Le Wai Tian: The KL Hokkien Mee Hunt

It's been a few years since I had the KL Hokkien Mee in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur and I am still thinking about it! It's just one of those life defining moments for me. The crispy pork lard was so good, the savory flavor literally explodes in your mouth synergizing perfectly with that gravy to leave a wonderful taste sensation on your palate while the aroma slowly wafts up your nostrils. Mmmmm.... I can still remember it today.

I have been looking for a decent plate of KL Hokkien Mee in Singapore, but have so far been disappointed. Somehow, no one here seems to realize that there is a real good food opportunity here that is still left unchallenged?

Anyway, I am on a renewed quest to look for the best KL Hokkien Mee in Singapore. There have been very few leads so far. This stall is famous more for the Fish Head Steamboat than the KL Hokkien Mee per se, but it was close to home and I was desperate so it was shot in the dark. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually not bad! OK, it is still far from the ultimate KL Hokkien Mee, but the sauce was thick and savory and pork lard is decent (before you get carried away, I did not eat that many, I merely savor the one or two....or three). 4/5

Conclusion

Not a bad KL Hokkien Mee. It managed to satisfy the craving. But now the gauntlet is cast. Who can recommend the best KL Hokkien Mee in Singapore? Or do we have to instigate some Cze Char Hawker to introducing a die-die-must-try one?

mmm...this is one hunt i'll be hoping you can find the ultimate petaling street-like hokkien mee in SG...

just a little more info:
the Stall name for the KL hokkien mee at jalan petaling/petaling street is called Jin Lian Ji (golden lotus 'Ji').
In fact there are 2 different stalls with the same name along the street and both's hokkien mee are almost similar...

A pic for those who are already imagining how does it look like, took these 2 years ago:

Phwa, those are the pics I was looking to download but I could not find them! Well done! Your Dad's beef kway teow is really great. Still the best dry version around! Hoping someone will recommend us a Hokkien Mee at least 3/4 as good as the one at Jin Lian Ji

pammiez, sorry off hand got no cheesecake to recommend. The best one I ate was from a NY chef but he only does it for private functions now.

Anonymous, thanks! Sounds good! I will head down there. It would be good if you had a pen name so I can acknowledge your recommendation (if it is really that good of course!)

Believe it or not, pine tree club's cafe used to serve AWESOME KL hokkien mee! they hired a malaysian chef and had great malaysian cuisine.

but they changed their head chef and took all the authentic malaysian food off their menu ):

I thot the best KL hokkien mee is not at Petaling Street but rather at a side lane off the mainroad towards Pudu/Bukit Bintang. It opens only at about 8pm after the traffic jam. You can find cars (big cars) parking at the roadside buying the hokkien mee, even at the risk of being fined by mata mata! It's open th 2 to 3 am in the morning.

Hi Pammiez

You could give the cheesecakes at the Hilton Hotel a go. Not the cheapest in town but very flavourful and refined in taste.

You can try the Blueberry Cheesecake at My Secret Garden at Waterloo Arts Centre opposite Fortune Centre.

Light and not too cheesey...

Cheesecakes?

I think there's someplace called The Golden Copenhagen @ Hilton - I hope ibinge is talking about tt one, no?

I prefer my wifey's cheescakes, oreo cheesecake, durian cheesecake and blueberry cheesecake. Done to my palate, light and not cheesey. Don't need to eat out for cheesecake.

Holy drummer,

what is this golden copenhagen? I just get my cake from the cake shop in the lobby. Is this the place you are thinking about?

I won't say the best but I find it pretty good and I do crave it. I like the dark hokkien mee at Sin Hoi Sai, Tiong Bahru, blk 55. Any relation to the East Coast Sin Hoi Sai? And I notice you, like many others, refers to it as Sin Hoi San (see post on 3d photos).

My Mum's Place (Joo Chiat) is supposed to have very good hokkien mee. It is good but I had it quite a long time back.

I grew up eating the Hokkien mee from a restaurant in Zion Road area that has since closed down. I've not been extremely adventurous to try this dish at normal tze char store and to date, the best I've eaten in Sgp so far is the Hokkien restaurant called Beng Thin Hoon Kee at OCBC Building in Chulia Street. As of the last time I went (in Jan 07) it still tastes as great. Here's a preview of how it looks like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/koala-bear/448745203/in/set-72157600241140540/
