Hoe Kee Porridge: Perfect Porridge Anytime! Maxwell Food Centre Part 5 of 8
With smart, SurprisePocket, jezzz and iwatch_ueat
Hoe Kee has been rapidly expanding their stalls in the last few years. I am very apprehensive about the quality of food at big operators such as Hoe Kee. But SurprisePocket insisted that they were better than Zeng Zeng's (which is usually sold out by lunch anyway).
This handmade tofu looked too irresistible so we had to try it first. A simple dish, the tofu I suspect is made from soya bean milk and egg, steamed like a chawanmushi then deep fried. Add some shallots, spring onions and chilli and drench it in a soy sauce based gravy..... heavenly delight! 4/5
It is hard to take an interesting picture of porridge. So I decided to take a picture of the porridge after we stirred it up a bit. For $3 a bowl, I am sure you will agree that the amount of century eggs is generous!! The porridge was smooth and very tasty! It was seriously very very good. One day I must try the Zhen Zhen one to compare, cos I really don't know how much better Century Egg porridge can get. 4.5/5
I was amazed to see this machine with a huge tap head at the bottom. It is used for boiling the porridge of course!
Conclusion
The great thing about this place is that they are almost always opened! Currently the best (and most value for money) Century Egg Porridge in my books.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Hoe Kee's Lean meat and century egg porridge!
Coming from a Hongkong kid who grew up eating 'zhok' everyday - this is really GOOD stuff.
Most 'zhok' stalls just threw in maybe 6-7 slices of century egg, but at this place, you get really hearty chunks of it! Moreover, the 'zhok' is thick, tasty and oh-so-smooth!
Perfect supper!

I tried the century egg porridge this morning. There was not so much egg like the one shown in picture by Leslie. It was not salty. Not much msg too. However, the porridge which my mil ordered was so salty, she said. May be they miss the say sauce in my bowl and went to hers instead! We ordered 2 plates of raw fish. One was v salty than another. I think they missed one again.
I prefer Hoe Kee to Zheng Zheng. The porridge at Zheng Zheng is way to busy. I love Hong Kong style porridge and Hoe Kee is consistently good. The texture of their porridge is wonderful with lots of meats or whatever you've ordered with it. Don't forget the tofu or yu sheng, which are also good. You have the option to put in your own fried shallots. Hoe Kee is THE place to go to cure any hangover and get the comfort food you need in a crunch. If you like frog porridge, nothing beats Eminent frog porridge in Geylang.
We went there for lunch last month. There were only 2 guys manning the stall. One mainland Chinese guy cooked. Another one took the order. and oh boy, how he messed up all our orders and swore at customers instead. Adding to the unpleasant encounter, the pig organs in my porridge were all uncooked. There's still blood all over the porridge. That night I had bad tummy ache. I have always liked their porridge. But now, I'm not sure if I wanna go back there again.
When I tried it some 2 weeks back, me and my partner felt that the porridge was way too salty. We couldnt finish our food :)
I just had the century egg porridge from here last month. The stall looked very empty so I thought I might be picking the wrong one to try out.
But it was amazing! There was enough century egg to last me through the whole bowl, and I'm also glad to say it's the first time I ever finished a bowl of cantonese porridge completely without having that jelat feeling.
