Food for Thought: Nice People, Great Food, Social Causes, Decent Prices! I just love this place!

Once upon a time there were three very different little girls.....who grew up to be three very different women....but they have three things in common...they're bright...they're are passionate about God..... and they opened a Restaurant......The Restaurant's name is Food for Thought.

Charlie's Angels fans will recognize immediately the blasphemous adulteration of the opening lines to the TV series. Well, these aren't exactly Charlie's Angels but they are certainly Angels of a different type. And actually there is also a guy involved who can't be considered an Angel, so he's Bosley. And instead of Charlie, they report to a Boss who is also unseen but whose voice is sometimes heard.

Food for thought was founded by three young ladies and a guy with a passion for the underprivileged. Their first project was School of Thought which is a Tuition centre founded in 2002. The centre channeled some of the profits into a special fund to sponsor the tuition fees for underprivileged students. Food for Thought is their second project and one of the first causes they are supporting is to raise funds for the provision of clean water to third world countries.

The other thing that caught my attention was that their website stated that they don't like "paying a lot for very little" and "being asked to pay for tap water". Sounds like my kind of place! I looked at the Menu board and sure enough, soft drinks were $1.50 and Cappuccinos were $3 with no service charge or GST. These people are serious about what they say.

Sandwich Sampler $19.90 includes 2 soups, salad and different fillings for your Foccacia

The very first thing that struck me about the cafe was the atmosphere. It was very cosy and there was an air of joyful expectation. Chef David was busy behind the counter adding yeast to the flour to make the Foccacia and simultaneously entertaining diners. David was previously working at St Julien's but decided to become a hirling (hired by three and a half lady bosses no less - they tell me to consider Bosley a half) at the restaurant because he felt passionate about the cause.

David and his accomplice, Vietnam born, US Sous Chef, Peter managed to churn up quite an interesting array of dishes that are a refreshing twist from what you usually get at your friendly neighbourhood cafe.

We could not decide what to order so we asked for the Sampler which comprised of 2 soups, your choice of salad and a "do-it-yourself" sandwich set which featured the BBQed pulled pork, Mama Heng's Kong Bak (Braised Pork), Basil Pesto Chicken and Grilled Vegetables.

The TLC (tomato, lettuce and corn) salad was a misnomer as it did not have any lettuce in it. Instead it was made up of watercress, laksa leaves, tomatoes, lemongrass and warm sweet corn with a dollop of herbed butter. The combination worked amazingly well and I found it quite a refreshing excursion from the normal salads I was used to. 4.25/5

The must try dish for me was the BBQ pulled pork which is a whole pork shoulder slow roasted till all the collagen has been gelatinized, then pulled apart by hand. The result is melt in your mouth morsels of shredded pork with caramelized BBQ sauce. Not good.....Very Good! 4.5/5

Mama Heng is none other than Chef David's Mum and she makes a pretty mean Kong Bak. It was good but it's something that you can easily find elsewhere. Still it was great with the Foccacia Bread and Garlic scented Olive Oil. 4/5

They have two flavours of soups here which will appeal to people who are watching their weight. Both the Shitake Mushroom Fennel and Broccoli soup are made without cream. The Broccoli was good but most of the bite came from the cheese they added on top. The Mushroom soup could do with a bit more ooomph. Maybe I am just used to creamed soups. The portions are big and could constitute a meal in itself so take note when ordering. 3.5/5

Food for Thought is strategically located just opposite the National Library and with Coffees starting at $2.50, it's a great place to drop by to have a cuppa and a browse through the books that you just borrowed from the library. The cakes are sourced from various hidden talents in the community ie their friends and their momma's friends who are budding bakers and have a really nice homemade quality about them.

I seldom rave about cakes but I was rather taken by the Old Fashioned Red Velvet. One of my favourite cakes is my wife's Carrot Cake and the thing I enjoy most about it is the cream cheese frosting. The red velvet has a generous amount of frosting and a mesmerizing red colour which was a bit jarring at first. But wow, the combination of the cream cheese frosting and the mysterious red coloured cake was, to quote our dessert specialist, iwatch_ueat, "Almost perfect". I went back again later in the week to buy some more! By the way, you might be wondering what gives it that red colour......I wonder too. Guess you will have to go find out! 4.75/5

Conclusion

I just like this happy little cafe. It's a bit quirky, a bit old fashioned yet it's confident and exudes an atmosphere of youthful exuberance that is refreshing to the soul. The people here are happy and happiness is contagious. Come in for a pulled pork sandwich and finish it off with the Red Velvet and a cup of coffee and I can almost guarantee that you will go home happy too.

