Chocolat N Spice: Hotel quality Muffins at Hawker Prices

With liverpool, iwatch_ueat, zanzoo, pk, smart, AlecEe and Kat

What's the difference between a cupcake and a muffin? Like many things in life, it may be hard to define the differences, but when you see a muffin, you know its a muffin. But if you ask me what the real difference is, I'd say a muffin is a bit lighter then a cupcake. Whereas a cupcake has the texture and density of a butter cake, a muffin is more akin to a spongecake. Perhaps the bakers can further enlighten us on the differences?

Anyway, you all know that I am always out and about looking for stuff that is shiok and value for money at the same time. So, "hotel quality muffins at hawker prices" sounds pretty good to me.

I am not big on muffins per se, so if you had asked me before this where the best muffins in Singapore are, I wouldn't have a clue. But now, at least I can tell you of one that has left quite a good impression on me.

So why are these muffins so special? Well, the lady behind the whole thing happened to be the pastry chef of the now defunct Lighthouse restaurant. So her vision is to make quality muffins available at fantastic prices ($1.10 ea). And for that price, she doesn't skimp on the quality of the ingredients either. One of the most popular muffins are her double chocolate chip muffins which uses some exotic chocolate from France.

My favourite part of the muffin is the crispy rim of the crust. This was was crisp and just slightly sticky from the caramelized sugar. Just the way I like it. The inside is light, yet buttery and fragrant. When I eat muffins, I usually take only one, but I have to say that I was very much tempted to take at least 2 or 3 that day. Of course, waiting in the queue for several minutes and smelling the aroma of freshly baked muffins does stimulate the appetite to a large extent! 4.5/5

Conclusion

I am the latest Muffin convert. Still thinking of going down this week to buy some more!

Hehe.. you got the cupcake and muffin thing the wrong way round. Cupcakes are more like sponge cakes and tend to have icing/misc toppings. Muffins are denser and tend to have dried fruit/chocolate chips inside the dough.

think there's another branch somewhere near thomson plaza? A close competitor to these muffins are the ones sold at Bugis Junction basement(under the Lumont chocolate shop), with another branch at AMK hub. Can give it a try and compare!

Hey, there's another one at Amoy Food centre 2nd flr, called Bake Of Amoy Street (opp the ondeh ondeh stall featured by Dr Tay too). They sell at $1.00 each And my favourite is Blueberry and Apple Cinamon. I always call to order or you be dissapointed. From 11am till sold out by 2pm. But by then my favourites will be gone! Long Q too. Value for money!

Hi There! Yeah~ Muffins are the denser versions, and can even be savoury... they are also kinda bumpy and clumpy, created so by barely combining all ingredients together. As for cupcakes, they are light and fluffy, really a cake texture in a cup! Most of the time being sweet or plain with icing. Anyways... these cupcakes are pretty plain... tried them before but i still feel homemade's best~

Hi smart. I'm a muffin lover, see muffins, go for muffins and see nothing else. Maybe you guys should do a review on the donuts and milk and let us know if it's good! Though I'm not a fan.

they were featured on newspaper long long time ago. One of the sisters were some chef in some restaurant, hotels, i cant remember.

When they started off, their stall only opened for a few days per wk! When they were opened, the queue was always long.

Down the road, there is another famous stall, baker's story. They sell v fantastic cheese brownie! That, u have to try. If u want cheese brownie for christmas, its the time to book. Might to already be late...

I tried this since the first store at Shunfu, never thought it to be fantastic. There's a Muffin store at Amoy Hawker Centre. I think this one is really good, especially the blueberry muffin which has thick blueberry jam in the centre and it oozes out when you bite into it - heaven!

have always liked the muffins as they are usually fresh out of the oven...could take 2-3 at a go... :)

If you head there again you can also try their brownie. At 1.60 each, the big slice of brownie with generous chunks of walnuts and semi-melted chocolate chips is really value for money!

"Spot-on" on my family's favourite muffins! But I am definitely going to try the ones at Amoy Hawker Centre too. That's the merit of this blog: One good recommendation begets another...

The way I know it, cupcakes tend to be smaller with frosting on top.

C&S is my favourite. Do check out the one at Lor 1 Toa Payoh Food Centre too.

out of all the muffins i've tried, this is still the best for me. how i judge a good muffin? as long as it doesn't leave a weird, gritty feeling on my tongue after consumption, then it's good. can't wait to go back to shunfu market for more!

Muffins are fabulous. My favourite is probably the blueberry and double chocolate is a close second. That said, all are delicious!
You should try the cakes as well. I used to go down almost every week to load up on muffins and cheesecake. The brownie and pies are good as well. :)

Hi smart, could you tell me how to get to the TPY Lorong 1 Food Center Choc and Spice outlet? Maybe with respect to the TPY MRT?

Damien said...

And while you are at the muffin store at Toa Payoh Lor 1, can also try the Hokkien Mee :)

One of the better ones located at Toa Payoh.

To rczx & damien, Sorry I caused some confusion. The one at Toa Payoh is NOT a branch of C&S. It is at Blk 127 T.P Lor. 1. (dont know how to go there by bus/mrt). This hawker centre is opposite G.E a double storey, upstair are the Food stalls.
I dont know if there is a good Hokkien mee stall there but there are 2 good fried carrot stalls and the TEOCHEW Handmade Pau is very good especially the 'kong bak pau and lo ma kai.
Damien I think you are referring to the Hokkien mee stall at Shunful next to C&S

liverpool1965 said...

is the Toa Payoh stall that you mentioned run by a guy who used to run a cze char stall?...I still prefer C&S.... ;)

rczx said...

haha it's ok smart... yeah i was *scratching my head* and wondering... cos i tot C&S's other branch was at shunfu there... thanks for the update though...

There is a new muffin shop just below my block 608 AMK Ave 5. It's call Pateli's Crave. I can smell muffins early in the morning. They open from 7.30am - 5pm from Mon-Fri, Sat till 2pm and close on Sun & Public holidays. They sell cupcakes too.
I like their banana walnuts and chocolate chips.

I have tried Lumont's muffins, they're nice at times but there are times when me and my friends bought, the muffins were alittle hard. Was wondering if they were fresh... Anyone any idea?
