Yuet Loy: Mom and Pop Cze Char!

With Cactuskit, liverpool, keano, smart, jems and damien

Tofu with Beansprouts

If you are hankering for some really shiok dishes to make you eat more rice, then you can try heading down to the Smith Street Food Centre to check out this little Mom and Pop Cze Char who specializes in Cantonese style cuisine. Actually this stall is quite famous for its Beef Hor Fun and I have been wanting to check them out for the longest time. But when I eventually got there, they ran out of Hor Fun! Sigh! So I had to settle for the Cze Char dishes which turned out to be quite a treat.

Now this couple are pretty old school, so they don't believe in a "low salt" diet so the dishes all come out pretty tasty (salty). The homemade tofu with beansprouts is a simple dish but there is something about the texture and taste of the tofu that made it go very well with rice. 4.5/5

Stir Fry Kai Lan with Sliced Beef

Since I couldn't order the Beef Hor Fun, I settled for the Beef Kai Lan. The beef was tender and the dish was good. But lacking the Hor Fun with Wok Hei, it just didn't have that ooomph I was expecting. Still, it was a commendable dish. 4/5

Salted Fish Chicken

I don't take much salted fish nowadays but by golly, when you actually get to eat it, it is quite shiok. Again this Salted Fish Chicken dish is a great dish to down that extra plate of rice with. 4.25/5

Conclusion

Humble little stall that is churning out really great Cantonese homecooked food! Well worth a visit.

Have to agree with the food being a tad too salty for my liking that day. I actually enjoyed the beef dish with Kailan quite well :) keke.

Went back another day with a few others and wasn't too impressed with the beef horfun either. The san lou was better and also not salty:) Also liked their gou gei soup alot. Simple yet wholesome and surprisingly wasn't salty keke

I dunno why but I thought that the beef in your stir fry dish resembles walnuts! :) Before I read your caption, I thought that it was some fushion dish of veggies with walnuts.

The place serves good old canto comfort cze char dishes. Not many of these around anymore. Definitely worth visiting.

I ate at this stall before, the cze char, its quite nice though it may be slightly salty to me so much so that I need to drink more water after eating.

loved the beef and kailan too...need to revisit the place, did not really like the salted fish and chicken...not enough salted fish? :)

Their tofu is called golden coin tofu (kam chin tau foo). Eaten at this stall many years ago, think they were from the demolished Hill Street Food Centre previously. Their food is salty, not for those who don't like saltish food.

I have always enjoyed reading your blog and looking at your professionally taken photos.

I would like to say that Yuet Loy is one of those stalls that preserves the original method of cooking some of the traditional dishes like kam chin tofu, beef kailan and steamed chicken with salted fish. My comments will be too long to write here so I have written an article on these dishes in my blog www.cherubicbeing.blogspot.com

You are most welcome to visit and read my humble opinion about these dishes prepared by Yuet Loy.

Thanks for your wonderful critique which I enjoy reading exceedingly.
