Hajjah Meriam Family Stall: Has Anyone tried this Kentang Ball?

Now this is a novel dish. I have never eaten this before so I don't have a gold standard to compare it to. Maybe our readers can shed a bit of light on where the really good ones are?

Anyway, the dish consists of mashed potato about the size of a cricket ball filled with minced beef inside. The whole thing is deep fried in a batter and then served in a bowl of spicy chicken soup.

Something new for me. The taste of the dish is pretty predictable. Imagine eating mashed potato and minced beef and essentially you have it. Certainly worth a try if you haven't had it before. 4/5

After my recent disappointment with the famous Roti John at Serangoon Way FC, I was understandably apprehensive about Roti John, not wanting to have to grieve all over again so soon after my last tragedy. But thankfully, my faith in the good old Roti John has been restored by the one served here.

The crust was toasted till it was light and crispy and the savoury minced mutton in the omelette was adequately spiced and delicious. They also serve it was a great homemade sweet chilli sauce. 4.25/5

Conclusion

Always delighted to try something new, but I don't really have a craving for the Kentang Ball anytime soon. The Roti John is definitely one of the better ones around.

Shukor Stall: On the Makansutra Legend trail

Save as Draft

I was planning for a long time to try this legendary Roti John which used to be from Taman Serasi. This is arguably the most famous Roti John stall as it is one of the Makansutra Legends. However, on that fateful afternoon, I found out that the famous lady who was responsible for the fame of the Roti John only runs the stall on weekends. As a result (I guess) the dish we got was a little lack lustre. It was ok, but tasted like any other Roti John. 3.5/5

Conclusion

I am only blogging this since it is famous. Perhaps those who have had the Roti John here can attest to its quality on weekends?

Ibrahim Mee Stall: Roti John that's soft on the inside, crispy on the outside

With smart, liverpool1965, tamago and iwatch_ueat

Forget what the stall sign says about this being a mee stall. Go straight for the Roti John and you will, as William Hung said, have no regrets! The Roti John is the best one I have had for years. The secret is in the use of a really nice soft bun instead of the usual french loaf. The skin only turns crispy when they toast it in wok after they fry the side with the egg. What you get is a crispy rather then chewy crust and soft, melt in your mouth bread which has absorbed the flavours of the egg, margarine and spicy mutton. They also serve with with a killer sweet chilli sauce which they prepare themselves!! Until I taste the ex-Taman Serasi one recommended by smart, this is my current favourite Roti John in Singapore! 4.25/5

We were less impressed with the mee goreng however. It was good but not exceptional. 3/5

Conclusion

Go for the Roti John!
