ieat Durian Degustation IV: Registration is now Open

Sorry, due to overwhelming response. Registration is now closed.

Since our last Durian Degustation, I have had a lot of requests to organize another one. This time round, I wanted to find a bigger place which can host at least 100 pax so that more people can come.

So after a bit of haggling, I am glad to finally announce that the nice people at 717 Trading have agreed to host our Durian Degustation for a very special price of $20 per head (MSW is currently $18 per kg). 717 Trading as you might already know, has a solid reputation for providing only the best Durians and when you visit their stall you can get to see Durian Gloves adorning the walls with famous names of people from Mediacorp to Ministers.

Mr Goh has assured me that there is going to be MSW and D24 available, but we will also get to taste whatever cultivars are available that day. In order to get the $20 per head price, we must gather at least 100 pax, so I am counting on everyone for your support!

The Details:

Venue: 717 Trading, 22 Yio Chu Kang Road, #01-01 Highland Centre
Time: 8pm (registration starts)
Date: 31 July 2009 (Fri)
Price: $20 per person

To book your seats, email to: ieatishootipost@gmail.com, in the title put Durian Degustation IV and leave your name, nickname, handphone number and number of persons coming in the first line of your email. Keep the first line as short as possible as I can get all the info I need without opening the email.

Due to overwhelming demand Registration is currently closed

The Participants list is published here.

Haig Road Food Centre Imprompto Lunch Session

Haig Road Food Centre will be closing in Aug for renovations, so we had to go down at least one last time to visit all the famous stalls there. The main event was Yong Li's Kway Chap which is Cactuskit's all time favourite which he will sorely miss when they close. Everyone agreed that the Da Chang is very well prepared and clean.

It was great to meet all our new kakis from the Facebook Group! With all the positive response, we shall be looking at organizing more informal sessions like this. If you want to be informed of the makan session, make sure you are registered on the facebook group! Click here to register.

In the meantime, if you missed our session, you can still go down yourself to check out the stalls!

Ieat Durian Degustation III - the Aftermath! Burrrp!

A very warm welcome to our new kakis who signed up for the Durian Degustation session from the ieatishootipost Facebook group! It is great to put a face to some familiar nicknames as well as to get to meet some lurkers!

I think we all can say that we really got our money's worth that night. Ah Loon gave us much more than a tasting menu and I saw many kakis had to tapau durians home!

The evening started off with the Hong Xia from JB which was excellent, followed by the D13 which looked quite similar the the Hong Xia but the taste was less complex. This was followed by the less common Penang Hong Xia which is usually quite sought after, but I think the batch that night was not really at its prime. This was followed by the Black Pearl which I thought was the best of the lot that evening. The bitterness in the Black Pearl was excellent. Then we had the Hulu, named because of its violin like shape like the gourd of the same name, followed by the petite Golden Phoenix and finally, we finished with the prized Mao Shan Wang or Butter Durian which is again excellent.

We are smack in the Durian Season, so prices are great. The Hong Xia is $7 per kg and Mao Shan Wang is $12 per kg. If you are looking for a reliable, honest Durian Seller, then you should visit Ah Loon and Ah Teck. They are at 231 East Coast Road (Opp Jago Close). You can contact him for your durian needs by calling 97514828.If you mention ieatisihootipost, you will get the special ieatishootipost price!

We might organize another degustation soon if there is enough interest but we will at least 50 pax to be able to get the same deal. So if you are interested to attend another one please let me know.

Impromptu Makan Session this Friday

We are organizing an impromptu makan session this Friday at Chako restaurant which I blogged about last week. This restaurant is very small and can only seat 20, so we can't organize it as a formal session. I am experimenting with the facebook event feature to organize a series of small impromptu gatherings. These are small informal gatherings where kakis can just gather to eat and talk. So if you are interested in coming, please sign up at the facebook group by clicking here.

