Absolute Haven: Fine Dining for the whole Family

Mother's Day Celebrations

Risotto Rice Cakes $8++

There is no problem looking for good food in Singapore if money is not a problem. You just have to go to some really high class restaurant and enjoy a great meal. The tricky thing is how to find a place that serves great food but at a price which would not make you think about going there only on special occasions. Plus, as our blog monitoress, Khim would testify, sometimes you can spend a lot of money at a fancy restaurant and still need to go to the hawker centre afterwards because your stomach is only half full (or half empty depending on whether.... aiyah you heard it all before)

Anyway, I am very pleased to find a restaurant that I think khim would approve.

Absolute Haven was started by a brother and sister team who's idea is to provide value-for-money, fine dining in an informal setting. This is the kind of idea I like since that means that I can bring my kids along and still enjoy a great meal.

We started off with their signature appetizer which is Risotto Rice cakes. Imagine potato rosti but made of rice instead. I liked their parmigiana sauce which has just the right balance of sweetness and tang to it. The Rice Cakes was a little novel for me and I can't really decide if I actually like Rice which is crispy on the outside but mushy like a thick porridge within. Still the strength of the sauce made for quite a tasty bite. 4/5

Yorkshire Pork Rack $23++

Let's move quickly to the dish that I am highly recommending.

When it comes to Grilled Pork Rack, the Yorkshire White Pig is Champion over the Berkshire Black Pig (Kurobuta) in my books. I have a stack of Grilled Kurobuta Pork Rack photos still sitting in my hard drive that will never see the light of a LCD screen. They were expensive and really nothing to write about (at least those that I have tried). Now the Yorkshire Pork Rack is a different story. I have had this twice and both times it has raised my eyelids and delighted my tastebuds.

Not easy to get Pork Chops to remain juicy!

The thing about Pork Chops is that they get dry very easily if not done well. But the Yorkshire Pork Rack tends to be juicy and tender and the pork has a wonderful nutty and earthy flavour about it. Part of the tenderness is due to the fact that they marinade the pork in milk before cooking. They grill it quite nicely here such that the Pork has that wonderful smoky charred flavor. Quite a big portion for $23 and around half the price of the Kurobuta Pork Rack that I've had elsewhere. The jus has just enough umami to bring out the full flavour of the pork. 4.5/5

Lamb Rack $26++

Would you agree with me that it is easier to come across lousy beef than lousy lamb? Most Lamb racks can still "make it" even if they are not cooked well. My usual complain with lamb is that there is never enough to eat because they are so small.

I am happy to report however that you get 3 quite generous cuts of Lamb Rack here and they use quite a good quality Australian chilled lamb, so its tender and juicy. The sauce has just the right amount of sweetness which I like with stronger tasting meats. It was so good that the kids were clamoring for more and we had to order a second portion just for them! (And for the M-I-L too) 4.5/5

Pesto Cod $26++

$26 here buys you two generous slices of "White Cod" (Not gindara, my guess is it's probably Sea Perch) as well as a deep fried soft shell crab which I think is great value. I found though that the pesto sauce was a little too mild. I think it could be better with more ground up pinenuts and a stiffer parmesan to give it more punch. 3.75/5

Panna Cotta++

Not everything is rosy though and the dessert dept needs a bit of a brush up. We tried the Panna Cotta and the Creme Brulee and all I can say is that if you are the type who is concerned about health, then the desserts here will suit you well. However, I think that most dessert lovers will go for something that is sweet and creamy so the stuff here might not make the grade for them. So I hope that they can work on this dept so that we can all finish the meal with something that is more on par with their appetizer and mains. 3/5

Conclusion

If only this place had been around when I was still dating Amagada! It would have been quite an affordable place for a romantic dinner! Great place for a set lunch too except that the interior lighting needs to be changed because it is too dim when there is bright sunshine shining through the narrow main entrance. Oh yes, and for those who like to complain about places charging for ice water, you'll be pleased to know that ice water here is not only free, it is nicely scented with slices of strawberries as well.

i had my 1st wedding anniversary dinner at absolute haven, the female boss was so sweet. She work with my hubby to create a special set menu, decorate the table with roses, had our photo taken on polaroid.

Whats more can i ask for. Support them, they are nice humble people, and serve great food for value.

Yes, I agree about the lighting for lunch. I think they should consider either installing more spotlights or just making the front entrance opaque so it is like a restaurant without windows.

no wonder i found tis place familiar.. i passed by a couple of times..

will try & can try since e location is so convenient!

i'll give my "feedback" on e portion after tat! hehe

e Yorkshire Pork Rack & Lamb Rack look super tempting!

maybe can try on monday (if i'm going)! =)

If you think it is too dim at lunch, wait til you try it for dinner. I found the place far too bright, with all the tungstun light, it's a distraction for a romantic dinner. Such a pity as other than that, I simply love the food there.

