Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee: Taste IS subjective
There are several phrases which I think are overused when it comes to discussion about food. One is "Overated" and the other is "Taste is subjective". I have always prided myself to be a bit of a rebel (ok a soft core rebel) so I steer clear from using those phrases.
However, today I seem to have no other recourse. You see, everyone says this place has got a fantastic Lor Mee and the last time I was here, it was sold out. What's more they were even featured in the 2007 Makansutra Street Food Masters. So my level of expectation was very high.
I guess the gold standThe gravy was good but was not the kind of "Holy Grail" experience that I was led to believe. The ingredients was also good but not tongue tingling great. The fried snapper that they put on top was generous but tasted a bit fishy that day. Also they ran out of Ngoh Hiang which did not help. One thing that was good though was the black vinegar which was really smooth and piquant. So, much as I hate to say it, this stall is "overated" but then again "taste is subjective". 3.75/5
Conclusion
Any fans out there who would beg to differ?

You sure are right taste is subjective,I have tried your 2 is other reviews Golden Shoe & Tiong Bahru though good, to me this Old Airport Rd is so far the best.
there is a famous lor mee stall at bukit purmei area - lunch queues on wkdays can make u wait up to 45 mins ... anyone tried that stall? i dun like lor mee personally but even i find their lor mee 'subjectively' good !
Have tried bukit purimei before as well the Bukit Batok. If not mistaken they were from the old Tiong Bahru market and very popular (famous)there.Have tried Amoy food ctr too. To me Old Airport Is so far the best, though Standard is not as good as they were in ealier days
Hi ieat, I was not too impressed with Xin Mei Xiang lor mee too. But I love the lor mee from Bukit Purmei and Tanjong Pagar Food Centre. They are the best I have tasted so far.
Go try the Loh Mee from the noodle shop that is located at the corner of the kopitiam that is located next to Fei Fei Wanton noodles (the older original stall, not the one that open late by the brother). The stall is run by a nice aunty and I must say that their Loh Mee is the best I tasted so far, in your 4.25-4.5 category! Their chilli noodles is pretty darn good too. Not many people know this gem as most people go for the wanton noodles instead! Do update your blog on it :-)
i love the bukit purmei loh mee!! i usually have it in the morning, when they just open at 7am. The queue has already started but it least it's faster, 10 - 15 mins wait. love it!
Lor Mee at Bukit Purmei is one of my favourite but can't stand the long wait at lunch time - averaging about half and hour and that leaves me 10 mins to slurp it all back before catching a bus back to Shenton Way ehehheeh....
You are right, taste is subjective! Contrary to your low ratings for Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee, I simply find it is the best. Funny thing is that I never liked Lor Mee since young until a friend convinced me to give it another try and voila, I was a convert. Despite that, I have tried several lor mee stall (except Bukit Purmei) and none has ever given me the same yearn for lor mee like Xin Mei Xiang. Anyway, that's my subjective opinion
definitely a case of taste is subjective. it deserves a 4/5 at least. i think this stall's lor mee and tiong bahru's (not the shark meat one) can rank as the top 2 lor mee stalls in singapore.
Let u all a little gem, this lor mee at Tampines Round market is very shiok with the fried fish. I also discovered their dried prawn mee is superb too. Bashful Hunter is a regular customer n told me about it.
Smart
can tell me which stall plsss?
Summerpeach, it is at the outer ring, along the row of the Haka YTF, House of Dessert, forgot the name but not difficult to find if you walk along.
Will try Dr Les to blog this.
tried this a month back.
lor mee is lor mee..just noodles covered in starch. how good can it get? not my favorite hawker dish in general...
there are a couple famous ones in CBD area. amoy street 2nd floor has one, which is so popular they occupy 2 stalls.
and golden shoe hawker center has one popular one served by an old chinese couple on the 3rd floor.
sin bee hiong doesn't serve ngoh hiang with their lor mee.
Good food should always go early. u wait until the store about to close then go eat of cos not very good lor... For me, i go eat with my bro at around 9.30am i can said that this is the best lor mee i ever eaten.
I was there with my parents one weekend morning, and the queue was already long. It was only "ok" for me tastewise, though my parents thought it was really good. Must say that the portion is really huge though... and the ngoh hiong was good!
