The Food Levitation Effect revealed: Submit your own Photos and win attractive Prizes from Canon

Ok, its time to reveal how these series of floating food fotos are taken.

Some of the theories are very imaginative indeed and although I used one specific trick, the other theories just might work as well.

Those of you who guessed that I used a toothpick got it right. This optical illusion is based on the same principles as the Balducci levitation technique which is used by David Blaine in his street magic. Essentially it is just a matter of giving the illusion of a floating object by playing with the line of sight.

Here is my explanation of why this trick works:

1. Most of us assume that the supporting structure would be directly placed under any object, so in this case when the toothpick is placed behind the onion, it just does not seem as if it should be able to balance. When placed at the correct angle, the brain is fooled to believing that the onion is floating.

2. The effect is enhanced by the fact that the background is blurred while the object is clear. Even without the toothpick, it will look very distinct. This is achieved by taking the photo with a large aperture ie a small f stop, in this case f2.8. The blurred effect is also enhanced when it is taken at the zoom end of the lens which in this case is 70mm.

3. It is important for the basket to be in the picture as it serves as a frame of reference to enhance the effect. When we look at the picture, the eye perceives the height of the basket to be around 5 cm and so when the it sees the onion at the same level as the rim of the basket, it enhances the illusion of the floating effect.

On the earlier occasion, I took the pau picture with a leftover pau just when we were about to leave the restaurant. It was just one of those things that suddenly struck me when I was contemplating whether I should just finish off the pau rather than having it go to waste.

The pau is bigger and heavier than the onion, so I had to balance it on 2 toothpicks. I was quite lucky that the toothpicks fit snugly into the gaps of the bamboo steamer. There wasn't much time so the photos did not come out as well as the onion shots. I had to cheat a bit by removing a some shadows with photoshop, which is why I did not show this photo in my first post as I cannot claim that is has not been "photoshopped". If I had a bit more time, I could have just moved my camera just a fraction higher and taken the perfect shot. This angle actually works better than the previous picture I posted.

Anyway, there you have it. Now you too can try taking some levitating food photos.

I spoke with the good people at Canon and managed to get them to run a competition so that you can also showcase your floating food photos on their digitaldreams.com.sg website.

Here are the rules:

1. The theme is levitating food. You can use any technique you like to achieve the effect but please no pies in midair on route to someone's face. It has to look as if it is just hovering in mid air.

2. No alteration of the photo is allowed. The photo must be submitted without being "photoshopped".

3. The photos have to be resized to 800x600 pixels

4. You are allowed to submit as many entries as you like. Entries are to be sent to: greatfoodshots@gmail.com

5. Photos will be displayed on Canon's digitaldreams.com.sg website.
(Some photos have already started coming in so you can click on the link to view them)

6. Please include your name, email and contact number when you submit your photos. Put contact number as your filename.

7. Closing Date is 30 April and winners will be notified. The judge's decision is final and so on and so forth, blah blah blah.

Here are some of the prizes you stand to win:

Canon Powershot A1100IS

The grand winner will walk away with Canon's latest A series Powershot A1100IS camera which features 12.1mega pixel images and their latest Smart Auto mode (an improved Easy mode), Motion Detection and Face Detection that can detect up to 35 faces.

Canon EOS 5D Mk II miniature with 1GB flash memory

The 3 best entries will win a Canon EOS 5D Mk II miniature with 2GB flash memory.

Many thanks to Canon Singapore for sponsoring the competition.

You can view the photos at www.digitaldreams.com.sg/food which will be updated regularly throughout the length of the competition.

Remember to submit your photos to: greatfoodshots@gmail.com

I look forward to seeing your levitating food photos!

we r looking for a camera after gal drop our last one n the shutter got stuck n cant go back inside.
In the canon website under new product do not list Powershot A1100IS.
Q1: So for beginners just get the Ixus 85IS or Ixus
870IS can take pictures which adjust the focal
length or not?
Q2: So Ixus can take levitation shots or not?

ieat said...

Well, there are many ways to skin an onion.

