Jing Hua Sliced Fish Bee Hoon: Ooommmph!

With Damien and smart

This is simply the most delicious fish soup I have had this year. I had my doubts at first when smart was lining up for the fish soup, but my first taste of it was quite a Holy Grail experience. OK I admit it, even though I have always called myself a Teochew Ah Hia, I think that I prefer the Cantonese Style milky fish soup to the Teochew version. Oops! I think I can hear my ancestors all turning in their graves.

Forget all that hype about XO, if you've got a tasty fish soup, you don't need to hide behind the veil of XO brandy. Plus the best thing is that you don't have to pay a bomb for the fish soup because it comes in individual servings. The only problem with it is the long queue even in off peak periods. But there is a good reason why there is a queue and it is because each bowl of soup is made individually. But take it from me, the queue is worth it especially when it is someone else who doing the queueing (Thanks Uncle Smart). 4.75/5

Conclusion

It's really shiok. This one I am certain that many will agree.

Wow, I had this some weeks back before the rain and the floods. It was great despite the heat, loooond queue, pespiration etc etc etc. One of the best fish soup around.....Wish they move to an air-con place....

Les, there's another fish soup (air-con) place opposite Bugis Junction, perhaps you can make a comparison btw the two.

I agree that this is probably one of the better, if not the best, tasting fish soup around! But I couldn't quite discern the difference in portion between the $4 and $5 bowls.

Just one commemt.....wish thay can use freshly fried schallots instaed of the commercial one.

Sadly, commercial fried schallots is the worst that have happened to the food scene here.

Hey, I completely agree with you! This is one of my top hawker stalls, and I've tried fish soup from quite a few stalls over singapore, and I still think this is the best.

This is my favourite stall too.

However, if you are at Thomson Plaze try the one in the food court. I think it taste good(fried version) and in the comfort of the aircon at only $4.

i tried tis yesterday but sad to say.. i think tis is really one of e worst fish soup i've ever tried.. i'm not sure if it's due to e "cook" or standard drop.. it was a young man doing e cooking..

my thick bee-hoon was e soggiest thick bee-hoon i've eaten.. e fish slices, although quite generous - 8 big slices of fish, were tough & tasted slightly fishy..

bee-hoon too soft & fish slices too tough when i feel should be e other way round.. i like my thick bee-hoon to have e qq & chewy texture there..

as for e soup, i find tat e young man put too much carnation milk, i dun taste any freshness in e soup at all..

les, i think u should go try e sliced fish noodle at The Sail Grill & Bar. it's a restaurant situated along church street, just behind my office.. e sliced fish are fried to perfection, very fresh & nicely marinated wif hua teow wine..

for someone like me who dun fancy fish soup, tis is one sliced fish noodles i would recommend to sliced fish noodles lovers..

lunch, uncle smart?

khim said...

it's actually a set meal available both during lunch & dinner.. e sliced fish noodles set is around $11.90++? which comes wif free flow soup, coffee/tea, dessert of e day & a big bowl of noodles wif freshly fried sliced fish on e side..

let me know if u wanna have lunch together, liverpool! ;)

i used to love this fish soup. but have stopped going as often since i found out that they use dory - yuck.

if you're not put off by the use of dory, and still want to eat there, don't bother queuing if it is the young man cooking (their rest day is thursday, and if you find they are open on a thursday, then it's because its the young man cooking).

he lets the soup overboil - i think because he can't manage cooking three bowls at one go. the milk they put inside the soup becomes all separated and gross. also, he puts too much sesame oil.

it's much much better when the regular man does the cooking.