Oh yes, the picture on the right shows David and Peter carrying their Mega Sampler Board. If you have a group of friends coming in for the sampler, they will pile it all up on your very own bar top counter! ($10 per pax)

U hv to tell me (by email lor!) what is the flavour of the Red cake !!!!! I cannot go and try mah!!!!! It looks very very yummy....is it strawberry, raspberry or what???!!!!! And what does the frosting taste like?

The frosting is the same cream cheese frosting they put on Carrot Cake. As to the flavour of the cake, we really could not put our finger on it. It just tasted good with the cream cheese frosting. As I said it is pretty old fashioned. So the texture is like a good old butter cake, not these new very soft sponge type cakes. I luv cream cheese frosting. It is actually quite easy to make. Philadelphia cream cheese, icing sugar and lemon juice.

Red velvet cake is a very common cake in the Deep South of the US. It is only coloured by red food coloring- no special flavour.

Didn't anyone ever watch that Julia Roberts' movie, Steel Magnolias, where the groom's cake was a red velvet armadillo cake? It had grey icing on the outside, shaped like an armadillo- and when cut into it was blood red!

Will definitely pop by and try their pulled pork sandwich :)

I've passed this place a couple of times on the way to lunch appointments at Purvis St and wondered what it was all about... I'm glad you've demystified it... will definitely pop by one of these days since it's just a stone's throw for my office. Thanks!

Nice, little cosy place. Tried the red velvet as highly recommended. Found the frosting too sweet and the red part too 'dry'. It doesn't work for me. Neither for my 2 female "cake/ dessert fanatic" companions.

well it was really good for me! The frosting were creamy and the cake itself were fantastically moist. Wonder, why your serving isn't and I intend to find out.

BTW, thanks for the feedback!

The service is the worst I've experienced for the year 2007. I'm never going back there.

My colleague commented that their service was really bad. The staff were too slow and confused my colleague's order. She wanted 2 cakes to eat and one to take away. After 10 minutes, she had to repeat her order. Then 10 minutes later, only 1 cake came for eating. She had to repeat her order again.

The cashier also took too long serve each customer and hopped off to help the waitress while serving a customer.

hello ann and jacqy,

this is shiaoyin, one of the partners from
food for thought. :)

Thank you for your initial patronage and your frank feedback. i do apologise for the poor experience you have had - it must have been terribly frustrating to be let down after you gave us a chance.

We don't have much excuse to offer. So I hope you can grace us with your understanding - we are complete newbies at F&B and are going through our teething phase.

please email me at yin@school-of-thought.com to provide me more details about your grieviances? Do allow us to learn from our mistakes and also to make amends to you.

much love,

my friends and i paid a visit last night. the food was decent and i really like the atmosphere. it's a nice cosy place... and the decor just screams FUN (my friend for some reason kept the napkins. she thinks they're cool).

i do have a little gripe though. while the serving staff is smiley and very friendly... they do need to take a little more initiative when customers come in. my friend and i stood around for quite awhile at the counter trying to get the attention of the staff. one or two of them smiled back and continued whatever they were doing. in the end, we had to grab the nearest person to ask for a table.

that said... it was an overall good experience. will definitely be back soon :)

Apart from the service, i personally feel that this is a fun place to dine.

Was with my g/f waiting at the door for a good 2 minutes before i caught the eye of a waitress. Instead of acknowledging us, she continued with what she was doing.

There was a chef making soup at the counter and I thought he could have showed a little more initiative by telling us that we could just grab whatever seats that were available.

In the end, it took us about 5 minutes just to get seated.

Service aside, the pulled pork sandwich and the soups were delicious and value for money.

Think once these teething problems are sorted out, I'm sure this will be my next hangout :)

Sorry to say that I went with my friends who think that the food is kinda overrated here. Maybe... bad day for the cook?

I myself think the food is okay, but I don't agree with 4.5 for the pulled pork. It's nice but I really don't think it's THAT good.

4.75 is too high for the carrot cake too (but that's just my opinion). To get a 4.75, one should just about melt with happiness and none of us felt any of that, sadly. :(

The service may have put us off our appetite too.