You can even try taking with your handphone camera. But if you want to achieve a shallow depth of field ie the blurring of the background effect, then you definitely need a camera which you can adjust the f stop.

If you are using a point and shoot, use the macro function for the best effect.

no offense but i thought the solution was pretty lame. i was really hoping that it was done without toothpicks, just by camera trickery and lighting, not with a toothpick...

ieat said...

Well, why don't you try taking a shot and submit it for the competition? Let's see if correct handling of lighting and proper use of the camera makes a difference to the shot. :)

cactuskit said...

Yeah Anon, show us your non-lame skills. We can all learn from you. : )

I always believe in K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple ....

How would the judges know if we used photoshop? To resize it, photoshop has to be used, nobody uses paint for it.

I have an idea for the competition, but my exams are coming. I hope I can fit it in.

ieat said...

Well, the judges might ask the winners to they achieved the effect in the first place.

Anonymous said...

lol

im the same anon up there
anyways
the reason y i was so disappointed was because i was convinced that it was done with lighting. all my friends were thinking toothpicks and i was like, no no, can't be... thats just too simple. i just thought toothpicks would be too simple solution, as in anyone, with or without a photography background would be able think of that.

as for that challenge for my non-lame skills, i wont be taking it up as would need some skills to begin with.

haha !!!! :)

ieat said...

Ah Anonymous,

That explains why you cannot appreciate how the photo was taken. Even with a toothpick, if you cannot take the photo properly, you won't get the effect you want. :)

Anonymous said...

Good idea with the toothpicks. Simple and sweet.

I think the website http://www.digitaldreams.com.sg/food
is not working. Come someone please update?
Thanks.

ieat said...

It should be up soon once some photos are uploaded.

We saw the canon AS1000IS at Bishan Junction 8 but cant find the AS1100IS. Anyone can help with info?

wahcow said...

ahaha..i will try this out...but i really want to do the falling onion or bao thing....

and...i need to get my yoda also.....moohahahaha

raysongoh said...

To resize, you need not necessarily use photoshop or sny image editing software. You could use a resizing software such as Multi Image Resizer, one that does only resizing but not touch-ups ... some of these are available for free downloads :-)

ieat said...

If you really don't know how to resize, its ok, just submit your photo. But it is going to be a big file and will take a long time.

cactuskit said...

Ok my wife just submitted the first picture to kick start the contest. : )

liverpool1965 said...

can't seem to find the link to submit the pictures? cactuskit, how do I see the submitted photos? thanks!

ieat said...

They will only be posted tomorrow, I think. Someone needs to do it manually.

cactuskit said...

Can see the pix already. : )

ieat said...

Whoa! Floating Strawberries! Wonder if they are Korean or US?

liverpool1965 said...

not korean I believe....time to borrow my brother's camera! :)

iJeff said...

Now I need to find my Mao Shan Wang :P

ieat said...

I would love to see a Mao Shan Wang levitating over someone's head! Hahah!

Your idea is great. Only see 2 photo entries only in Canon website ?

ieat said...

Well, hoping to see more entries come in this week!

Hello there :> Just wanna ask if the competition is open to everyone of all ages? Cause I'm below 18 but I'm really interested to take part :(

ieat said...

There is no age limit or age requirements! We have written to all the schools photographic societies to take part so you are in good company.

Fion said...

Hi, I'm just wondering if you have receive my entry?

Anonymous said...

Two questions:

1) Can we include people in the photo?
2) Is photoshop allowed for basic adjustments (ie. contrast, levels, etc?)

ieat said...

Hi Fion,

There are many new pics that have just been uploaded. Can you check and see if yours have been included? If not can you write to me at leslie.tay@gmail.com

To anonymous,

Yes by all means use your imagination. Get people involved. As long as it is about food and it is levitating. You can use any method you like.

Basic adjustment like contrast and levels are allowed. Just no cut and paste, clone tool, dodge, smudge etc.

Fion said...

Hello, Ive just send the photos to your email (leslie.tay@gmail.com). Just wondering if you have received it? :)

AndrewB said...

