Arnold's Fried Chicken: Our very own KFC?

With ijeff, taukwa, holybro, holydrummer, Cactuskit, smart, sumosumo and PK

Do you remember the days when KFC was actually Kentucky Fried Chicken and that it was a sit down meal served on plates with proper knives and forks? Those were the days when KFC was first introduced to Singapore. In fact, KFC started in Malaysia first and for a time, Singaporean pride took a beating because we always felt that we are supposed to be ahead of our Northern neighbours when it came to adopting the latest western fads, be it food, movies or TV programs.

Back then, KFC was the rage and everyone wanted to copy its 11 secret herbs and spices. People started to sell Kentucky flour which you can used to coat your chicken so that you can do your own KFC style fried chicken at home. But alas, what we all lacked at home is the pressurized deep fryer which KFC uses. KFC's success meant that local players got into the game as well and thus was born Marry Brown in Malaysia. Singapore also had its share of restaurants competing for the tasty Fried Chicken market. Most of them were foreign. I still remembered Texas Fried Chicken (known as Churches in the US), which made their brief appearance at Terminal One at Changi Airport. It was followed by a list of other fried chicken franchises, but none could come close to the popularity of KFC.

I stopped eating KFC after I came back from Thailand. Compared to Thailand, KFC Singapore is dismal. The chicken here is usually tiny and instead of being crispy, it is often damp and soft, unless you go for the crispy and spicy which for me is no longer the original 11 herbs and spices. In Thailand, when you order the original and if you fortunate to get the thigh piece (not drumstick, but the part above it), it is just juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside and it's a real treat that makes you want to scream Shiok! (or since you are in Thailand, Aroy Mak!)

I didn't realise that we have our own fast food fried chicken restaurant until my friend, Boss Ming of Nuffnang told me about this restaurant in City Plaza. I didn't even realize City Plaza existed for that matter. Honestly, this is the first time I stepped into this shopping mall which is still stuck in the 70's. It was great!

Tucked in the corner on the 2nd floor is this Fried Chicken Restaurant which also looks like it's stuck in the 70's, in the era when having a meal at KFC was a special treat which you needed to score well in your exams to eat.

Now, I am going to put Boss Ming's neck on the chopping block by telling you that he convinced me to blog this place because, in his words, "This place sells the best freak'n Fried Chicken in the world!". He went on to spell out his credentials of having eaten Fried Chicken from all over the world, blah blah blah. Now I know Boss Ming is quite a foodie, so I decided to check it out.

They serve both chicken pieces and spring chicken here and the best thing about the chicken is that it is served piping hot and it is fresh. It's crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside and the pieces are not emaciated like KFC's. However, I felt that the seasoning still could not match up to the 11 herbs and spices and that KFC Thailand still serves a meaner fried chicken.

Notwithstanding, if you are after a good fried chicken in Singapore, this might be the place to go and at the same time you can take the opportunity to educate your children about what it was like growing up in the 70's. 4.25/5

Conclusion

Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, the fried chicken was well executed but the taste just lacks that ooomph to give it top marks. If they had the 11 herbs and spices, then it would have been a truly great fried chicken treat.

Agree that the seasoning for KFC's Original Fried Chicken is still better than Arnold's Fried Chicken. Arnold's seasoning is pretty good and more peppery. Their skin is also more crispy and dry as compared to KFC's Original, while the meat is still juicy. According to Arnold's website, the spring chickens are delivered fresh to the store daily and are cooked only when orders are placed. Overall, it is worth trying and I will give it a rating of 4.25/5 too.

ieat, your forgot to add sumo to your list of makan kakis

ieat said...

So I did! Thanks for reminding me, have just added him.

I wonder how many fans of this fried chicken there are out there?

besides arnold....still got waffletown at balmoral plaza...you also can eat with fork and knife on a plate there...mooohahahahah

texas fried chicken ??...i remember Big Bird....was quite amused by the "chicken" walking around handling out pamphlets and ballons....

ieat said...

