Big Eater Seafood: KL Hokkien Mee with Big Round Noodles!

$4.80 minimum order

I have been driving past this newly opened Cze Char which occupies a whole corner coffeeshop right beside Sungei Bedok for several weeks now. I don't really know how to explain it, but the place has got a romantic kampong charm about it despite the modern decor. The problem is that everytime I drove past, the place does not seem to be "happening". So being a kiasu Singaporean and not wanting to waste any calories and money, I would drive past it to have supper at Simpang Bedok instead.

But one night I decided to avoid the bustling crowds at Simpang Bedok and decided to drop in to check out this place. I imagined that even if the food was not great, eating supper beside the canal could be quite nice.

I am glad I did or else I would have missed one of the best KL Hokkien Mee that I have eaten in Singapore. If you have been reading the blog for a while, you would probably know how often I lament about not being able to eat a good KL Hokkien Mee in Singapore. Well, I must say that even if this KL Hokkien Mee cannot beat the one in KL, it certainly is a worthy substitute.

What I liked about this Hokkien Mee that sets it apart from the rest is their use of thick round Hokkien Noodles which have an excellent texture and bite to it. The shape of the Hokkien Mee enables you to really slurp it unlike the commoner thin flat variety. The sauce is gooey and shiok and, of prime importance, they have really fresh and crispy, "burst in your mouth" pork lard. Ohhhh.... my current favourite KL Hokkien Mee! 4.5/5

Conclusion

Great kampung ambiance and a memorable KL Hokkien Mee. I will be going back to try the rest of their Cze Char menu. Stay tuned.

Word of caution: Prices of the Hor Fun start from $4 and this KL HKM starts from $4.80. So not your regular priced Cze Char. Bit in between a regular Cze Char and a Seafood Restaurant

I stayed nearby and also noticed this new joint whenever I go to the Post Office. Tried the HKM n Fried Rice. The Fried Rice got this wok heiflavour which both my wife and myself like it. The surprise was the HKM. It is dark in color just like yr photo. They add lots of tiny bits of lard and this really got me saying wah shiok man!

My pick for the best and fav hokkien mee is at My Mum's Place at Joo Chiat Rd. Search around and you will find that I'm not the only one raving :)

Tell you what, the best hokkien mee is at Azhang, if they happen to be serving it.

tsk tsk tsk.. a doctor recommending pork lard laden food...
just kidding...

i think i will go try this stall, given its relatively near to where i live.

whenever i eat this kind of dark hokkien style noodles, i always request for chopped raw garlic in black vinegar, and eat with the noodles. try it folks!

Wah, this is very much like Malaysian style Hokkien mee. Really dark and gooey with thick-thick noodles. Khim, I disagree - I think the pics look great! And pork lard! I do believe you should eat meals that make you happy rather than miserable. So, once in a while, indulge!

camemberu,

for me, e first impression for food is very important. yup, i agreed that "you should eat meals that make you happy rather than miserable".. thus, e moment i see e pictures, it had already made me sick already, let alone happy?? haha..

presentation of food is also important to attract people to eat e food, isn't it?

when i showed my colleague e 2 pictures on today.. e first tots tat come to mind from her was: eeks, look like a plate of worms..

different people have different mentality when it comes to food.. some just eat to fill their stomach, regardless of whether e presentation looks good or not. even if e food taste horrible, they still eat it.. u can't deny tat these kind of people exist, right?

for me, e food presentation must be at least "lookable" before i'll even taste it.. secondly, it's e taste of e food.. if it taste horrible, i'll stop eating it - simple as tat..

e look of e KLHM already spoilt my appetite to eat liao, so i wun try it at all!!

sorry to those who r fans of tis place! =p

i had a try of their Cze Char over the weekend.

didnt have the chance to order much because i had a mix of late dinner and early supper

BTW, they ran out of Hokkien Mee when i ordered.

1) Dry Horfun $6
Wok Heh was there and the ingredients was fresh. There were fish, pork, sotong, prawns. But the flavour was somewhat lacking if eaten without the green chili.
2) Heh Chor $6
This was an interesting dish. a total of 8 pieces of pingpong ball size heh chor. The interior was soft and mushy with pieces of prawns and onions. A plate of sweet/sour plum sauce was given as dip.
3) Sambal Kangkong $6
Spicy, hot, big pieces of heh bi. Serve best with a big bowl of white rice. Only groused was a bit too oily.

Total adds up to ard ~$23 with drinks and rice and all the towels.

No GST, No service charge.

Overall a good experience. Will i visit again ? Yes, with more people to try the other dishes.

I tried the hokkein mee on friday, and it pales in comparison by mile to the ones in KL.

It was really empty for a friday night.

I tried the Fu Pi Juan as well. Not bad but way too pricey for this dish.

