say that they like the food they ate in hospital.
get well soon!
i think hospitals really must revamp the quality of the food man.
but then again, patients cannot take too flavoured stuffs, thats why everything's bland.
*pats*
I have had a few unfortunate opportunities of tasting hospital food. Yeah, while I agree that hospital porridges are really yucks but the other food on the menu is usually quite good considering that it is served in a hospital. Either that or I'm really hungry!! Btw, the hospital I'm refering to is Gleneagles and never take the local menu, always the Western..
well, your health would be the ultimate concern here. so get well soon...
i certainly look forward to more food ratings from you!!! that, would be the 2nd concern. Lol...
have fun tasting not-so-great hospital food fare for now.
P/S: i think some hospital food ain't that bad though...
Hope you're feeling much better now! Get well and get out there to bring us more fantastic photos and great eats!
Oh my, do take care! Don't strain yourself too much...=)
Oh suckage. You seem to know about the gallbladder, bile, and the emulsification fats and all so you'll probably have to cut back on fatty foods. So tragic for a foodie.
Is this the first 1/5 review?!? haha.
Is it true that after the gallbladder is removed, you cant have food that is too oily and spicy? And why do some only remove the stones while others the whole gallbladder? (sorry for so many medical questions!) Hope you are better now!
Oh man, 1/5... that must be so bad...
Get well quickly so you can continue your food tasting journey again.
the porridge looks good! hehe just need a drizzle of soya sauce, fried shallots, sliced abalone....:)....take care and we makan something less taxing on the stomach the next few weeks...
Actually I am already back at work and starting to eat stuff again. Anyone else had their gallbladder removed?
good that you are back in action!
hmmm but hor.... hospital food not that bad right? i mean the staff canteen and food courts type, not the one you eat in the wards :-p
colleagues and i, we eat quite often in hospital situated at kent ridge :-p
ut removing your gallbladder means you can't take oily stuff anymore right?

>> zephyr: ermm.. i loved my hospital food and that was in SGH. was warded for a sudden epileptic attack then. that was 6 yrs ago and i still rem the taste of the minced pork stuffed in taupok... delicious...
Get well soon doc!
Gleneagles used to serve really really good western restaurant standard meals. Their local fare like hor fan, fried rice, was also pretty good. To me, it was like dining at Silver Spoon then. I used to look forward to meal times there! The food was beautifully presented and always served on an embroidered tray cloth and came with a rolled napkin in a ring! I remember the breakfast toast was placed on a metal toast rack. That was some 20 years ago, not sure about now since it has changed management.
The food at SGH (about 10 years ago) was awful awful. Will always remember the taste of the porridge. Tastes worse than it looks. Of course, no tray cloth or rolled napkin!
Thank God you are well now. Your body is a temple of God, so wisdom is the key brother!
Take care, though we appreciate your updates, nothing beats having a healthy body.
God Bless

*gasp.... make appointment for check-up.... *
i was wondering if those recipes online to wash out gallstones are true....
healthy food doesn't have to taste bland and awful.. my mother cooks healthy food by using very little oil, salt etc, but the stuff she cooks still tastes great :)
i guess the cook matters more than the ingredients/condiments. a good cook can still whip up miracles using healthy, seemingly bland ingredients. i think the reason why hospital food tastes so awful is because most hospital cooks aren't very good.
my grandma was at Bright Vision Hospital. they served vegetarian only meals to all the patients and visitors.
while the food for visitors was yummy, since we paid $3 for a meal made up of rice or noodles and a selection of veggies; i cannot say the same for the patient's food.
but they have no choice. some are given food because of their health. low salt, low sugar, blended, chopped, and diluted. it all depends.
but my grandma was so sick, she couldn't eat anyway. she had a NGT poked down her throat into her stomach. they gave her vanilla and sometimes they gave her chocolate milk. but it didn't make a difference, because the milk didn't get pass her taste buds.
hospital food can be good. but at that stage in life, especially for the terminally ill, eating becomes a huge effort.
enjoy our chilli crabs while we're healthy and alive!!
Yes indeed, we need to be thankful to be able to wake up everyday with a good appetite to enjoy good food. It is a blessing that we often take for granted.
