The Roti Prata House: So Crispy you can use it as a Frisbee!

There are actually many variations of the ever popular Roti Prata in Singapore. One one end of the spectrum is the soft chewy type and on the other end, the super crispy type. All the rest fall in the middle of the spectrum somewhere. This prata would probably be very very close to the super crispy end of the spectrum.

I remember a few years ago, the super crispy prata became very popular and there emerged many stalls around Singapore selling what is known as "Jalan Kayu" prata. Of course they were referring to the famous Thesevi's whose prata is quite different from the version they are selling.

This is a "no holds barred, eat at your own risk" prata which I will only recommend to the younger people with no history of coronary heart disease. Starting with the rich yellow dough which is evidence of the amount of margarine used, to the fact that they literally deep fry the prata in "Vanaspati Butter Flavour Vegetable Oil", you know this prata is really good for your palate but bad for your heart!

The prata itself is very crispy and when you bite into it, it just dissolves in your mouth. It was heavenly together with the curry they provide. 4.5/5 The butter flavoured veg oil does make it very tasty but I can't believe for the life of me that an artificially flavoured palm oil product can be good for you, even if it is vegetable oil. I don't think the manufacturers of this oil care very much about Trans Fats!

Conclusion

Very tasty but very sinful. The little devil on one shoulder is telling me to eat it while the little angel on the other side is cautioning me not to. In the end, I listened to my angel..... but not until I finished most of it.

OMG, that's not a prata. I would not even consider that as a prata. The ones that I have grown up with are crispy on the outside and soft chewy floury inside. The squarish type. Never went to this outlet though it's just walking distance from my house. Till I find the true blue pratas, i would not waste my calories on these....

wahahaha

another one right outside my house which i always walked past and never went in. haha.

I like the Casuarina prata, it's really crispy too.

This place is pretty near where i stay so i visit it quite often. If you like crispy prata, the coffee shop at 6th avenue just opposite guthrie house has excellent crispy prata. the very same stall also sells excellent briyani! the fried chicken drumstick is hea-ven-ly!

You can't call this prata. Should be called a biscuit instead cause it's so tiny.

Gave up eating here as the standard has dropped considerably...

Exactly what I mean, damien. It's not a prata, it's a biscuit, an oil- soaked one :(

The vegetable murtabak is very nice too. There are beansprouts, cabbages, potatoes, tomatoes and eggs. Quite feeling for me. The teh halia is also very nice. Thick and full of ginger taste.

But crispy pratas are nice what.

One man's meat is another's poison.
Food appreciation is very subjective.

Its right where I stay but I really do not like their pratas at all. In fact,I hate crispy pratas. However, judging by the crowds there past midnight, most people must really like crispy pratas.

I don't particularly find this stall nice. I prefer the one at Simpang bedok. I think its called 89.7 or something.

Jalan Kayu one, although a lot of people say standard drop, but i find it still ok.

Maybe i prefer the fluffy kind.
I had 3 kosongs and i egg at Prata House last weekend.

Yes I like the one at Simpang Bedok as well. You can see the reviews here: http://ieatishootipost.blogspot.com/search/label/Roti%20Prata

momo and annoymous

Nobody says crispy pratas are not nice and everyone knows that one man's meat is another man's poison.

You both missed the point. What i said here is that the prata mentioned is not what a prata should be. Get it? Nice or not nice you decide.

I am sure you both have not tasted the best fluffy pratas before, sorry guys.

Why so many Anonymouses?

Frozen pratas are fluffy, that's about the only pratas I get here (ie. Shanghai). No need to get all defensive. Where sells nice fluffy pratas? (Besides supermarkets and their frozen ones.)

Prata should be crispy outside with some fluffyness inside so as to absorb the curry that goes with it. Very crispy prata should be paper thin prata to eat with sugar. That's my view and I like both types.

ieat said...

Here is Singapore's most fluffy prata (in my experience) Check out the thin layers in the pic!

momo, you are the one who is defensive. As I had said in my earlier post, its hard these days to find the authentic pratas we used to have. Perhaps you never ever had eaten a nice crispy and flourly fluffy (layers and layers) prata before and therefore do not know what we are talking about. Till I find a stall that sells them, I will post you the address.

Don't like Jln Kayu's prata, thomson's prata, bukit timah's prata...

Crispy or fluffy? Tot the most important thing was the curry...

Me like "Julaiha" prata - Not sure how to spell ;P cos of the fish curry :)

Went there 2 to 3 times....The menu do not list the price of the prata.....Be careful when u order, it can be quite expensive.....

i used to live near there and tried the prata a few times. I thought it was awful.. We tried the Mutton Briyani there and it was bad bad bad!! The mutton was so tough, bloody and the curry has a thick layer of oil on it. The Briyani rice is clumpy and the food simply take tooo long to come. My brothers and I have sworn never to eat there after a few bad experiences

Palm oil is not transfats what. It's just saturated fats, which is bad but not as bad as transfats. If fals are saturated already, there's no need to hydrogenate them into transfat right.

sumosumo said...

pure palm oil has no transfat. but lower quality palm they will add in other oil that contains transfat, to stabilise it.

thats why the lower quality vegetable oil has transfat.

if my memory serves me correctly..

Have tried twice and both times did not finish even half. Not going back again. This is not prata they should change the name for this stuff.Maybe... rock roti.

Proper prata is at blk 24 Sin Ming Road same row as the blk 23 ya Wen coffe shop. They hv croissant prata 5 small pcs for $2.50. The veg dishes are great. And the service is great. they even change prata for you if you complain.

ieat: Why dun you do a review?

Oil biscuits ! No thanks. look out for the heart attack or strokes. There are at least 3 prata shops at the end of upper thomson road towards sembawang road. some open quite late.

ieat said...

OK, always game for prata.

Perhaps ijeff or Damien might let us know what they think of these prata seeing that it is in your territory?

I went there last week and asked one of uncle staff there for the prices of some pratas on the menu (prices not stated).. he quoted $3 and $4 !!!!!
But when i later placed my order with another staff and got the receipt, I realised that uncle staff was trying to cheat my money!!! How dishonest !!!!

Later when i finished my food and pay at the counter, i was served by the same uncle staff who seemed a bit embarassed as he realised I would know already he was trying to cheat my money....

Anonymous said...

I like the crispy pratas they made but I would be wary of the staff there in case they resort to cheating tactics again !!

FIRST TIME customers BEWARE!!!

P.S: Jus to let first timers there understand, the menu DOES NOT state prices. You simply order wif the waiter and he wud bring u the food and a receipt ONLY SHOWING THE TOTAL PRICE, NOT THE FOOD ITEMS U ORDERED. Hence, they can deny even if u claim the staff misquote prices in an attempt to cheat your money!!