Frankly speaking tried the HKM and found that it was not really as fantastic. Good thing is the noodles don't come with the "kee" smell. Other than that, they put in too much lard that instead of complimenting the HKM, it just gets too "er xin". (I'm a lard lover, but this is too much)

Nevertheless, the place is served by extremely friendly people, supposed to be a "Family business", u can see the whole family working hand in hand esp. during weekends. Service Thumbs Up!

I see myself back for a couple of weekends for the Cze Char and Crabs, not for the HKM though.

A Must-try:
Salted Egg Crabs - The best I have tasted, next to the Geylang G7's dry version, theirs is a "wet" version. ( I have forsaken my Chilli, Pepper or even the Crab Beehoon since i discovered Salted Eggs Crabs)

Stir-fried French Beans - the thin version of "Gan Bian Si Ji Dou" aka Dried Flattened 4 seanson beans. Their french beans are the slim ones that we seldom see. Haha

Beancurd Skin Roll - known as Fu Pi Juan, I always see myself ordering double. It always seemed not enough.

Many more but i feel the above 3 are more worth mentioning...

Another BEST Thing is they don't charge GST & Service. Ppl who are worried on the carparks lots available, they provide free valet for the customers! Thumbs Up!!!

Leslie, maybe a Part II on Cze Char Dishes will do great! Me and my group of frens are anticipating more write-up on this store as we always look this blog up on weekends food gathering. Thumbs Up for your write up too!

Perhaps you can let us know where the other die die must try Cze Chars are?

Hi Khim, sorry, didn't realise you replied. Oh dear, the Hokkien mee really look so bad to you? Like worms? lol

Yes, first impressions are important but what we perceive is also due to conditioning. For me, I encountered this kind of noodles a lot when growing up (it was my dad's favourite), so I don't instantly associate it with big slimy worms. Instead, it is "oh wow, just like those noodles from my childhood!" right down to the dark colour, udon-like noodles, gooey consistency, and even ingredients (sliced lean pork, fish cake, prawns and cabbage).

So to me, the presentation is fine (I am also one of those who prefers food to look good - in fact, preferably look, taste and smell good).

By the way, is this place air-conditioned?

ieat said...

No but it is by the river and it's got a very nice Al Fresco dining atomosphere

Another good one is Tampines Blk 138, but don't know the Cze Char Stall name. Have not seen any write-ups on it. It has had been our regular weekend dinners with my parents before I got married, now my parents experiment on your referrals with me most of the time (Hahaha). The last time I went it has became so crowded, and when I talked about it with my group of frens, it seemed alot of them are aware and likes the Cze Char there. Maybe you wanna try? keke... I Like the Pig Trotters, Asam Fiah Head, 3 Eggs Spinach, Garlic Steamed Fish...Maybe that's all I know of, as recent months have been following your blogs real closely!

I think they moved back to Blk 137 the round market but they start in the evening. Are we hitting at the right cze char stall. Beside there is a fish head steam boat stall too.

jeanniejean said...

Hmmm, smart...Checked with my mum dearest and she said: The stall is still at Blk 138 Tampines, kopithiam near the round market. Tel 6787-9181 Fu Lee Seafood. They set up another Cze Char stall at Blk 802 Tampines.

jeanniejean, tks for the confirmation, will certainly check this cze char stall at Blk 138.
I recommend you togo to Jin Fu at Blk 844 Tampines, the pig trotter, fried binjai are superb. Since I did not try the cze char at Blk 138 I cannot compare.

Just had dinner here with my family and parents. Very crowded. Every table was taken. Thanks to Uncle Smart's advice, I made reservations earlier. Nice meal. Favourite dish was the salted egg crabs. Yummy!

Went to Big Eater at Upper Changi and ordered quite a few dishes inculding 1 big Chilli Crab (signature should be Crab with Salted Egg).

Waited for about 40 mins before the crab arrived (during wait had a few other dishes, hor fun, hokkien mee, prawns, thai chicken..), was going to tuck in when realised that something seems wrong with the crab dish.

1 pincer seems bigger than the other, this could be quite normal so stir the chilli paste and found there were total of 5 claws (2 pincers should have 4 claws). Double counted and found really got extra empty broken off claw, stir further to check for all parts and realised many legs missing and 1 joint missing (supposed to have 2 joints for each pincer).

Complained to the server and some staff in white shirt came over to help, told him to count the claws and ask where are the missing legs and joint. Also asked him how come some parts bigger and some smaller, he said will check with kitchen and replace. I told him do not trust the establishment since they did something like this in the first place, he kept insisting replace. I told him no way, cancel the crabby crab.

In the end they still charged me for the buns which were wasted due to the cancelled crab, I find the crab incident very dishonest and just wana warn you guys if you go there makan to check properly
