The Top Table: Looking for a Hang Cheng Pai Lobang?

Pan Fried Chicken Breast wrapped in Prociutto

With all the financial doom and gloom being reported in the news daily, a lot of people are making the extra effort to look for great deals. So much so that we even have a thread in the forum for people to share information on great deals called "Hang Cheng Pai Lobangs", hence the title for today's post.

For the benefit of those who don't understand the above phrase, which is a typical Singaporean fusion of Hokkien and Malay words, "Hang Cheng Pai" means "Bad Situation" in Hokkien and "Lobang" literally means a hole in Malay. But how can a "hole" help you in a bad situation and how did the word "Lobang" come to mean some sort of tip off for a great deal? One plausible explanation might be that the word for "Great Opportunity" in Hokkien is "Kang Tau" and the word "Kang" also means hole in Hokkien. So at some time in our history, rather than saying "Kang Tau", one Singaporean changed it to the Malay equivalent and a piece of Singlish history was made. Or could it be the other way round? Whatever it might be, a "Lobang" still came to signify a great opportunity which is not widely knowned except for the privileged few who have access to such information. Some people I know are like "Lobang Kings", they seem to know where to get the best deals for everything from electronics to real estate. I even know one lady who has a cut out coupon for just about anything you might want to buy!

Anyway, I am not a "Lobang King" but I came across this little lobang if you are looking for a cheap way of getting a four course upmarket meal for $12.50 with no +++. Of course there is a catch. You will be subjecting yourself as a guinea pig for trainee chefs and waiters to practise on. Now, I have never really considered a meal at any of the training institutes since I have always assumed that it would be a waste of calories. But it so happens that one of my makan kakis, Holydrummer had spent a term at the academy and he was raving about the food there. So since since people are looking for "Hang Cheng Pai Lobangs", I decided to "scope" this particular "hole" out.

Caesar Salad

The whole experience was a rather pleasant surprise. The place was modern and well decorated just like any proper restaurant and the food turned out to be really good! The lunch set changes every week and you get a choice between 2 starters and 2 mains. I started with the Caesar Salad which was as good, if not better than most Caesar salads I have eaten. The bacon was freshly fried and crisp, they used toasted homemade foccacia to replace the croutons and it was dressed with shaved Parmesan cheese, not the cheap commercial Parmesan powder that a lot of places use. The lettuce could have be colder and crispier and I think that they really should not put a green salad on a green plate. But other than that, it was a pretty nice starter. 4/5

This was followed by the Pan Fried Chicken Breast wrapped in Prosciutto. Chicken Breast is very difficult to get right since it can become dry if it is overcooked. Mine was juicy and tender and nicely spiced. Would be even better if there was a nice jus to go with it though. 4/5

Cream Caramel with Orange and Ginger foam

Usually with the budget set lunches, you get really simple cheap desserts like some jelly or a slice of peach. I always felt that this was simply a cheap scam so that they can call it a three course meal. Not here, here you get a proper dessert and, lucky me, it just happens to be creme caramel that day.... one of my favorite desserts. The orange was a nice twist I thought, but the ginger foam did not quite have any ginger taste. It served as a nice decoration though. 4/5

Caffe Latte: Extra $2.50

The set lunch does come with coffee (expresso) and tea (Lipton Tea Bag) in a nice cup and saucer served with cream (not milk) and sugar. But if you like to end your meal with something a little more special, you could order the Caffee Latte for an extra $2.50.

Conclusion

Seriously, foodwise I have eaten comparable set meals at some 5 star hotels for $35 or more. It isn't shiok enough to say it is a die die must try, but if you are really looking for a cheap place to eat pretty nice food, then it doesn't get better than this. The only thing is that the service tends to be a little amateurish as the students are understandably nervous and not as polished as seasoned waiters. Also the other patrons of the restaurants tend to be fellow students and lecturers, so the waiters tend to be a little over familiar with their customers.

I would say that this is the best value set meal I have had at $12.50 in recent memory. Don't think for a moment that you can just turn up and get a seat as they were fully booked one week in advance last week. Rumour has it that during their 2-3 month run, they would be serving stuff like Foie Gras, Duck Confit and Stewed Beef Cheeks. Holydrummer is keeping his antenna out for those and hopefully he can keep us all informed on this post.

Got other great "Hang Cheng Pai Lobangs"? Share lah!

ieat said...

Thanks for that. Have corrected the typo.

Better call up to reserve cos it is harder to get reservation here than some of the best restaurants in Singapore.

No offence to the students here working at TCA Sugarloaf, but I would like to give my feedback on your little "special greeting" which I experienced a few months back.

it goes a little something like this...

Customer walks down the stairs

One waiter intones audibly "Hi"

All students in the cafe exclaim in unison "WELCOME TO SUGARLOAF"

Of course, this would make the people walking in feel welcome, but for certain people (i.e me) if I was there eating for the past half and hour, I might find it a little irritating with the repititive lines sounding throughout the cafe. And a while later, it might sounds a little fake also at sometimes, where the students are clearly tired, but they still have to force themselves to be cheery and bright.

