Haig Road Food Centre Imprompto Lunch Session
Haig Road Food Centre will be closing in Aug for renovations, so we had to go down at least one last time to visit all the famous stalls there. The main event was Yong Li's Kway Chap which is Cactuskit's all time favourite which he will sorely miss when they close. Everyone agreed that the Da Chang is very well prepared and clean.
It was great to meet all our new kakis from the Facebook Group! With all the positive response, we shall be looking at organizing more informal sessions like this. If you want to be informed of the makan session, make sure you are registered on the facebook group! Click here to register.
In the meantime, if you missed our session, you can still go down yourself to check out the stalls!

Ah what a pity this Haig Rd FC.
Yong Li was very clean tasting and the innards braised to impeccable texture. I for one dun appreciate large intestines, but I had to take one bite when persuaded by Cactuskit. Maybe it's just psychological after all.
I'm not sure if I would wait 45 mins for the satay, but the peanut sauce is power! Spicy with a lot of kick. Couldn't appreciate the tripe satay though.
Luckily I need not wait as long for my mee rebus (with begedil, thank you!)
I hope they never tear down Hollywood next door.
thanks for the session...my take is as follows:
The mee rebus was kind of special. The noodles were ordinary, but the sauce was excellent...very tasty, aromatic, and satisfying. I would have preferred larger chunks of mutton in the pegedil, but Fandi Mona's version is totally homogeneous within.
The satay was not up to standard, I feel. The meat was tasty, but very tough - chicken, mutton, beef. And the kuah was a bit different...it was red, and seemed more like a chilli/tomato based sauce than a rich peanut sauce that usually accompanies satay. I will give the satay a miss.
I don't eat Kway Chup, so will have to remain silent.
So there is no temporary location they will be in? How long is the reno?
I am surprised you don't take Kway Chap Pchong! As I said, I am no big fan of innards, but Yong Li is one place where I will eat the large intestines. Very clean and tasty.
I think they might possibly move to where Geylang Serai Temporary market is currently when all the Geylang serai stall holders move to their newly renovated FC. However, Yong Li has decided to take a year's break.
ieat, I don't eat kway chup because of your principle of "don't waste calories on yucky food"...I just don't enjoy the taste, so won't waste calories on it. I will eat deep fried innards in chok, though...:-)
I better go and get my fish soup fix before they take a break or moved.

eh!! They're closing?!?! Sigh... I haven't tried most of the stuff Les has blogged about yet! Hope they'll be all back when I come home.
Closing for renovation only, I am sure almost all the stalls will remain the same.

I'll be quite lost when they close for renovation. For many years, I've visited Yong Li at least once every 10 days or so.
It was nice to meet up with frens and new faces! : )
And Holydrummer, thks for taking a piece of the intestines even though you don't eat them usually.
I think after eating Yong Li's intestines, I am now a intestine convert.
Cactuskit, maybe you want to try the one at Lor Ah Soo FC. It's pretty similar.
But I forgotten their unit number.

Sure. Let me know the add when you can. I'll go check it out. Thks! : )
