Wang Ji Fried Tau Kwa: Only one in Singapore?

With Taukwa and Cactuskit

Do you all remember "The Count?" from Sesame Street? They call him "The Count" because he loves to count things.

Now, guess why Taukwa is called Taukwa? Well, it is not a trick question. He is called Taukwa because he loves to eat Taukwa. And so this stall which sells fried Taukwa (the only one of its kind as far as we know) literally has got his name on it.

How anyone can be so enamoured with a block of Beancurd simply fried till it is crisp on the outside and eaten with a simple chilli sauce is something of a conandrum. If this was Tauhu Goreng (The Malay version which is served with a spicy sweet peanut sauce), at least I can understand. But this stall simply pan fries Taukwa and sells it. It seems like something any person can do right? And the Taukwa is not any special handmade from organic soy beans type Taukwa. It is simply Taukwa which you can buy at a fraction of the price at the wet market next door. But then again, people do buy Milo from the Kopi Tiam too when they can simply do it themselves at home.

Anyway, the Taukwa is very nice. I guess if you are a Taukwa lover, this has got to be one of those places which you will need to do a pilgrimage to. I like Taukwa but not so much as to drive all the way to Redhill simply to eat it. But it is good enough to order if I were eating something else there. 4/5

Conclusion

Taukwa is nice and healthy. It has got no cholesterol and it's full of protein. Eat more Taukwa, it is good for you.

Your "Taukwas" are all in caps... truly a post dedicated to Taukwa. I suppose it's the homemade chili that makes this humble taukwa delicious.

err just to be sure, would eating too much taukwas result in kidney stones?

While the chilli sauce is nice, especially with the added minced garlic, it is really the nicely fried taukwa that caught me. The pan fried exterior is fried till brown and nice while the insides are soft and juicy.

Oh my! Kidney stones? I seriously hope not.

Even though after a full meal at the Redhill food centre, I always try to eat some taukwa from this stall because they are simply delicious, esp with the piquant sauce. Also, to support this stall as it is perhaps one of a kind in Singapore. So thanks for posting it!

If I'm not wrong. There's an apparent sad story to the orginal stall owner and his family. Does anyone out there knows about it?

Isn't taukwa just soy protein? Why would it cause kidney stone? Maybe if you eat like a buckefull, the calcium will precipitate. Speaking of which, it is no myth that spinach when overeaten causes calcium oxalate to form in your bladder, isn't it?

this looks strangely attractive... must make a trip down man

When I write "With Taukwa and Cactuskit" it means that I have been joined by Taukwa and Cactuskit. If I say this review was done by Cactuskit and Taukwa, it means that they went and this was their review. I have only ever done this once I think.

I hope that clears it up for you.

I like Taukwas too! In fact, I love almost all forms of tofu. ieat can correct me if I am wrong but according to my knowledge, kidney stones only result if you consume in excess, in this case, dietary calcium, so much so that your kidneys are unable to excrete the excess calcium. However, it is also a known fact that singaporeans in general do not consume sufficient dietary calcium. So I think, chances are, that extra plate of fried taukwa will not result in calcium stones forming in your kidneys.
Conclusion: taukwas' a good source of dietary calcium, low in cholesterol (except if you eat a lot of FRIED taukwas soak in vegetable oils). Eat in moderation.

Aiyah what a waste!

Was there this afternoon. But din know about this stall.

Closer to the East, Was having lunch on Sunday @ Seng Kee Bak Chor Mee along Changi Road.

Had "Jia Xiang Tou Gan" (loosely translated as 'Homestyle' Taukwa). Essentially a dish of nice silky smooth taukwa topped with minced meat.

Only $3 and very satisfying.

I am a taukwa fan too and I usually only eat the one my mum buys from this very old man who comes to the market near my house in his pick up full of taukwas... And I think he has the BEST and FRESHIEST taukwa one ever taste. I usually fry and eat with Del Monte Kechup, or I put marinated mince meat in between them and fry them. It can become a meal on it's own. Yum Yum.. ;)

I was at Redhill Food Centre recently and saw a queue of about 5 people at the Taukwa stall and it was 3pm! You are right it was only fried taukwa with chillie sauce. Why would people queue for that? Must be the chillie sauce.

Taukwa is great! Panfried and eaten with some garlic chilli, just the way it should be!! I love this stall but too bad it's quite a distance away from where I live.

scs butter posted ( If I'm not wrong. There's an apparent sad story to the orginal stall owner )

I believe you must be staying around redhill, and you must be around middle age group. Because it's true that very sad story happened to this family more than 20 years ago. But please don't bring out again.

The Zion Road FC stall sells taukwa pao with some deep fried taukwa. Very different. While at Zion Road, should also try the Lor Mee at the coffee shop at the corner opposite the FC. Very traditional Lor Mee and good Sesame Sauce noodles.

My mother-in-law used to snack on fried taukwa. Now I fry the taukwa and eat it with Sinsin garlic chilli sauce whenever I don't feel like having dinner.

My mum always fry Taukwa and we eat it with soysauce and her home-made chilli too! YUMMY!!

This is similar to what is found in Hong Kong for many years. One of my favorite snack out whenever I visit Sum Shui Po!

When I searched for Redhill Food Center map online, I was showed 1001A Jalan Bukit Merah.

Rather, this recommended stall's location is at Redhill Lane Block 79 Market.

My dad's a tau kwa lover so decided to drop by. Even though it was packed home [a little heating in the microwave didn't harm the texture or taste], he gives the thumbs up to this stall.

Oh, the chilli's a good complement.

The exact address is Blk 85 Redhill Lane #01-61
Redhill Hawker Centre. Blk 79 is the wet market. By the way there are alot more nice food in this hawker centre which didn't mention in this forum. Example is the Seng Heng Loh Duck, Wah Kee Chicken Rice, Teochew Porridge (beside the Satay Bee Hoon) and more.......
Enjoy during your next visit

Had to try it after reading your posting and Tau Kwa's recommendation and it did not fail.

Had 2 pieces of tau kwa with a ngor hiang. All were extremely delicious and the chilli sauce that accompanied really complemented the two items - sweet, sourish.

Not forgetting the minced garlic sauce which you have to add to the chilli sauce. Damn shiok!