Btw Khim, it is closed on Monday :-) Another tip, please call for reservation to avoid disappointment.

A silly question... is t-shirt and jeans ok for this place?

liverpool1965 said...

i was about to ask the same question! :)

ieat said...

Should be ok since the napkins are paper.

cindy said...

hmm, where did u eat when u were dating?

ladyironchef said...

ahh.. i agreed that its pretty reasonable for a romantic dinner. Been there once and the boss was very friendly.

ifatfat: yeah i think tshirt and jeans will do for absolute haven : )

Ah, our first meal I "chia" her to a sumptuous Hor Fun at Taman Jurong. On special occasions it was Milano's and Jack's Place and on really special occasions Cairnhill Steakhouse. Can't afford that much when your NS salary was only $150 per month.

choryen said...

what Hor Fun at Taman Jurong?!where?intro intro!!!

ieat said...

Firstly it was in the old Hawker Centre there that isn't there anymore and secondly it really didn't matter what the Hor Fun tasted like when you are distracted with other more important things

Hey thanks Leslie for recommending such nice meat! I will definitely make a trip down. Have been losing lots of hair as i became vegetarian for the past three months. Telogen effluvium! I guess i can't be vegetarian.

ieat said...

Wow that is the first time I heard of that!

LOL I'm amused at the notion of napkins being made of paper, therefore can wear jeans and t-shirt! That's really new for me as a gauging standard.

BTW, I think I'll celebrate HolyBunny's bdae here~

Went there last week, tried the mushroom & pumpkin soup. Mushroom soup is just ok to us and i don't really like the taste of the pumpkin soup.

The 2 main courses are nice - pork rack & chicken roulade.

We also don't really like the desserts - crepes.

After reading so many GOOD reviews on this resturant, I just like to post my experience after visiting Absolute Haven.

Maybe my expectation is too high after reading all these very good reviews. So i m kind of dissapointed and don't think will visit them in the near future.

i've finally tried it!!

had e pumpkin & orange soup. tot e pumpkin taste rather diluted.. i can smell e orange only..

we had e lamb & yorkshire pork rack.. both were fantastically marinaded..

e marinade for lamb is slightly stronger compared to e pork.. e pork rack had a nice juicy miky flavor! i like both very much! (e fats from e lamb were oh-so-shiok - nice!!!)

but les.. e lamb chop not as generous as u said lei.. e size of each piece is just like other lamb chops i see elsewhere..

i was telling e lady (probably e sister) tat i could finish a serving of lamb rack n a serving of yorkshire pork rack myself..

then we had e creme brulee & e tiramisu.. e tiramisu could be better if it's a bit sweeter? but they were quite generous wif e alcohol in e tiramisu.. but for e creme brulee, i didn't taste or smell any alcohol even though e menu did mention tat there's grand marnier?

overall, e main course is good.. but dessert-wise, it's a bit expensive..

ieat said...

They know they need to work on the dessert dept.

Well at least you get full with only TWO main courses. Other places you probably need 3 or 4 eh khim?

jems said...

actually that's the thing, now that Les is already so famous, I am so not surprise that the restaurants who can recognize him will make extra effort in the food they serve him and or even give bigger portions.

khim said...

forgot to mention tat we went to have beancurd straight after e meal!! hehe..

ya.. i had e soup, my pork rack, don's lamb rack, (2) desserts & beancurd in total!

Holy Drummer said...

Wah rao!

So the recommended items are the pork and lamb rack(s) yeah?

The pumpkin orange soup sounds queer to me =x

Well, Les can attempt to travel incognito and masquerade, but with that cool camera snapping away LOL

just went to absolute haven last evening........

i hv to say that it was decent, but wasnt a wow for me...

had the sliced salmon and sliced prosciutto salad.. nondescript.

had the yorkshire white pig pork chops... run of the mill. the taste and seasoning did nothing for me.. bland and nothing special about it - the best i had tasted, and double the size of what they served was in HK.

i gotta say a bleah affair, wldn't go back again.

comparatively, Brown Sugar's food is outstanding. everything is well executed, portions are decent and the taste of the various items i have tried there in my 2 visits are always lively.

i just went there for lunch today. i would say it isn't very cheap. a complete meal of appetiser, entre, dessert and beverage could rough up to 40-50 per person unless you take their set meal

i had their lamb rack. it was cooked well, however it was slightly salty for me that kept lingering in my mouth.

the lady boss Phyllis is really sweet though. she offered to provide my colleague with a dessert on the house because my colleague commented that her pork was far too salty

I just had my meal at Absolute Haven yesterday. The female boss, Phyllis was really sweet and we really enjoyed the food, especially the pork and the risotto. Service standards were really personable and the ambience was quiet and friendly for either a date or double date.

A must repeat!