Oh yes, I heard of Waffletown. I never thought it was a Fried Chicken joint. Is it a franchise or Singapore owned?

Speaking of Singapore owned fast food chains, are there any others besides this and Superdog?

How does Arnold's campare to Popeyes? IMO, Popeyes is better than KFC in Singapore.

Oh no...!!! now the queue is going to grow even longer... should try the Indonesian Es'Teler (spelling may be wrong) food and dessert outside the complex

Btw,thanks for alot of your recommendation!Cos of you I'm spoiled for choice in terms of food now! :)

I tried Popeye before, but I still feel KFC Thailand is better. I don't know what is wrong with the Singapore operation. They are not up to the standards of other countries.

KFC Singapore, together with Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, officially becomes subsidiary of KFC (Malaysia) Holdings Bhd in 2002. But it was already not great when it was under local management.

Popeye is quite good...better, IMHO than any KFC in Singapore. I just had lunch there today. The batter is crispy, crunchy, the chicken inside is tender and super juicy.

Will go try Arnold's soon.

But the best Fried Chicken I ever ate is at Babe's Chicken Dinner House at Roanoake, Texas. http://www.babeschicken.com/Babes-Roanoke-Menu.html

Only two mains are on the menu...chicken fried chicken or chicken fried steak. The former is fried chicken like we know it, except the chicken is so big, it looks like a turkey...but super tender, super juicy, and super crispy. The latter is actually a piece of beef steak, deep fried in the same batter.

I have this weird way of eating KFC, which I found to be awesome.

First you strip the meat and skin of the chicken off the bones and dump them all into a pot of large whipped potato. Next you stuff a small pack of fries into the same pot. A satchel of chili sauce, homogenise, and you get a delicious baby-food chicken potato porridge. I've been doing it since I was a small kid.

Any way, Texas Chicken used to have a branch at Holland Village when I was 5-8 years old.

Popeyes is lousy. It's in every way inferior to KFC.

Leslie, all over the world, KFC is good except Singapore. I've travelled to many countries and found their version to be bigger, juicier, more pang, more oily and just FINGER LICKING FOOD!

Singapore version were introduced somewhere in the 90s when they decided to remove certain 'beefy' ingredients from it. It was reported in the newspaper. Even the mashed potato's gravy here is different from the rest of the world.

We have quite limited choice for fried chicken actually. If you've ever been to London, you'll find all kind of fastfood fried chicken chains along the streets of London and I had made it a point to taste every single brand I come across and I found they all have very unique taste of their own. Definitely good enough to take on our very own KFC. My fav in London is called 'The Southern Fried Chicken' and in America, my fav is Jack In The Box.

alamak.....its Big Rooster ! i remember now. mooohhshahaha

anyway, whenever i feel homesick...i will go to KFC or Macs....the taste almost the same anywhere....almost like home....

Blur Ting said...

I had seen the place but never stepped in to try. I find KFC chicken pieces, especially the original version, have too much of a 'chickeny' smell. That smell is stronger in the drumstick (maybe from the veins). I prefer the spicy one cos it is better at masking the smell.

Ah yes, Arnold's is good. An old friend of mine brought me there some years ago. We also had the ice-cream ice kacang there after the fried chicken meal. The dessert was huge, not too bad but of cos it can't compare to the really good dessert stalls recommended by the foodies here.
My Malay friends love Arnold's! :) Hence comes my word of caution; do not go to Arnold's in the evenings during the Hari Raya/fasting month, because it'll be super difficult to find a space, since a lot of the Malays break fast there. And needless to say, becos of the overwhelming crowd, the quality also drops. My groups of (mainly Muslim) friends and I did that once when we went for our yearly Hari Raya shopping in Geylang Serai and we swore to never do it again! (Go to Arnold's in that period I mean.) haha.
Les, I've not tried KFC in Thailand before. (I rarely eat at fast food joints when I travel. I always think there's much nicer local food.) But since u, who've lived there, say so, sounds like the next time I go there I should have to try it. :)

Anonymous said...

