The Shepherd's Pie: Do Shepherd's Eat Lambs?
Shepherd's Pie $3.90
As I was thinking about what to write about the Shepherd's pie, a funny thought struck me. - Do Shepherds eat lambs?
Presumably, the Shepherd's pie was so named because it was made by Shepherds and traditionally, they were made with lamb mince. But the thought of a Shepherd actually eating their lambs is a little unsettling. Afterall, we always hear of how the Shepherd is always there to protect the lambs from the wolves and how the Good Shepherd would leave the 99 sheep to go look for the one lost sheep. Its almost like why Chinese farmers would never eat their Ox which helps till the land.
The Shepherd's pie is one of my staples while I was studying in Australia. It is basically your meat pie, but instead of a pastry top, it is covered with mashed potatoes. If you think about it, it is like eating beef stew with mash potatoes because unlike your typical pie, there is no bottom.
There are not many places offering Shepherd's pie in Singapore. If I were to compare it with the ones I had in Australia, I'd say this one is pretty good, except that I felt the stew lacked that robust beefy flavour that we usually find in an Australian meat pie. Otherwise the mash potato was nice and smooth and the crust on top was crisp. The good thing about this type of pie is that because it is made from mash potato, it is less oily than the normal shortcrust pastry. The boss also tells me that they trim off all the excess fats from the beef, so it is actually a healthier choice compared to stuff like pizza. 4/5
Conclusion
Something different the next time you are looking for a snack perhaps?
Does anyone know if Shepherds eat lambs?

I can make a shepard's pie, am I a shepard? hehehe...
I haven't actually had any shepard's pie or meat pie in Sydney. Do you have any place to recommend?
Thanks!
Sorry for nit-picking, but your spelling of the word 'Shepherd' in your title is wrong. The spelling in your post is correct though :)
Australia has a typo too. I walked by this shop a couple of times but they had no pies on display so I thought they only take pre-bookings.
Hey how about piper's pies? I heard they were pretty good. But they've since moved from Chevron house in Raffles Place and i haven't had time to find their other branches..
You have a great blog on food - two thumbs up! xD
Hey ieat - what's with all the typos? Must having too good a time in Penang! :)

Looks Yummy
Order the beef pie on delivery, waive the delivery as i was within the east side.
The pie was still hot when it arrive, very 'mac' style of delivery with the bag.
Went down to try the single portion. However, quite disappointed with the service. Was told to wait for 10mins but after more than 20mins my pie still not ready and the person after me got his order already.
Left without eating. Guess it's faster to order from phone.
Hello Doc,
I have been reading this site for close to a year now. I am amazed by the time and effort you have put into it. I enjoy eating but i must say laziness surpasses the need for tasty food in my case. I can be as happy eating the same favourite food for 2 weeks without needing a change...haha...Appreciate your effort...keep going, Doc! :) I need your help with a pie shop and putu pering (is this the right spelling? I have been calling it tutu since young). The pie shop is at chinatown. Mom's friend usually gets if for the monthly prayer session but he doesn't know the name...i wonder why...so i have not been able to get it for mom. The tutu that i am trying to locate used to be at Taman Serasi food centre...the first shop (No. 1) operated by 2 Malay ladies. I did not manage to find them at Serangoon when i last visited. Hope you can help. :) *mindy
