Yi Shi Jia Shu Shi: Do you like Wanton Mee with Tomato Ketchup?
You know, some people might frown upon the use of Tomato Ketchup in wonton mee, saying that authentic wonton mee should not have ketchup in it. I think what they are trying to say is that Hong Kong style Wontan mee should not have ketchup in it. But I actually know a lot of people who love wanton mee with tomato ketchup in it because they grew up eating it. So I really think that this form of Wanton Mee which is also what I grew up eating really is our very own version of the dish.
This stall in Kovan Food Centre prides itself in selling a Wanton Mee which is hot, sour, sweet and salty and they also want the world to know that they are still using the same SinSin brand of tomato ketchup since their father started the shop some 30 to 40 years ago.
The wanton mee is very old school. You still get a generous helping of crispy pork lard as well as the traditionally thin slivers of tasty char siew. The noodles are quite good quality and I am told by the Lao Ban Niang that they spend a little more money to procure a better quality egg noodle.
Undoubtedly, the star of the show for me was the Wanton. They were very tasty and one of the best that I have tasted. Overall, I would give this Wanton Mee a 4/25. I would have loved a juicier and thicker charsiew to go with it.

Conclusion
You should pay this stall a visit if you are looking for a simple, old school Wanton Mee. They are quite popular in Kovan Food Centre judging from the queue they had even at 2.30pm in the afternoon.

I have always asked for Ketchup in my Wanton Noodles. Been that way since I was a kid. Of course with chilli too. Even better with some dark soy sauce.
This is the way I like it, who cares what others think! But I actually haven't seen dry version of Wanton Noodles in Hong Kong. Only the soup version and of course without the Char Siew.

This is one of the best wanton mee stall in Hougang. I eat from this stall at least once a week for the past five years.
The ketchup is actually mixed with stock, so it is not as acidic as one would imagine with regular ketchup. It has a very nice sweet and sour taste which goes well with the nice soup with a touch of sesame oil and spring onion. The noodle is cooked just nice with a springy texture.
I love eating wanton mee with lot of tomato sauce since i was a kid and would always ask for extra tomato sauce when ordering. It tastes especially yummy with tomato sauce and i would be very grumpy if i were to eat wanton mee without it now :> My mum had added tomato sauce to my noodle when i was a kid as i cannot take spicy food and feels that the noodle is too bland without chilli sauce and it has now become a permanent habit.
Of course, tomato ketchup must be added to dry wanton mee. This is the secret to the great taste.
Hmm, it looks like we have more tomato sauce supporters than non-tomato sauce supporters!

Personally, I only have ketchup in my dry wonton mee.
i like my wantan mee wif ketchup too as i dun take chilli sauce..
but for e wantan mee at nam seng wantan mee, i always eat in plain.. cos it's great even on its own! ;)
There is a food in sarawak call TOMATO KUAY TEOW. I suspect it is this version of wanton mee.

Leslie, there is one famous Singapore food that you have never reviewed before. Wanna guess what it is? It is so famous that you can walk into any kopitiam and see people eating it. But I can't even find that word on this blog.

definitely old skool wanton mee with ketchup. i am not a fan of wanton mee but your photo of father and son brought back memories. due to familiarity to this ketchup version, i nearly spit out my first try of hongkong wanton mee in disgust which tastes completely different. no offence to HK style frens. one mans meat is another mans poison. to each his own.
back to your photo. nice. i cannot confirm if it is the same stall but i do believe it is the same as the one where pop brought family to eat almost every sunday which is about 20 yrs ago. my elder bro was a huge fan of that stall and he still likes his wanton mee that way.

Nam Seng, just opposite Don's chicken pie or 30 seconds walk from Hock Lam beef noodles at China Square! :)....I'am not sure what sauce they drizzle on the noodles, but as Khim said, I can have it plain...one of the few noodle places where I don't ask for chilli!

When chidhood days most wanton noodles were with Tomato Ketchup .Years on when stall owners only ask with cilli or not.No chilli you just get plain. I have eating with chilli without knowing they have Tomato Ketchup when asked for.Nowdays must be mixed with chilli and Tomato Ketchup for me and gang.Sure to try this stall.
i prefer wantan mee with ketchap =] taste sweeter.
Leslie, it is Cze Char Wet Bee Hoon. I can't even find the tag Bee hoon on this blog. The only thing that come close is SATAY BEE HOON.
Not forgetting the dry version which people call Sin Zhou Mee Fern. In other countries people actually call it SINGAPOREAN FRIED BEE HOON. It took me a lot of energy to explain to people outside of Singapore that that dish is called a different name in Singapore.
Anyway there's a few tokong fried bee hoon around and wonder why you haven't reviewed any when you eat at Cze Char stall.

Hahahah. So many supporters of ketchup in noodles. I like my wonton mee and fishball mee with ketchup too. I usually tell them to add more ketchup than chilli sauce for these two noodle dishes.
But if the wonton mee is hong kong style, I'll skip the ketchup.
The other wanton noodle stall (No. 51 I think) beside the soyabean drink stall has,IMO, much better noodles and char siew. The queue there is just as long (if not longer) than no. 57. They sell both the ketchup and "black" versions of the dry noodles.
there used to be a stall at tampines central. its the building with popular & prime mart.
i like the wanton mee there ALOT. think e guy is called Micheal if im not wrong "wen ge wanton mee".
they do no drizzle e black sauce. its either ketchup or chilli.

hey.. i like Nam Seng wanton mee.. i work in Raffles Place and have craving for it once a week. But there is even a nicer wanton mee (old school type) near my home.. I usually have it for breakfast on Sat if my dad wake up early to buy.. keke.. me a fortunate gal to enjoy nice wanton mee ard me.. Praise the Lord

Singapore wonton mee is different from Hong Kong. We have char sieow and ketchup, they only have wonton.
ah ultra late comment. I grew up eating this for more than 10 years. I personally feel that this stall, must ask for a bit chilli. It's a little spicy yet sweet at the same time.

wanton mee with ketchup is the worst thing ever tasted. lost my appetite the first time i put that stuff in my mouth... never again.
I love this wanton mee, ever since I am a kid. I have been eating this noodles for more than 10 years and I'm still loving it.
There is another stall that you should definitely try if you are ever in kovan food market again.
The yong tau foo stall on the first floor. Orange bowl beside the western food. Not the one that is on the same floor as the wanton mee. The one downstairs.
The soup is fantastic. I love their yong tau foo as much as I love the wanton mee. The soup is clear and there's no MSG added in the soup. Authentic brewed soup and this is the first stall that I see with so much vegetables. Definitely one of my favourite food.
This is the perfect comfort food. I have eaten this since I was a wee lad at 12 years old. I even put ketchap in my maggie mee - a family recipe!