Ping, you damn funny. 50% of your post describes your "Arnold chicken during Hari Raya". And then 20% of it describe "Ice Kachang". You sound like an Ice Kachang Seller in Geylang Serai who are trying to 'steal' some business off Arnold chicken during Hari Raya period!! LOLOL!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Have been patronizing Arnold's chicken since around 8 yrs ago. Really love their tasty chicken. No doubt it's way better than any of the fastfood restaurants here. And agree with everyone that KFC here is crap. Doesn't even come close to the KFC of the other countries. Specially the gravy

ieat said...

I hope someone at KFC is listening! I feel we should lead a crusade for better KFC in Singapore!

Anyway Ping is not an ice kachang seller. She's one of our kakis. Part time Kopi girl perhaps but no ice kachang seller.

1. Australia - The chicken melts in my mouth. The fries big and long. Whipped potato very smooth.

2. Malaysia - The chicken smells great. The bun have great aroma. a few chilli bottles for you to choose. value for money.

3. Thailand - Nice spicy chrispy chicken. Yummy.

4. Indonesia - Chicken abit dark. maybe be oil reuse and reuse.

5. Singapore - Depends on which outlet you go. Been to Marina square outlet the cashier service excellent. Chicken very hard feel as if eating a rock. QC poor. Best get it when is justed cooked.

Arnold's is DA BOMB man!!! I can't believe you only just found out about them! :P This is one fried chicken I don't mind chocking up calories on. I eat every bit, skin and all. At most I just trim off some blubbery fats. Fwah, it is the best and I think better than Popeye's too. The latter tends to be a bit dry as compared to Arnold's juicy chicken meat. I find their coleslaw fresh and tasty - no rancid, sourish milky taste you find in a lot of western food coleslaws. Btw ieat, they have an express outlet at White Sands in Pasir Ris.

fatme said...

Have eaten there few times but last 2 times I ate it tasted more of a maggie seasoning and salty.

On the topic of KFC Thailand - in 2005, I was transiting at BKK Don Muang airport en route from Europe and I was so sick of the airplane food (not going to mention which airline).

So while awaiting turnover, I managed to find myself being led, whiff by whiff, sniff by sniff to the aromas of KFC's fried chicken at their transit lounge outlet. And I have to say, their KFC totally kicks ass as compared to here.

Not just their original version are nice, even their spicy drumlets is real tom-yam spice and they kill! Just like the transvestite who served me (only my chicken, just in case). I din realise until he/she spoke! LOL tt's the land of a thousand smiles for you.

The chicken was such an uplifting respite from a 18-hour flight that I da-paoed 4 huge pieces to have back to SG. My teammate couldnt resist either. First time I rejected airplane food in my travel.

As for Arnold's, I like it that it's piping hot and fresh out of the oil. Super juicy and I love the seasoning they use. Not overly jerlat like KFC's hot and crispy.

Popeye's? Okay lah not much diff with KFC imho, but service quite blah... Their 'biscuits' are solid rock muffins. Crap.

Leslie, is true, Thailand KFC is better, whenever I'm in Thailand, I will definetly eat KFC once and btw, malaysia (K.L) KFC is also better in Singapore....overall....I don't like SG KFC cos it has a smell (frozen/not fresh???)....do u all feel that?

I think the problem with Singapore KFC lies in the quality of the chicken they use. They use very small chickens and also not the best quality.

Also there is something wrong with the cooking process such that the original recipe comes out soggy and oily rather than crisp.

I think I only ate at KFC once or twice in the last 5 years after I came back from Thailand. Not worth wasting the calories.

Which is why I was kind of hoping Arnold's could fill that gap. But with Arnold's the process and chicken is good, but the seasoning could be just that bit better.

sumosumo said...

my rating for arnolds was 3.75.

anything that comes out hot, crispy and fried tends to taste good. but other than that, no fragrance of herbs or spices.

