Steak Sandwich $12.50
I have been searching for a good steak sandwich for ages and when Damien raved about this one at the newly opened Tuckshop, I thought I should check it out.
Now most of the time the problem with Steak Sandwiches is that you really need good teeth to eat it because most places use a cheap cut of beef which could pull out your dentures if you are not careful. (No I don't wear dentures.....yet)
Not here! I was amazed at how tender and delicious the generous cut of NZ tenderloin steak was. And it had a nice beefy flavour which was quite hard to get in tenderloin. Of course the beefiness still cannot beat a nicely char grilled USDA Prime Ribeye, but for $12.50, this is very pleasantly acceptable. The other really great thing is the whole Portabello mushroom and the caramelised sauteed onions that accompanies the steak. It just goes to show that sometimes you just need great ingredients rather than fancy recipes to make a great meal. 4.5/5
Halloumi Sandwich: $7.50
But the pleasant surprises don't stop there. Vegetarians will be glad to know that they have a very tasty Halloumi Sandwich which is made from a seared slice of Halloumi and topped with Hommus and lettuce. The combination worked wonders. The Halloumi is a cheese originating from Cyprus and is made from goat's milk. It does not melt when grilled and so it is an excellent substitute for a meat patty. I really won't mind going veg for a week if I had this for a substitute! 4.25/5
Fish and Chips $7.50
One more dish to recommend on this Pub Grub Roundub sic and that is the good old Fish and Chips! Actually Pub Grub is quite simple straightforward food since people usually go to a Pub for a drink and the food is just there in case you are hungry. But simple does not mean it is not satisfying and simple also does not mean that everyone gets it right. For Fish and Chips, there are really only three factors involved: Good Fish, Good Batter and a Good Cook. Get it all three right and you have a fantastically simple yet satisfying meal. Fortunately the Tuckshop gets it right on the three counts!
If you are starting to mumble about $7.50 being more expensive than the $4.50 fish and chips you get at the hawker centre, let me just say that you are paying for what you get. The most commonly used fish for fish and chips nowadays is the Cream Dory which is essentially the Catfish (pangasius hypopthalamus) farmed in Vietnam. The Cream Dory is farmed in ponds and grow very fast. Their cousin, the Pacific Dory (pangasius bocourti) has a cleaner taste and the flesh is more delicate but is more difficult to cultivate as they are farmed in cages along the Mekong River where there is a continual stream of fresh water. Cream Dory can sometimes taste a bit muddy depending on the farming conditions.
Needless to say, the Tuckshop uses Pacific Dory which justifies its higher price. The batter is light and crisp and thick cut fries are done very well. Well executed fish and chips! 4.25/5
Conclusion
Great place for some satisfying Pub Grub! For $12.50, this is the best Steak Sandwich I have come across in Singapore so far.

Tried this place with my friend soon after this place opened... We both had the steak sandwich and was fully satisfied with it... but I was wondering if it would be a good idea to suggest to the boss to use the whole Portabello mushroom with the onions in the steak sandwich as a main ingredient (served with other vage)... I'd definitely like that
Is this place the same mgt as Moomba tuckshop located in Raffles place behind Bank of China? Same concept.

Looks amaaaazing.
ARRGH, to think tat I just spent $13.50 for a Swenson so called mega burger last night tat doesnt even look half as good as the steak sandwich
The fishes are from Vietnam? Yikes, my mum avoids buying fish from there as the chemicals and other whatnot from the bombs and mines of the Vietnam war have seeped into the river. So try not to eat too many products from Vietnam.

i've been hunting for a good (and decently priced) steak sandwich since i came back to singapore... this looks awesome! i can't wait to go down and sink my teeth into this one...! thanks ieat!
I thought the Mekong river Pacific Dory had a bad enough reputation, there's actually a worse type called Cream Dory?
The Mekong river's been called "a known sewer" by the fishing industry. Aussies in particular seem quite concerned about this fish and the labelling deception. These Vietnamese catfish are nowhere near a real Dory. But then again, maybe they are trying to protect their local fishing industry too.

I think I'll stick to steak sandwiches - those look good!
If you are concerned about the Dory then you can basically stop eating any of the generic fish and chips that are being sold in Singapore except for those which they tell you the specific type of fish being sold!
In any case you can also apply the same reasoning to Crabs which are scavengers. Having seen them cremate humans along the river, I always wonder if the crabs we eat have been feeding on human remains!
The worse part about eating fish and chips is the rancid oil outlets use- even Hans!
Yes I is be concerned about Dory dicks and I don't eat fish! It's chickens all da way for me, bird flu be damned! Just need to try the human kind of chickens and I can be called a chicken cunnoisseur!
Yes, ieat, you are right - most of the anonymous white filets served in fish & chips are likely to be the Pacific/Cream Dory. They're everywhere because they're inexpensive, so restaurants can price them attractively and still make a profit.
Well, sure, nobody has dropped dead after eating them (at least not instantly). But personally I just prefer fish (best is sashimi!) from the ocean and not the river, which I associate with a muddy taste, so I do tend to check what type of fish is served.
Crabs eating human remains - yes, it may sound gross to human sensitivities (which is why a lot of people avoided Sri Lankan crabs after the Asian tsunami), but if it's an extension of the crab's natural feeding habits (eating dead animals), then it's just the natural cycle of life. Even plants and vegetables eat dead people.
However, industrial waste and sewerage filth poured into rivers is a different thing.
I don't know about cremated human remains though. Do crabs eat ashes? Or is that just more pollution?
after reading the review, i went to try it out with my wife. We ordered the steak sandwich n the fish n chips. I must say it was great !
A highly satisfying meal, somemore in a pub setting ! The steak sandwich was very big n in order to really taste each of the items, i eat them 1 by 1, starting with the salad, mushroom, the bread and lastly the steak ! It was really shiok and best thing of all, the whole bill adds up to only $22 !
Really good value n will be there for more !
Just rathering, issit better to eat the steak sandwich tog like a burger, or to separate eat it ? Any ideas ? Thanks
I usually eat it seperately as my mouth is too small to fit everything in :)
I usually eat the bread together with the salad and enjoy the steak at the end.
The steak burger is one of the best that i have eaten for the past few years.... the cut of beef is generous, well cooked, juices oozes out with each bite you take......in fact it is so good that i eat 2 at one go....
Will definitely go back with friends....... totally worth the money and traveling to Tanjong Pagar.......