Sent another one to 'greatfoodshots@gmail.com', hope upload to Canon web soon.

More Reasons to Fly.....

Have fun. Thanks.

Very nice entries.

Like the one in which an apple is floating between a lady's hands. Only thing is that the shutter speed is 1/8000sec ....

Dave said...

Just curious if all the submitted entries get received as I dont see some of the names in this comment list in the displayed entries (including mine).

thanks...

cactuskit said...

Dave, I think it takes a few days to be uploaded. I sent mine in on 29th May, and it hasn't been updated as well. Probably next Monday since its a long weekend. : )

Anonymous said...

whats wrong with shutter speed 1/8000? I thought can use any technique? I dont think is any easier than using toothpicks and stuff. Must have taken quite a lot of tries trying to get it directly in the center and balanced.

Anyway good entries.

cactuskit said...

No problems with that. If it was pulled off that way, its definitely more difficult. But I suspect not done that way from the look of the picture.

Anonymous said...

Im still waiting for mine to be uploaded too...

by the way cactuskit, care to explain why you dont think is done that way?
i believe 1/8000 is more than fast enough to freeze it?

David said...

Cactuskit: Thanks... The girl and apple shot is indeed well executed, not sure if it falls with the rules of the competition about levitation but it looks good.

Good luck to all.

Anonymous said...

hello everybody

Thanks for the compliments. Im the one who took the girl with the floating apple. good to see my shots finally get uploaded

cactuskit: Yes it is done using high shutter speed to freeze it. I really took alot of tries to get it and really have to depend abit on luck. The easier way i found out it to hold the stalk inbetween the gap of the finger and release with little movement and pose it. I did that outdoor with bright sun and black background. when you said "Only thing is that the shutter speed is 1/8000sec ...." kinda confused me. Doesnt that already explained that i freeze it using high shutter speed? I just want to clarify that i really did spend alot of time and effort plus all the scolding from school for climbing out of the window to the balcony and sweating like hell trying to capture it in midair and dont wish to have any false assumptions. Took almost 400+ shots to get it, and most of them are apple out of focus or off center and etc. But really thank you for liking it. cheers

David: hey thanks. Ya i guess it fit since it already stated floating in midair using any technique, and the blog also demo a techinque similar to what i did. so i dont see a problem with that haha.

Anonymous said...

If ieat released an onion and freezed it in the air using high shutter speed, will the blog draw much attention .....

Anonymous said...

ieat showed a stable and lasting effect/trick ...

cactuskit said...

Wow! Sorry. Tks for clarifying. 400+ shots. You have a very nice and patient model there. : )

The reason I thot it wasn't done that way earlier was because at the speed, I felt that there simply wasn't enough time for the hand that released the apple to be restored to the claw position. But since you did it, it can be done. : ). Great shot.

Anonymous said...

cactuskit: Thanks hahaha. Ya at first was using only 1 hand at the bottom and toss it up instead of dropping it down. but the effect is ugly because i cannot pose the hand. trial and error until i reaise i can do it another way, so ya.

When the apple is held by the stalk, the fingers are closed, so when the hand snap into the claw like form, it release the apple at the same time

ieat said...

Good trick Anonymous. It really doesn't matter how you do it and in fact, by doing it differently from all the others, you make yours stand out even more since everyone is wondering how you actually managed to stick that apple in mid air. Nice shot.

As I mentioned before my latest one with the egg was not done with a toothpick either. The whole competition is to get people to be creative.

Well done all! The judges (not me) will come to their decision next week, so we shall see who wins the Powershot camera. But I am sure everyone had a fun time taking the photos!

Anonymous said...

Hi Dr. Tay,

Any news about the other entries that didn't end up appearing in the Canon site but were submitted way ahead of the deadline?

ieat said...

We will consolidate the photos tomorrow and I will let everyone know that the photos have all been uploaded. Then you can check and see if yours have been included.

cactuskit said...

Makes sense to me. As you drop it, you make a claw. All the best! : )

Anonymous said...

Any idea when the results will be announced?

ieat said...

The results have already been published:
