Big Ben's Place: Eating the Humble Pie

With ieatjr

The meat pie was one of my favourite eats when I was studying in Australia. You can get them at just about every corner eatery that you can find. It's one of those foods that I often get a craving for, just like Hokkien Mee and Satay.

It's not easy to find a classic Aussie Pie in Singapore. A lot of the pies here are made of puff pastry rather than the shortcrust pastry. Lucky me, Big Ben's is a great little pie shop that is just round the corner from where I live.

Steak, Bacon and Guiness Pie $3.50

What I like about these pies is the fact that they are close to what I used to eat in Australia. The crust is just right such that they are not overly crumbly but firm to the bite. You could almost describe it as "Al Dente" but not quite. My favourite flavour is the beef and mushrooms. They use nice chunky beef here and its just comfort food for me. I think that the amount of beef chunks have been reduced somewhat in recent days due to the increasing food cost. Although it might not be as good as the best pies I had in Australia, at least it comes close to a better than average pie there. 4.25/5

Chicken Pie $3.50

The chicken pie is one of their best sellers, but I did not like them as much as I like the beef pies. Even in Australia, I seldom eat chicken pies. I felt the gravy was too watery and herbally for my liking. 3.5/5

Conclusion

A pie to satisfy my craving for an Aussie pie. Now ieatjr has also developed a taste for it too!

The pies in Aussie also include lamb and kangaroo! Which is why I am kinda wary of eating them now...

Hey ieat, I believe the second pic should be steak and guinness pie, my favourite pie. Finally this place get blogged. Been wondering...
Anyway, had stopped going since the price went up from $2.50 from way back. Like you said, the filling is reduced.

Did you know that pies were invented in Britain..

when people had no refrigeration then, so they carried their food in pastries pockets like these to keep the food longer when people travelled on foot or horses on long distances. the pastries were not meant to be eaten in those days. thats how pipes evolved.

just some trivia.

Their fruit pies are pretty nice too. Apple is my fav.

Typical weekend lunch. 1 S&G and 1 Apple. Washed down with a pint of kilkennys.

I miss Jester's Pies from Australia and especially their "Morning Glory" Pie which is excellent for breakfast - bacon, egg and cream!

Tks to HFB for reminding me this chain pie shop in Au n Nz. Jester's Pies is like their local version of Old Chang Kee but their quality is much better than OCK imo. Not bad for a lazyman meal, just grab 2 pies and a latte from a coffee joint and you are good to go. Always wonder why pies never really take off here. I really don't mind having pies as a meal itself, only if they were more widely available.

Anyone care to shed some light ???

Too many places are selling run-of-the-mill pies and its hard to differentiate a good pie. As always, it's very subjective.I dun fancy Don's for example.

But there is one shop at Joo Chiat Road next to gourmet patisserie Obolo that has very good pies (in. my. opinion.). The whiff of aroma immediately catches and lures you in. Never caught the name of the shop because I was fixed on the pies.

Perhaps pies are not so commercially viable because the best pies tend to be homemade? There are countless recipes and it wouldn't be difficult to DIY. And here in SG, people usually bake pies generally during special occasions or parties, or small family gatherings. Sort of a once-in-a-blue-moon thing.

Indeed it is called Boulevard's pies. The pastry is nice and buttery and the filling is delicious.

One of my very very early blogs:

Photos not quite as good as they are now.

So I see, we've been lured towards the 'blue light' lol

Hmm Big Ben's look extremely tempting and it's near my place too!

In fact, my brother - who really is Big Ben - finishes his tuition @ Yarrow Gardens now...They close at 10 you say?

Love the uttery and creamy chicken pies with thick chunks of chicken @ Delicious Muffins - Sunshine Plaza.

Their curry puffs are also very tasty and both puffs use puff pastry which I personally prefer.
