Kheng Fatt Beef Noodles: Do You Prefer Soup or Dry?
Damien says it is damn shiok. Makansutra nominated them for street hawker masters for 2007 and they have been around since 1978. So, according to the theory of evolution, this should be good since its the survival of the fittest or should I say, the survival of the tastiest. Yes this sounds like one those stalls I need to add to my collection.
I usually eat the dry version of beef kway teow because I figured that you get the best of both worlds when you eat the dry version since you still get the soup at the side. Also the dry version has got more kick from the sticky thick gravy that covers all the bee hoon.
After all that preamble, it would not surprise you if I said "Hmmm, I thought it should have been better" OK, it is a good bowl of beef noodles but again it lacked that elusive oooomph factor. The soup was robust and sweet but it does not stand heads and shoulders above the other famous beef kway teow previously featured on the blog. Then again, I might have raised my expectations too high after all the hype. 4/5
One thing that really did stand out though was the chilli sauce with chinchaluk (shrimp sauce). Now this chilli really did redeem the situation as I really got a real savoury and spicy kick out of it.
Conclusion
Another famous Beef Kway Teow. Better than most, but not quite the Holy Grail of Beef Kway Teow.

i've tried this stall n the lim kee beef noodle(B1 at golden mile) which u onced reviewed..this sure beats lim kee....till now i still dun understand why u gave a 4.5/5 for lim kee..
One of the better beef kway teow around, albeit the portions have steadily shrunk though throughout the years due to rising food cost.
Prefer the soup than dry version here.
This is one of the better beef noodle stalls, beside the one at Toa Payoh. All the other stalls are so so to me.
The best for me is the one at China Sq. Hock Lam. Not many people know, but this is the real Hock Lam. Other Hock Lams are also from the same family, but the original owner for this one has been doing this biz with his father since young, unlike the rest (other siblings) who just ride on the name.
Now it has been carried on by his ex-banker daughter. Think prices higher? Quality should still be about the same.
Eh damien, u bias ah..i remembered u commenting some of the beef stores and other fd stores' portions shrunk but this one shrunk, u said due to rising costs...no gd ah, u...haahaa
good food, not good customer service.
Likewise, the standard of this dropped quite abit, guess due to the long working hours but still acceptable level though...long working hours must have taken the toll of him...we cant expect superbly gd customer service when the poor chap only has 1-2helpers! Try doing it urself, put urself in their positions, appreciate the food and not always pin pointing on the unnecessary...
Lim Kee makes their own Beef Balls and I like Beef Balls!

Beef balls in Singapore no standard lah. Eat those in Thailand and JB better. Can try those thai stalls at Golden Mile for their beef balls. Understand they bring in from southern thailand. Managed to get some to try from someone who bought from the stall holders.

OH YA! agree totally, beef balls in Sg, no standards...just came back from bkk...wowwwwwww....n more wowwwwwwwws for the beef balls...here, nothing even beat our neighbours, JB...
Hi ieat & itreat, tried their beef balls, so-so only, if really for rating only 2/5...nothing springy or juicy...guess only fish balls in singapore r nice =(

You were saying that the Hock Nam at China Square is the original stall, what about the stall at purvis street? Is that the split off and part of the same family or another stall altogether. Just curious.
Can i answer that for u, beeflover? 1st, its Hock Lam, not Hock Nam, 2nd its at Fareast Square not China square...haahaa...yes, the one at Fareast Square is the original shop, purvis st is not related to them (currently run by a bunch of very ill- mannered china women - no offence to anyone but the way they serve us, as if we owe them big bucks to eat there).
Went with my gf 2 weeks ago, while shopping at Bugis for xmas presents...pay me, beg me but never will I step into the shop again! Food is sooooooooooo far off from the original one, and the chilli (yewwww) and its too dirty as well! Thanks to laziness! I should have just heeded my gf's advice to drive to china st to satisfy our beef's urges!
Weel, one thing good about our "adventure", at least now we know what are the standards of these so called hock lams!

& I found the italian shop u recommended. Drove past again last night, just to look for it! going to bring my gf there on tuesday...its our anniversary =)
I personally like the beef kway teow at Purvis street compared to Hock Lam at China Square which is ironically, is also served by a China woman :)
Friend and I often head for this stall whenever we decide to eat at this food center. Agree that portions have shrunk. We love to order the mixed soup with Kuek Tiow. It used to be $4 per bowl but now is $5. Find that if the wife is tending the stall and making the orders she tends to give less ingredients so avoid ordering unless the husband is there dishing out the orders. Why are women so calculative?
People, can we discuss the main character here, which happens to be Kheng Fatt beef and not some other unrelated sites or businesses!

Tried this stall once, turned off by the man's attitude. Went back today after reading this blog. Found service the same. Ordered to mixed meat kway teow dry version. It was very starchy as before, couldn't taste the chincalok in chilli. Fella refuses to sell beef soup without noodle even had put up sign to tell off customers who even dare consider it.

I agree totally what you said! So ironic!...oh oh oh...last nite brought my gf to east coast lagoon for late nite dinner...soo disappointed with the beef k/t. The son and a lady was serving, as usual due to slow service we waited for very long. When came to my turn, the portion shrank drastically to 5 pieces of sliced and 3 mouthfuls of k/t! I had to order another plate of fried oyster, wanton mee, fried rice! And his soup is way tooooooo sweet for me.
Hey, till now none has told me about the French Stall..ieat, can you do a review on that?

Used to love that when I was in my teens too (about 20+ yrs ago)haahaa...anyhow, before scotts fd court closed for reno, i tried it once...totally utterly disappointed...gravy was watery and bland...n the soup, i gotta pay $1 for a miserable of small bowl soup! in the end, i didnt even finished half of it... anyhow..after enquiring from the neighouring stalls, the owner closed down this stall but most of the fd courts now, under the name of hwa hen? should be of the same owner, think the one at tampines fd court is his?...not sure too...

I can't believe they torn down the Scotts Picnic foodcourt. Anybody know where I could find the Beef Noodle stall that was there? I absolutely love the dry version of the Beef Ball noodle.
I am really missing the dry beef noodles from SG. Does anyone has recipe for the dry version?
had tis for dinner yesterday.. took e soup version while bf told e dried version.. dry version has got traces of peanut bits in e sauce.. e sauce is rather "cheng" compared to other dry version i've tried elsewhere..
still prefer e soup version anytime.. e soup is oh-so-shiok n e beef tripe, sliced beef & normal beef is very very tender n chilli sauce is also quite good.. but 1 complaint i have is my order is $5 but e portion is miserably small... =(
had to eat other food to be fuller.. next time have to order 2 bowls then enough!

This stall is better than the Hock Lam at Far East Square any time. Soup is robust and tasty.
Another good one is Empress Place Beef Noodle at East Coast Road. Also better than Far East one. Understand this stall and Hock Lam orignate from the same grandfather's stall at Northe Bridgge Rd/Hock Lam St coffeshop. Cousins.