Cugini Italian Restaurant: Lunch for Charity

Following the excitement over my last post on Cugini Italian restaurant, we wasted no time in organizing a menu tasting to see what else our two Italian guys can whip up in the kitchen. This time round, I am going to let our kakis do the review. So below is Sumosumo's review of the dishes.

The Cugini Menu Tasting Review - by Sumosumo

Starter: Carpaccio di pesce alla Sarda con Polvere di Bottarga + Gambero rosso Italiano con riduzione al campari (Sardinian style hand cured fish carpaccio dusted with mullet roe + Deep fried Italian red prawn with almond and bitter Campari sauce)

Generally forgettable i think, as most people didnt find it too exciting. The shrimp was a little dry after the frying, and the mullet roe failed to lift the dish. The cured fish was pretty ordinary.3.75/5

(Note from ieat: We started 40 mins late that day, so the prawns had lying in the warmer for a long time. I am sure they would have been much better fresh)

Soup: Zuppetta di pesce alla Siracusana (Sicilian style seafood soup)

Robust, hearty and rustic. The seafood bisque had a good strong crustacean, prawn taste without being too heavy as the tanginess of the tomatoes lent an appetising twist to the soup. One can imagine this being an everyday soup at home, as it had a very home cooked taste to it. For the asian palate, it was leaning on the salty side, but Gerardo said the olives and capers gave the soup its saltishness, and no salt was added - according to him, this is the way it's consumed in Sicily. Much effort was put into it, as its made from 20 different ingredients. 4.25/5.

Pasta: Spaghetti alla Sarda con aglio, olio, peperoncino, bottarga e gamberetti (Sardinia spaghetti with garlic, olive oil, chilly, mullet roe and mediterranean prawns)

Consistently good, the pasta was dense, perfectly al dente, and absorbed the simple flavors of the garlic and chili. Every ingredient was mixed in the right proportions and hence complemented each other perfectly. The pasta was so good in itself with just that nice bite and slight chewiness in its texture, so good that the prawns became almost like an afterthought. Damien, the resident carbo man who loves his noodles and pastas, found it superb. 4.5/5

Ravioli di agnello alla Siciliana con crema di carciofi e burro
(Freshly made Sicilian style lamb ravioli with artichoke cream and butter)

I found this dish excellently executed, and I am not a big fan of ravioli. The ravioli was filled with tender shredded lamb and the pasta had a rich flavor from the egg yolk which was used to make the ravioli skin. Because the ravioli is very filling on its own, having it as a sharing dish is recommended, as there are 5 raviolis served as a main dish, and one cannot eat more than 2 without feeling "jer lak". 4.25/5.

MIlanese di vitella su mostarda di Cremona
(Milanese style veal cutlet served with home made Creomna mustard sauce)

Most people did not comment on this dish, but i thought it was a very competent veal dish. The meat was tender and flavorful. Perhaps, the sauce could have been poured on separately as i would have liked the crust to retain its crispiness. 4/5.

Carre d'agnello arrostito al pepe verde con pure' di patate all'olio
(roasted lamb chops with green pepper, served with mashed potato)

I think everyone liked this dish, except for fashionfoodie's table who got theirs undercooked. The lamb had a salty marinade crust to it which brought out the flavor of the lamb well. I would have preferred a slightly sweeter type of sauce to accompany the lamb. 4.25/5

Guancette di manzo Wagyu brasate con salsa di carciofi e cacao amaro
(Braised wagyu beef cheek with artichoke sauce and bitter cocoa)

The beef in itself was as succulent as when i first tried it, to the point of melt in your mouth. (In my mind, butter made of meat). Some of the ieaters similarly found the texture to be superb, but others thought that, given wagyu with extra fat is naturally more tender, a little less braising time would have given it a texture with more bite. However, it was generally agreed that the accompany sauce was too bland and the beef itself could have done with a more intense seasoning. Tenderness: 4.9 (if you like your meat tender) 4/5 for the artichoke and cocoa sauce. Generally the feeling was that either a stronger sauce or stronger seasoning would have given the dish a bigger lift. Overall 4.25/5.