Just sharing my opinion and thanks for sharing new places to eat...

shiaoyin, don't take to heart regarding ann and jacqy' s comments. At first I did and nearly miss dining at a great place.
I came by on wed. Took the sampler for two. The spicy pork and pulled pork.

Waitress took my order and was very patient as I was unsure about the dishes.
Appreciate her spending some time on the ingredients in the dishes as I told her my friend is averse to beef.Apology to those queuing behind. :p
Overall the food was above average. The spicy pork was great, the pulled pork need some working on the marinade.

I tried the red velvet cake the other day, and i love the moist texture! Definitely will pop by again. Thanks for the recommendation!

I went there when it started, at a non-peak period of the night, waitresses were nice but this funny thing happened: The waitress approached us regarding donations and i'll pull out 2.50 (a $2 note and the coins in my pocket at the time) and handled over to her, she apparently dropped the 50cents into the "donation" container and the $2 into the "tips" or as she put it "waitresses university fees" container...

Being polite, i just kept quiet... I would have given some tips (if they asked) on top of the donations...

hi ho...
i actually dropped by Food for Thought after reading this..

and i tried... the combination of

Mama Heng's Spicy Pork Sandwich
and the Chinese Ceaser Salad..

here's my take..
The Chinese Ceaser Salad is very salty.. and at times.. it seems to have a LUMP of saltiness.. :O

and the Mama Heng's Kong Bak on the bread.. like what u mention.. easily find elsewhere...

i have yet tried their velvet.. and will drop by again..

i tried the pulled pork today it was good. service was excellent.. i ordered a lemon tea as I was waiting for my friends who were going to be about 40minutes late. I sipped finish my ice tea and my throat was feeling abit dry. The waitress noticed it and gave me a cup of ice water which was just what i needed!

I was requested for a table for 4 when I first went in. However, I sat on a table for 2 while waiting as there was no more seats. The staff who should be a student actually ask me if I would like to move 2 small tables out in the open so that my friends can sit together when they come. I told her that I will decide when my friends and arrive and she took out a neat sign "reserved" on the other empty table. Futhermore, all the staff was always serving with a smile!

Was there yesterday and tried the pulled pork sandwich. It's OK, wouldn't say it's that great. Would give it more of a 3.5. Serving of pork was generous but didn't find any crackling that the menu promised. The side salad was a little sad but maybe you can't ask for much in Singapore for S$7+. My friend's big breakfast wasn't anything to shout about either. The fried eggs looked pre-cooked. Guess they must be since I didn't see any serious cooking going on behind the counter. Service was really really slow but we reckoned it was because there was a big group of 8 people in front of us. Don't like the seats along the wall behind the counter 'cos they are so cramped. Also tried the red velvet cake. Not bad though my friend remarked that the one I make is better. Maybe it suffers from being in the chiller for too long? I like the entire concept and applaud the fact they donate 10% of profits to charitable causes. I might give it another chance though if I was looking for a place to have coffee and cake. The choc malteser cake looked promising...

I've been to this little place a few times now, and I must say that I love the atmosphere. It's something about the combination of good food for a good cause, the excellent location (being opposite the Library, but near a bunch of secondhand bookstores and craft stores) that makes it so cheery. The decor's lovely and I also like that they support local art and baking. I love that they host events like the Great Singapore Fair Trade Sale. The menu always sounds wonderful and they have a few good specialties (their drinks aren't bad), but the desserts sometimes disappoint.

On the subject of Red Velvet, I'm not a fan of the version at this cafe. I agree with the commenters who found the frosting too sweet and the cake too dry. Was with two other discerning eaters and we concurred that we had all tasted better Red Velvet. The carrot cake is not bad, though it could be more flavorful. I'm not one who can say much on this because I've only tasted carrot cake from a few places, but I think it's beaten by Bakery Depot's for sure.

The menu could do with a few more vegetarian and gluten-free options (given the general vibe that I associate this place with...thinking Food03 here). I also wish better use was made of the space (it's tiny! Had to leave because of the lack of space a few times) and the chairs weren't so odd (a few tables have bar stool-style chairs that are terribly hard to...maneuver in general). Given the pride they take in their main courses, I think more attention should be placed on ensuring the desserts are top form because often that's what makes or breaks a place like this...other than the coffee of course. Service for me has varied Widely so I won't comment on that.
