Heng Carrot Cake: Something in Newton worth going for
With Cactuskit, Wahcow and Sumosumo
Judging from the comments so far, it is quite clear that many of our readers regard Newton Food Centre as a place for tourists which was my perception as well. However, I must say that Newton Food Centre actually turned out to be better than we expected. Both Cactuskit and I
haven't been back here for awhile, but we both felt that there was quite an air of expectation about the whole place. I was interested to see just how bad the touting really is, but after trying to get myself touted for awhile, I would say that the touting problem is about the same as the Satay sellers at East Coast Lagoon. This place does indeed have Singapore's greatest concentration of BBQ seafood stalls though, which I guess is so because the hawkers want to cash in on high priced items.
However it would be unfair to say that all the hawkers there are out to make a quick buck from the tourists. In fact, I think the hawkers there know that they still have to cater to the locals in order to survive, especially those that are selling the less touristy items like Seafood BBQ.
Now, if you are one of those who shun Newton Food Centre then you might just miss out on this Carrot Cake which was surprisingly quite good. They have been there since Newton Food Centre was first built in 1971 and are still steaming their own Carrot Cake because they insist that home made carrot cake still tastes better.
Their efforts are quite evident in the white version. The texture of the carrot cake was just nice. It is softer and more "wobbly" than the commercial version and you can make out the strips of radish in it. It is fried till crispy on the outside but moist and soft on the inside and was very tasty. It definitely is not the best a carrot cake can get, since they avoid the use of lard, but it is certainly one of the best ones I have tasted. The black version is also very good and they managed to fry it till it is nice can caramalized. This might be one of the rare occasions where I find that both the white and black versions are just as good. 4.25/5
Conclusion
Very good homemade Carrot Cake and though it is in Newton, they still sell it at $3 per plate which I think is quite reasonable. It is certainly one stall which I would go to Newton Food Centre for.

Have you ever tried the fried carrot cake at Bedok Interchange hawker centre. Can't recall the name of the stall, but it's the only one there - located at the corner facing the car park. You will not miss it as most patronage there will have a plate of its carrot cake.
I found the black version better although the white version is equally good. They are opened in the norming till late afternoon when it runs out. Closed on Sunday.

Sounds interesting, I will try to drop by next time!
This carrot cake stall is the only stall worth going to Newton for IMO. I've lived around there all my life and I've been eating this carrot cake since I was in school. The rest of the stalls are just not worth the time.
While you refused to write anything about the cold crabs you eaten, you come with "softer and more "wobbly" than" with carrot cake.
My question to you, how much softer?? And how much more wobblier can it get??? Carrot cake is carrot cake. It's either fantastic or it is not. If it is not, you can paint until softer, woblier, saltier, more oommp or ampere or charge or hit your onami or tsunami also like that? Still a carrot cake that is nothing special.
If you don't want to comment on the crab, then dont bother comment on this la, people will also know it is not great.
Leslie, lately your choice of review is not that great. Fresh from your japan trip, you give us the 'lao ya but si bei gui' teo chew muey, pou tong pok pia ga pou tong chai tao guay. Do have nothing better than this to write is it?
I love carrot cake...that's so nice of you to share all these delicacies with us...
Hi Anonymous,
Why don't you drop me an email suggesting something you consider great to eat and we go blog it together?
Yup, there arent many things that you can eat at Newton because they seem swamped by the numerous Cze Char Stores which hard sells at high prices.
hehe....but there are a few jems here (in fact, i cannot think of a hawker center where all the food sux)
this carrot cake at newton along with the bedok interchange one mentioned by LS in the 1st post are my favourites.
give it a try first lah !! :) yum !
I agree with the comment about fried carrot cake at Bedok Interchange hawker centre. Go in the morning when the uncle is frying. Black is the one to go for because thats what they started off with. The stall has probably been there for 20 odd years. (I eat it growing up). Some say its too sweet but just nice for me :) There's nothing about self made carrot cake to brag about but just simple good taste. Hawker centre undergoing major cleanup now. If you are interested go in a few days time. You can choose to add seafood in if you want but i am old school i prefer the traditional type.
You all know that the Bedok Interchange stall has already been blogged right?

ya not bad this stall, have tried before.
I missed the carrot cakes which I eat 40 years ago. The guy does not have a shop but the whole kitchen in on those old type of tricycle and travel around selling his food.
Fried only black, the chai poh and spicy taste just right. So shiok.
Looks good and delicious! I will be going there for dinner tonite. I will give it a try.
tried it before. really one of the better food. actually the fish soup at near the enterance of newton also worth a try.. introduce to me by my fiancee. wasn't a fish person until i tasted it.
we tried the fish soup that same day...alas he was just changing the soup....so wasnt tasty and all of us thought it shouldnt be blogged for now...
ah...maybe..i go eat the carrot cake later....moohahaha
i think bedok carrot cake is not at the top form as compared to the past.. i will try newton carrot cake soon~

I had been sick for days.. lost my taste and recover soon, everyday i visit IEat is the motivation for me to get better soon.
Once i recover, i will go eat carrot cake at this Newton Food Center with my gf :)
Thanks iEat for motivate me.
The other stall that is not too bad is the oyster omelette. Can't remember which stall but the stall has some newspaper cuttings on the front and next to a fishball stall if I remember correctly.
The rest.... yeah the usual touting BBQ seafood. Nothing to shout about. I prefer to eat my bbq seafood at Chomp Chomp
This has been my favorite carrot cake for at least 10 years..i love the black version with no chili...some days i will even have 1 plate white and 1 plate black :) I love the auntie's great patience and service too. To side track, back to the old newton, there was this chicken rice/porridge stall at the back (near a desert stall) which serves a very very good dish of baby kailan with oyster sauce and chili padi. Its no longer at the new newton, anyone know if its still around somewhere?
This carrot cake looks good! I prefer my carrot cake fried in chunks rather than it being broken up into pieces. Will give this stall a try oneday :)
u shld have tried their fried oyster too... imo, it's the best in newton - crispy and tasty =)
I like their carrot cake 2, they r very crispy! The people in the stall is a couple n they r very friendly. They closed at Tuesday, usually... =)
To my opinion, i think that their carrot cake is the best in Newton.
How about trying this stall at Blk 162 Ang Mo Kio #01-40. Black and White carrot are very tasty.
these 2 i like veri much:
1) Redhill - look for mickey mouse signboard. they also sell bak chang. quite confusing hor? again it is a corner stall!!! the chilli they use got 4-horsepower ... si-beh hiam.
2) Marine Terrace hawker center - my jc pals will kill me for saying this, but BEE BEE is the ultimate CTK ... maybe cause i grew up eating it, but the lady who fries it gets the mix just right in terms of texture, softness, sweetness and savoriness. weekends pls go early. they have been known to be sold out by noon ...
We second the second recommendation =)
WE, meaning Cactuskit and me only. We swear by Bee Bee. =)