Dessert: (Tiramisu and Panna Cotta)
The tiramisu had not enough mascarpone cheese, too much cake and a little soggy. Very ordinary. 3.25/5

The white chocolate panna cotta, was light, not overly sweet and gelatanous. It was silky, smooth and light. Almost like tauhuay. 4.25/5.

Conclusion

My thoughts mirror Sumosumo's so I think that we both have similar taste when it comes to Italian food. Do read our other kakis comments on their own experience.

Astons Prime: Great Value Sizzling Steaks

Astons Prime had been a victim of its own success, or rather, the success of the first Astons Specialities which is located just a stone's throw away. From its inception, Aston (the owner) had wanted Prime to be a place where you could get a great steak at a great price. He wanted to use Prime to showcase better cuts of meat and quality produce. But somehow, it had always been in shadow of Specialities. Along the way, I thought that Prime lost its focus somewhat when it went into a lot of fancy, modern type cuisines which required birds of exotic names being stuffed with things that are hard to pronounce.

What I wanted was a great sizzling beef steak for less than thirty bucks. I wanted to re-live the good old days when you could walk into a steakhouse and be hit by the wonderful aroma of sizzling beef and be teased by the tantalizing sound of oil bubbling on the hotplate. Cairnhill steakhouse was like that in the good old days. Even Jack's Place. Sadly Cairnhill Steakhouse is but a memory and Jack's Place, well, they are not quite the same as in the past.

So when Aston finally brought in some hotplates and revamped the menu, I got pretty excited. I think this time round, he really got back to the basics of what made Astons a success in the first place -- Really good food at really good prices.

New York Striploin 250g $19.90

After this latest revamp, what sets Prime apart from Specialties is two things. First, the hotplate. Purists might say that the hotplate would overcook the meat. But for me, the hotplate excites my sense of smell as well as my sense of hearing even before it satisfies my sense of taste. To prevent the beef from overcooking, they place it over a bed of sauteed onions which over the course of the meal turns into a nicely caramelised accompaniment. Secondly, they use better meats here. Aston managed to get exclusive rights to sell Rockdale beef which produces quite a nice Long Fed Ribeye and Striploin as a standard item.

Veal Rack 250g $31.90

Our makan kakis were invited to Astons for a special session to give their feedback on the latest menu. All in all, we had a great time. I think everyone liked the idea of the hotplate and we all agreed that the prices were very attractive. There were of course some issues which needed to be worked on, especially pertaining to the hotplates and the service. One thing that everyone did enjoy that night was to be able to taste a several items on the menu rather than the single steak.

Value for money is still the key feature at Astons. A quality Long Fed New York Striploin, 250g on a sizzing hotplate served with a fluffy baked Russett potato and buttered mushrooms is just $19.90 with no GST or service charge. My pick is the Long Fed Ribeye Xtracut, 250g, $22.90 which I thought was comparable to steaks that I have eaten elsewhere for around the $30 to $40 range. 4.5/5

There were some steaks which needed more work. I thought that the tenderloin was a little dry and could do with some bacon wrapped around it. Best also to avoid the porterhouse steak for the moment unless you just want a big piece of meat to satisfy that meat craving.

King Salmon Steak $23.90

For those who are concerned about their cholesterol levels, the selection of fish is quite good. Aston's King Salmon Steak is a NZ wild Salmon which in my opinion is best served medium rare. This is especially if you like sashimi. The taste of wild Salmon is distinct from the farmed ones that is so common nowadays. 4.5/5 The Sablefish which is also known as the Black Cod is also very good. If you like Gindara at Japanese restaurants, this is the same fish. It is a very smooth and oily fish that is high in Omega 3 fatty acids, so it is always a joy to eat. However, I thought that since the fish is already so oily, it should have been served with a lighter sauce. 4.25/5

They do have a beer battered fish and chips for $14.90 but I would not recommend it at the moment because they use Pacific Cod which can be a little tough and fibrous. Astons is busy looking for a replacement after our feedback.

