Ming Yun Fried Hokkien Mee: Everyone loves the Underdog!

With Cactuskit and Taukwa

Hokkien Mee $3

Everyone loves an underdog right? One of our kakis, Champagne recently shared this video with me which was a real inspiration. In case you still have not heard about Susan Boyle, she is this 47 year old lady who managed to put a big smile on Simon Cowell's face. When she rocked up on stage, no one would ever imagine that this lady was going to bring the house down. Just watch this, it will really brighten up your day.

This relatively unknown Hokkien Mee in Redhill is just such an underdog. None of the usual accolades pasted on the front of the stall except one self proclaimed story of long snaking lines when the stall was still at Bedok Blk 85 more than 10 years ago. According to the owner, he moved to somewhere near Tampines Round Market where he used to only open for 1 and a half hours in the evening before he was sold out. How true this is, I do not know. Perhaps some of our readers might be able to shed some light on this stall?

Anyway the owner who is in his fifties now says that he had been frying Hokkien Mee since he was in his teens. He moved to Redhill after he took a break to have an operation and has been here for four months. Since no one talks about his stall in our forum or on the internet, we would have easily missed this stall except for the fact that Cactuskit had the sixth sense to give them a try.

We were unexpectedly surprised by how good this Hokkien Mee was. It is the thick bee hoon with gravy version but it is fried till the gravy is just nice and greyish brown. That grey brown colour might sound a bit dreary but for Hokkien Mee lovers, it is a sign of a tasty gravy. For $3 a plate it is probably the best tasting plate of Hokkien Mee at that price. 4.5/5

Conclusion

Always nice to be able to find a stall which not many people are talking about yet. Give it a try and see if you agree with us.

Yes, it took us by surprise. It was quite special the day we tried it. Will go again soon to check out its consistency.

Just had it again for dinner. Still was as good as the first time I tried.

Still have in my mind hokkien mee should be black with bits of deep fried fatty pork croutons, to be eaten with raw garlic in dark soy!

yes! the noodle is very very good! very nice wok hey taste and the cripsy pork fat which fried is still tasty and crispy after cooked. one can see the uncle cooking the broth till a nice rich colour and, i have never seen a underdog tho for this stall, but if i am nt wrong, last time he at bedok does is that the prawns will be added inside to braise with the noodle, but now he adds' in last minute. but still great tasting ! one of the best in singapore! seriously, darn good!! haha

wow, ieat certainly reviewed many hokkien mee stalls. i'm a hokkien mee lover and try to visit those recommended in this blog as far as possible. never knew there were so many good fried HKM stalls in Singapore. this is next on my 'to try' list.

I beg to differ.I think this stall is overated. I live around Redhill, and I tried this Fried Hokkien Mee. So so only, atmost I'll rated it 3. Why ? The prawn & sotong are really overcooked, they are very hard. If you observe, they will fried alot then wait for order, I don't think it is freshly cook. The overall taste is just average.

Whats a good hokkien mee for you then? Can recommend you favourite few HKM for us to try? You sound like you're a HKM expert.

Kallang Bahru Hawker Centre has 1 Fried Hokkien Mee, they only cook when you order. But most of the time there are alot of people waiting. Taste is very good. Another one is ABC Hawker Center. But the best is along Serangoon Road where the old uncle used chacol (sorry can't spell) to fried Hokkien Mee, too bad his has retired and now the son take over.

I agree that the Redhill Fried Hokkien Noodle is just average. In fact in redhill hawker center there are a few UNDERDOG stalls that having constant LONG Q & aren't rated by media or newspaper but the food are really super. Sorry I can't review here or next time I have to Q & wait much longer once the stalls get popular. Just go down during lunch time & you can tell from the QQQQQQ

okay, i do need to justify this uncle why you say he cooked pre-order. which i know, is that, he cook, but still not over-cook and he wana (hitm)- muem? - pressure cooking the noodles, . its like within 5 minutes got pple order liao. but somehow i agree. or say is.. if the noodle arbsorb too much stock, the wok hei taste is gone, nt as tasty as it is rated for 4.5. but seriously, it is one of the best. i know one more in commonwealth drive, but howeva, the noodle is ... i duno how to say. but there' is a kind of huai niang ( reimsemble feelings ) towards the hokkien mee. cos the eggs coated the noodle very nicely, so it's like way of traditional style. whilest most now outside are braised hokkien mee. !!!

AHHH... traditional hokkien mee, anyone know's the one beside @ commonwealth? but now the area is temproary renovated.

its niceee !!

what happened to the short-cut to the forum? :)I thought there used to be an icon just before the recent comments section..

Oh I removed it because of some problems with photobucket. You still have the forum tab on top of the page.

maybe coz i wasnt that hungry, so mingyun HKM was so-so only...
the Tanjong Pagar HKM (2nd floor of the hawker center, corner stall, beside the super noisy tong tong chiang char kway teow stall) was mo-tak-teng with chunks of deep-fried sar-cham-bak. To wash it down, order the uber fantastic ground peanut ice kacang from aunty in the lane behind (also corner stall).
another winner is the one at AMK food center (ave 6). Again it is a corner stall...
how come all these HKM are in the corner stall of every lane? Even the Singapura HKM in Whampoa is the last stall of its lane...

JugsofJugsofJugs, the HKM at Tanjong Pagar FC is superb but only if the young man fried it. Talking about corner stall, there is one other HKM at Whampoa which is also at a corner, I think the name is Kheng Lee, lane behind the Hoover Rojak i.e. before they renovated the FC.

After reading your post, I went to Redhill during lunch, recognised him from Bedok 85. Of the 2 HKM stalls in Bedok, his was my family favourite. After polishing off the HKM (it was better than before), he came to my table to chat. Told him the chilli sauce need improving but forgot about the overcooked ingredients. He said he is aware and already sourcing for another supplier.

ieat, did you know that he is ambidextrous - he can fry HKM over 2 woks zimultaneously when there is a long queue!

ieat said...

Oh yes, I will go back to take photos of him doing that next time.

I went to Redhill today for lunch. My UNDERDOG stall as usual long QQQ, so I gave the HKM another try. Well actually it's allright maybe 3.5. But like one of you said the prawn & sotong were overcooked. Well for $3 it's OK for me, but if were to Q i'll think twice.

I still prefer the Hokkien mee call Geylang Lorong 29, thanks to IEAT.

Its was the first place that me and my first love went to on our dating. we Follow IEat to explore all nice foods in singapore.

That hokkien mee is still unbeatable, in my opinion for so far all the Hokkien mee we tried.