Michelle - yes, the smell! I cannot stand the smell when i bite into KFC chicken drumstick. It makes me gag.

I certainly enjoyed the Armold's Chicken lunch we had the other day with the kakis. I think my kids will go nuts after trying it. They both think that KFC Singapore is Michelin Star grade.

I don't like local KFC because of its dampness and the synthetic texture of the chicken meat. If cloned meat were to be a reality, this would probably fit the bill.

Wahcow, I remember Big Rooster too. They had one in the complex beside Katong Shopping Centre. Popeyes was near the Red House bakery along East Coast Rd. Those were the days. Saved like crazy to eat there in primary school. : )

In my & all my friends opinion, Arnolds Chicken is the best fried chicken in Singapore. My rating is 4.8/5. I frequent the City Plaza outlet & it's always filled by long queues. But, trust me, the Q is really worthwhile & I'm a regulars of Arnolds. I usually order the 2 pc meal with comes with fries & coleslaw. I'm a potatoes craze & I must admit that the fries here were really great. N, it taste exceptionally well with the chilli. The colesaw taste is also just right. Not to tacid & it's always fresh. For the chickens, it's ultra crispy on the outside & super juicy on the inside. Food are always piping hot & quite fast too. You can feel the juice dripping once you bite on it. Which is actually my fav. For KFC chicken, you can rarely find such juicy chickens anymore.

For those who rave about M'sia chicken, Arnolds Chicken will be able to satisy your craze instead of getting into the hassle to cross the border.

I eat popeye's chicken now.

I stopped eating KFC for 1 yr plus. The chicken size of KFC has become so incredibly big, i realised i need to eat 6 pcs chicken in order to feel full.

The last time i ate zinger, the chicken patty is so huge that i had to lift up the bun in order to see the whole chunk of it. i next showed it to my friends and they laughed at the huge size of the chicken patty. I guess i'm the luckiest man alive on htat day.

It isn’t often that I hear people suggest that there is an eatery that serves better fried chicken than the ubiquitous KFC and the definitely-better-than-KFC Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits (now also located at the Singapore Flyer in addition to Changi Airport). And when it does happen, it would perhaps be time to dedicate some attention to the eatery. However, after dining at Arnold’s Fried Chicken last Sunday night (June 8 2008), I discovered that my opinions on the food there are diametrically opposed with those found here: (http://www.hungrygowhere.com/singapore/arnold_s_fried_chicken/).

Being the food lover that I have always been, I made my trip down to City Plaza, which is near Paya Lebar MRT Station – with the specific aim of wanting to ascertain the many positive claims made by netizens about Arnold’s Fried Chicken. I took approximately an hour to travel from my home to City Plaza, but what’s 1 hour if there’s heavenly food as reward? Surprisingly though, I left Arnold’s Fried Chicken feeling wholly dissatisfied and severely pissed off by the stupidity of the many netizens (refer to the link above).

Recommended are the Half Spring Chicken Meal and the so-called ‘must-try’ coleslaw, so I ordered just that – the Half Spring Chicken Meal, which included fries and coleslaw, but excluded drinks. Arnold’s Fried Chicken supposedly fries the chicken only when a customer orders it, so I needed to wait for about 5 minutes before my meal arrived. During the 5 minutes, I was looking at the many other patrons eating their chicken – you know, so that I know what to expect. While some were literally guzzling down their chickens, some sank their mouths into their chickens in somewhat measured mouthfuls – and there were palpable looks of awesomeness on their faces. Aha! My Half Spring Chicken meal finally arrived.

And I took my first bite. I allowed the chicken to move around the interior of my mouth – this, so that my tongue can have some time to lick up the spices and juice of the meat. But alas, there was none. I found myself chewing on some tasteless pieces of chicken – as bland as paper. Perhaps more noteworthy is the skin of the chicken, which I found to be appropriately marinated with the right spices – it was also extra crispy! But that’s about it. The meat was simply disappointing. Arnold’s Fried Chicken thrives on some people’s stupidity – the unfathomable inability to tell the difference between hot food and tasteless food. You see, Arnold’s Fried Chicken is simply using the hotness of its ‘fried-only-after-it-has-been-ordered’ chicken to mask the blandness of the meat. Arnold’s Fried Chicken can deceive goons, but a goon I am not, so here’s my valedictory verdict on its chicken: It’s mediocre, and it’s just a food centre’s Western Food Stall’s fried chicken in disguise at best.

Its fries are hopeless chunks of nonsense and while its coleslaw is really good, it still doesn’t justify a trip down to Arnold’s Fried Chicken. I can get coleslaw which is just as good at some of the food centres in Singapore. I would rate the fried chicken served by Arnold’s Fried Chicken 4th after the most delicious fried chicken in Singapore from Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits, followed by McDonald’s McWings in 2nd position, and KFC’s fried Chicken in 3rd position. I would advise Arnold’s Fried Chicken against opening any more outlet because it’s just isn’t there yet.

Disagree or agree with my views?

fatme said...

Seriously, people, the best fried chicken is not fried chicken. Go to a reputable zhi char place, maybe say Zhengfa live seafood (just an example), and order the crispy roasted chicken. Those taste far better than any fried chicken around.

Now even better would be roast pigeons from HK, or even the roast duck from the Chinese restaurant at hotel Rendevous. Had the duck during my friend's wedding dinner and it was the most fantastic poultry dish I've ever had in my life. And I used to hate duck.

It is true that KFC Singapore sucks for original flavour, and I suspect Zinger became tiny after the student meals were introduced. But since I get to eat the student meals for 3.95, I'm not complaining.

I'm not too particular, and to me KFC, Popeyes, coffeshop western food... fried chicken, as long as piping hot and crispy, is good enough for me.

Anyway, with all the comments about the chicken that KFC Singapore uses, it might interest some of you to know that they use chicken meat from Brazil.

Seems to me that for fried chicken only KFC, Popeye and Arnolds are mentioned. Any other fried chicken in Singapore worth mentioning? I reckon there is room for another one or two fried chicken restaurants!

I tried Arnolds 2x based on the recommendation of various food critic websites. The 1st time i tried - not as awesome as i expected. Decided to try another time - still the same..nothing to shout abt. basically the standard is slightly above average. Still prefer Popeye. My verdict on various fried chicken chain. KFC : overall standard is lousy. small, dry and some outlets the chicken ar tasteless(orginal) Popeye : Overall the standard ar quite good. Chicken ar tasty enough. sides ar good. A good overall package. Arnolds : Chicken skin crispy. The meat ermm not much flavour i think. A bit ex actually. The sides they gave me are pathetic. I can count the number of fries i hav. overall still ok. Mac : surprisingly, the mc wings ar actually quite tasty. I think it is becos of the small size, it is able to marinate better. But i dont really consider it under fried chicken, cos they only hav chicken wings.

So how come KFC still manages to be so popular despite the fact that their Singapore operations are so lacklustre compared to the neighbouring countries?

laundrygirl said...

ieat: in reply to your question on whether there are any other fried chicken restaurants worthy of mention, there is one at Clementi central, in a coffeeshop called "Vari Nice". It has an English name but its more popularly known as "Ke Ai Ji" (literally, Cute Chicken). They have both fried and bbq chicken. Most of the time the fried chicken is pretty decent - no rancid old oil smell, chicken is plump, juicy and tasty. If I recall correctly, 1 spring chicken is abt 9 or 10 dollars. They have the usual chicken chops and cutlets too, priced abt 4-5 bucks. It's very popular among Clementi residents, and for some reason, NUS students (at least, the NUS students from my church love it).

And I think KFC continues to be popular because they have so many outlets, making them easily accessible esp when you want a quick fried chicken fix.

ieat said...

Concerning the dismal state of KFC, I really feel that Singaporeans are being shortchanged. I for one would like to see the standards of KFC rise up to the level of our neighbouring countries. I am in no way advocating eating more fried chicken since it is not the healthiest food around. But its just the fact that KFC here is subjecting Singaporeans to an inferior quality product that irks me.

I have already written to the KFC feedback to let them read of our feedback. To date there is no response. Perhaps if you all also feel as I do that we want to see better KFC in Singapore, you all can also write in and let them know what is being commented here on this post?

In Singapore, compared to countries such as America and Australia, I think we don't eat as much. The portions of food there were huge, and I don't honestly think anyone would have been able to finish it.
But yeah, the KFC in other countries are generally better than those in Singapore. People in Singapore usually go there to eat because it is cheap, fast, and convenient.

ieat said...

Ah just when I thought KFC was so high and mighty that they would not respond to an email feedback, I got a email from them saying that they are taking note of the comments here. So at least someone is now reading.

So here is your chance to let them know that we want to have better KFC in Singapore. At least the same as the ones in our neighbouring countries if not even better then them! Ask all your friends who feel the same way to write in!

koreanlove said...

KFC is popular simply cos they have many outlets. so if anyone needs their fried chicken fix, they will just head down to the nearest outlet. KFC is not up to standard but still edible. i guess that explains why.

Anonymous said...

Went there some days ago, ordered a 3 person set meal. Our immediate impression was that of street food trying too hard to passing off as restaurant fare, taking its price points as the reference. The price is comparable to KFC but not taste wise, as far as I'm concerned. The flavour offered by Arnold's just ain't complex enough to satisfy. IMO, it's nothing more than overpriced hawker food trying to upmarket itself. I think it needs more than just situating itself in an airconditioned shopping centre, having some sort of a delivery service and matching uniforms. No point with the frills if the food's street food standard (I like street food by the way) at restaurant prices.

tj han said...

I was abducted by my girlfriend into shopping at City Plaza, which is far far away from my house. But it has all the clothing wholesalers, hence the 70s look. And I completely forgot Arnolds was there, until I saw it and got real excited that I could finally try it. The queue was long and the place was packed.

I ordered the 5 piece chicken meal. Bad move. It was too much for two people, despite what they said.

First I must say that the person who called everyone a goon is actually right. The chicken is a scam, and basically it tastes nice for the first 5 minutes due to the temperature and crispiness. By the time I got to my 3rd piece, it was rather cool and probably worse than any hawker stall.

The juicy parts were only the thigh, wings and drumstick. The breast meat was really dry and I didn't finish mine. Though I must say no fried chicken I've ever eaten has cooked breast meat well, it's just not a suitable part for it. Breast is so much better served grilled.

The fries were average, I didn't get any coleslaw as I switched it for whipped potato, which was average. The bandung was nice.

So yeah, I don't understand how Arnold's can be so popular, when it actually costs quite a lot. 21 bucks for 5 piece chicken meal! And wasn't good either.

This incident happened a fews month back, but yesterday it happens to us at Bedok Reservoir Road blk 631 newly open Malay Seafood Restaurant. We order 2 plates of Nasi Goreng, 1 Plate of Mee Hoon Goreng plus 2 can of soft drinks. 2hrs later we order another 3 cans of soft drinks. At a later stage, we thought have order some fingers food to continue our discussion, we order a plate of fried squids in fritters. When the squid was served, we were all surprise that the plate only contain 1 tiny little squid which is countable at sight. When bill was called, they charge us this plate of squid for SGD6.00. Do you're think we are over-charged? In normal practise for a SGD6.00 we can purchase either 1/2 kg or even 1kg of squids in the wet market. or order 1 big squid at those Indian Rozak stall cost us only SGD 2.00 a pc. So base on this type of bad business ethics, do you think this is acceptable even not in Newton Food centre? Moreover we look to the restaurant as foreigners. Cause my hubby and the other brother are foreigners.

Yes, I think it must be very frustrating for you.

However, putting it into this thread might not get the exposure that you want in order to warn others of this stall since it is unrelated to Arnold's.

Perhaps it is better to put your comments in the forum under its own thread?