New Zealand Black Angus Ribeye "Pittsburg Style"

The surprise item of the night was the NZ Black Angus Ribeye which Aston cooked in a different style where he got the surface of the steak was really charred. We had a great discussion as to whether this should be called "Pittsburg Rare" which just means that the outside is charred while the inside was still rare. Aston also did one which was medium on the inside and charred on the outside which is a style known as "Chicago Medium". Steak specialist PChong, who has eaten at a lot of great steakhouses around the world gave his stamp of approval for the NZ Black Angus Ribeye done Chicago Medium which was also my favourite that night. The charred bits really adds a nice smokey flavour to the meat just like how it does for Char Siew. Some of our other kakis did not quite enjoyed the charring, so you might like to try one before ordering all your steaks to be done the same way. Aston should hopefully be serving the NZ Black Angus as a standard item soon. He tells me it should be less than $30.

Conclusion

I think Astons Prime has finally found its identity. Great sizzling steaks at around $20 without the ++ is hard to resist. If you like to try your steaks charred on the outside, ask for it done Chicago style and tell them if you want it medium or rare in the middle.

Ieat End of the Year Makan Session: Siang Hee Restaurant

Many thanks to Damien and Champagne for organizing our end of the year Makan Session!

Thanks for everyone for turning up and making the Makan Session a great success.

For me the best dishes of the evening has to be the Ter Kah, Pumpkin Prawns and the surprisingly shiok hotplate Oyster Omelette. I think everyone would have to admit that $18 for a 10 course meal is just about as cheap as it could get considering we had so much seafood and the portions were all so big.

The Ieat 2nd Anniversary Charity Makan Session

A big thank you to everyone who supported our 2nd Anniversary Charity Makan Session which was held at Aston's new restaurant at The Cathay.

This year we are supporting the kids from Oakley Prison's Ministry. As you can see from the pictures, the kids really had a great day out. It really does warm the heart to see so many happy smiling faces!

I had the privilege of talking to this little girl who is looked after by her Grandma because her daddy is still awaiting release next year. Her mother had left her when she was still a baby, so Grandma is her sole caregiver. In order to keep things going, Grandma is still taking on oddjobs while she is at school. It was such a happy day for her as she seldom gets to eat out let alone watch a movie. It's all worth it if just for this one little girl, isn't it guys?

After the kids went off for their movie, our makan kakis were treated to a produce degustation courtesy of Greengrocer.com.sg. Boss Helene gave our kakis an introduction to gourmet produce from around the world. I think the only complaint that day was that there was too much to eat. (OK lah, that's better having to go for Hokkien Mee afterwards). By the time the ieatSuperburger MkII beta appeared, everyone was already so stuffed!

The auction went very well and everyone were in a charitable spirit. The biggest bid was $500 for the dinner for eight at Ya Kwang, by Nuffnang boss Ming. In all, we managed to raise another $8844 for the Oakley Prison's Ministry which will be used to buy other stuff that they need.

Praise God for bringing ieatishootipost to its 2nd year anniversary and for bringing so many kakis into our midst without whom the makan session would not be possible!

In particular I would like to thank:

Event Organizers: TauKwa who was in charge, Khim for registration and seating and Cactuskit for planning and photographing the session.

Our Volunteers: Cactuskitty, Smokedduck, Holydrummer, Holybro, Holybunny, Smart, Jems, liverpool, Champagne, sumosumo, toothangel and Amagada for helping out with all theother stuff.

Toothfairy and the Touch Soccer team for raising $1000 for the kid's goodie bags.

I would also like to thank our sponsors for making the event a great success!