Of course, I know from a friend who works there that you are forced to do this...but I hope this feedback would reach the relevant teachers/superiors.

Perhaps a solution can be that the student nearest to the staircase can greet a customer when he walks in. I believe that would make him feel welcome in a quieter and pleasant way.

Back to the food of Sugarloaf.

Can I just say that Sugarloaf, for such cheap prices , with air-conditioning, comfortable seats and a panomaric view, it's simply a great place for both students and the public alike to sit back and just daydream, or engaging in light banter with friends and great company.

One memorable dish I had was the braised beef rice, where the beef was tender and the rice was warm and fragrant. The Creme Brulee was something different, with a slight bitter aftertaste and creamy egg pudding. I would go so far as to say that the food there is even better than some other cafes run by full time workers, with normal outside prices.

Hence, my thumbs up for the students in TCA, and keep up the good work.

(I know how it feels to be in the F & B industry...working in a cafe also now for my holidays)

the duck confit is one of my favourites. Top Table is definitely worth a try!

Holy bro, good point, but I think there's nothing wrong with such a thing. In the end, it's training, so even if they are tired, it's good to build character.

Look at the Japanese department stores and restaurants (ok some of them) and they have similar greetings.

the menu this week in TopTable is duck confit. come try it if you'd like =)

Thank goodness. Even a customer understands amateur students trying to perform service would of course be understandably nervous.

There'll be roast beef next week if I'm not wrong!

Next week Top table will be serving veal cheek and seafood bouillabaisse, see you there! :)

Oh-oh...

I heard that Wednesday's team got a bit of a problem serving the food... my friend's group waited and waited until they couldnt even deliver the main course - had to be pacified with a sandwich and even had to forfeit her deposit (because her group consisted of 8 people)... I wouldn't need to tell you how furious she was - I would be, too.

Hopefully, the kinks would have been ironed out by week 3 of ops.

BTW, holybro - SugarLoaf is meant to be a lively bistro, hence the greeting by all staff. It may seem intrusive to you, but fact is it does make a difference if a customer is greeted by all instaed of just one - whether genuine or otherwise, it's another question.

I look forward to the veal cheeks!

If you've a sweet tooth, the pastries and chocolates are just for you. Otherwise, there are also hot food items like Chicken Potpie, Seafood Fritata etc..just for your tastebuds.

Prices are from $ 2.00 onwards. (Cheap and good!!!)

P.S. You may wanna dine in Toptable for lunch, then have some snacks takeaway from Sugarloaf before you head back office/home..=)

I have another Hang Cheng Pai Lobang!!!

Its at Kovan, Hougang
Its a small Thai restaurant called Nakhon.
Its beside an indian "restaurant" which is on the same stretch as Superbowl.

They serve authentic thai food.
Green Curry, Black Olive Rice etc etc.
My favourite there is their Mango Sticky Rice and Thai style fried kway teow. Such starts from only $4 and are really filling.

They have sides like fish and veg and beef which is slighty more expensive. Starts from $8.

They are always full on weekends though. Good to catch on weekday afternoons.

I have no idea what is the exact location but I do have their number 62868785. Unfortunately they stopped taking reservations once their business picked up. Oh well.

Did the veal cheek and seafood bouillabaisse last Friday.

I was peeved I had to say when my gal was almost denied entry into the restaurant cuz she was in a tank top and sandals..... The student were helpful enough to help find a jacket to cover my gal up so that she can still head in to eat. I thought having such strict dress code is really kinda ridiculous.
I would definitely be very unhappy if after travelling for almost 1.5 hours and got slightly caught in the rain and I was refused admission due to this dress code thingy. It was after all a training restaurant and I think the concentration should be on the service and food and even the ambience and not impose such strict dress codes on the guests....

Crab Cake wasn't great. Review from the table wasn't good too on the Crab Cake.
The bread provided were all lovely. Even the biscotti served at the end of the meal with the coffee was much better than StarBucks heh.
Cream of Potato was light and quite tasty. Not too creamy in fact.
For the mains the veal cheek was very soft but felt that the sauce lacked that oomph. Think a lack of red wine taste, prob not marinated in red wine long enuf or something like that heh.
I enjoyed the bouillabaisse. The stock was very full of good sweet flavour and seafood fresh :)
The raspberry cake for dessert was a tad too dry though.

The student waitress/waiters were all very nervous though. They actually made me kinda nervous hah~ as if I will bite leh.
Had started working part time since secondary school and did lotsa waitressing before at various restaurants and such and never remember I was so gan cheong la keke. Relax and enjoy the job :)

Took a stroll around the campus a lil after the meal. TP has certainly expanded since I was the pioneer student at this campus heh