For providing the meals for the kids as well as our guests. Astons has donated all proceeds to Oakley. A big thanks to all the staff of Astons who also volunteered their time to serve the us and the kids! LINK

Ieat 2nd Anniversary Charity Makan Session: Beta Testing the ieat SuperBurger MKII

Time flies! The blog is now coming to 2 years old and to celebrate, we are of course having a makan session. Last year, we celebrated our 1st Anniversary at Astons Prime and we managed to raise some money for the Andrew and Grace Home. This year I am trying to do something a little different with a direct impact on the people we are trying bless. I also wanted to do something that can be replicated with other restaurants who might also have a social marketing aspect to their business.

So we are working with Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC) this year with a group of kids from the Oakley Children Prison Ministry. FCBC run a prison ministry to help people in prison. In their communications with them, they realized that these people are all quite concerned about the well being of their own kids whom they are unable to care for while in prison. Some of these children actually live with their grandparents or aunties/uncles. So "Oakley" was set up in order to provide tuition for these kids as well as to organize activities for them and in a sense, to be an extended family to them.

What we are planning to do is to arrange for the kids to have a 3 course lunch at Aston's new restaurant at The Cathay (Handy Road) and teach them a little bit about dining etiquette, followed by a movie at Cathay. Since the restaurant can only hold 50 people and I know that there are a lot of ieat readers who are keen to contribute to this worthy cause, I have decided to split the session to two. So there will be an earlier session for the kids followed by the main makan session (where you all come in) that will start at 1pm where we will be "Beta testing" the ieat SuperBurger Mk II. Your feedback on the burger will eventually determine what the burger will look like! Aside from that I hope to be able to do an auction to raise money for the kids to buy assessment books, stationeries, etc.

Here are the details:

Venue: Astons Specialities (The Cathay 4th level)
Time: 1pm
Date: 17 August (Sunday)
Tickets: $80 (Suggested donation) Early birds will get a Movie Ticket!

Every ticket will be entitled to either an ieat SuperBurger Mk II or an alternative main course of beef, fish or chicken from the menu.

The Ieat Durian Degustation II: Ah Loon and Ah Teck's Boutique Durian Stall

The pictures say it all. When it comes to Durians, we Singaporeans will throw any manner of decorum to the wind. It is one of the few times that you can actually eat with your hands, get durian all over your face, and talk with your mouth full without mom telling you off. This is especially so when mom is also in the thick of things.

Yes, when it comes to durians, it is the fruit that is the main focus and nothing else matters. No one bothers that the tables are not cleaned, that you can throw the seeds into a dirty plastic box and it is permissible to stuff a whole durian segment in your mouth because you got to use your hands to open the durian. Do it with a chicken drumstick and everyone will be staring at you!

So it is when over 80 durian kakis gathered outside a provision shop to enjoy the fruit together. From Neurosurgeons to students, retirees to property developers, there are no social barriers when it comes to durian. The only criterion for admission is that you love the fruit.

The degustation session covered 5 varieties of durians that evening. We started with D24, then move on to Hong Xia, Black Pearl, XO, Golden Phoenix and finished up with the prized Mao Shan Wang. The characteristics of most of these have already been covered in my previous posts, so I will only highlight the Black Pearl which was voted best durian for the night.

The Black Pearl

The Black Pearl is easily recognizable by its elongated Rugby Ball shape which is something close to the heart of this ex-Saint/Rafflesian.

The flesh is is greyish white and most of them have little "pearls" of black in the flesh. The shape of the segments are also elongated and looks very much like those fried fish cakes. The texture is pastey and the aroma is only mildly pungent. However it is distinctly sweet with a taste that I find as difficult to describe as the colour Red.

The small size of the segment is offset by the tiny shrivelled seeds, so you still get quite a nice mouthful of flesh. I am told that is it best eaten by popping the whole segment into your mouth, spitting the seed out and then spend the next few minutes savouring the taste while swallowing a little at a time. 4.5/5

Conclusion

I think all our durian kakis went home very full and very satisfied that night and woke up this morning with Durian breath! Don't forget to drink lots of water everyone!
