Kok Kee Wanton Mee - Lavender FC
OK, this is one contentious Wonton Mee. Some forummers loved it, some did not think much of it. When I got there, there was this long queue of about 8 people at 2.30pm in the afternoon. What the heck, even if the makanguru eslim told me that it was not that great, I just had to try it for myself. My first impression, looking at the char siew, was not it was not impressive at all. Nothing like the Rowell Road Wonton Mee that everybody raves about with black sauce and all. Even the Char Siew was the "Boil in a Pot with with Red Dye" type.
See the guy with the backpack? He's from Taiwan. He told me that he came all the way from Taiwan to eat this Wonton Mee. Phwa, I am getting more curious. I asked the lady if they make their own noodles to which she replied "No, we buy from supplier". After a few questions, I am beginning to feel like George from the Seinfeld episode about the Food Nazi. These people take no nonsense, they are busy. I better behave or else I might have to disguise myself as a woman to buy a plate. Luckily the Der Fuhrur (Boss) was not around and I managed to get my Wanton Mee after 10mins.
I have to admit, that I quite like the noodles. It's not the char siew or the wonton, which are pretty lousy, but the sauce which was the winner. Mixed with the noodles, the sauce really combines well with the noodles.
This boiling cauldron of secret elixir has some sort of Gong Tau (addictive substance) which keeps its customers coming back again and again (Even from as far as Taiwan). Of course, the ladies did not know what was inside this addictive concoction. It's not even thick, its like a thin soup but it tastes great with the noodles. A welcomed departure from the wonton mee that uses tomato ketchup.
3.75/5 Some will like it, some will not. I like the taste of it, but at $3 for a small plate, I don't like the price and I certainly don't like it enough to queue behind 8 persons.

I tried the noodle once, and was quite disappointed with the small amount of noodle, miserly thin slice of pork and the small wonton. There is no green chilli to go with the wonton. I vow never to patronise the shop again.
But I have to agree with you in that the sauce is quite different others. It has a sweetness to it, but that is all to it.
Not a big wanton mee fan. Tried this b4, sauce is okay....but lacking that lard flavour i feel all decent wanton mee shld have. Char siew...good god, taste extremely bland.
The best wanton mee i tasted is this store in Keong Siak. The char siew is fantastic, duck and roast meat are very good.
Was voted the best wanton mee recently in papers.
I totally agree that this wonton mee stall is very very ordinary....don;t know what all the fuss and long line is all about.
yup, although the noodle is nice (because of the sauce), it's not worth the queue, and also the pathetic portion for that kind of price, is just not worth.
There are better wanton noodle elsewhere
i like the wonton mee at the taman serasi food court. there's a hongkong bbq/roast pork stall that sells wonton mee.
Hi,
You should try the wonton mee at Defence Technology Tower B canteen at Depot Road. It is very good and cheap. For only $2, you get three fried wontons and at least three wet ones.
Regards,
A happy DTTB worker
I disagree with previous comments. I think this stall sells the best wantan mee in Singapore. Maybe because I don really care about charsiew and always ask for wantan only. If wanna eat charsiew, wantan mee stall is not the place to go.
I agree the price is quite steep but it still beats all other wantan stalls here. Of course, still some way to go if compare to Malaysia la but well it's the best in Spore
Price has become $4 for quite a while already. From day 1, I jus cannot understand why my dad will spend min 20 mins q-ing for this. It's nice but I won't pay $4 and Q so long for this. And it's too oily! Char-siew's the normal kind somemore!
sbimbycat
price aside. i feel this is the best wan tan mee i have eaten. ever since i ate it, i cannot accept others. it's expensive. but i feel it's worth it. personal opinion.
I disagree with zebby, the char siew acts as a foil to the wantan. You should try the wantan noodle at Bt Merah View. The stall is hao doa ti and facing the road. Signboard is red word on yellow background.
Just order with wantan only. You never regret. The stall also sell sauce chicken noodle which I highly recommended to ieat. Hey ieat, like liverpool1965, my neck is on the chopping block, how about it?
OK Zhouzi, I take up your challenge. Are you able to meet me at the stall today? 2.30pm Let's see whether your head kena chop! Heh Heh
Sorry, ieat, thanks for the invite, but I am a worker bee not a retirebee though hope for it. Will try.
What else is good to eat at the Food Centre?
there is a malay food stall near the DBS ATM that has good mee soto and lontong. Next to it is a teochew porridge stall that is very popular as it always has a perpetual queue.
Guess what? They are closed today. Been closed for the last 3 days! Ended up eating at the wow wow west stall next door and discovered a really shiok BBQ chicken wing stall!
glad to hear you found the wow wow west was good, forgot to mention it in my last post. The chicken chop is good too and served in generous portions-chix, coleslaw, fries.
Man was not friendly though, when I asked him about the noodle stall, he replied that they did not inform him.
Sorry, ieat, missed meeting you. PM me?
Could you write to me and give me your handphone number?
i was having a craving for wonton mee tonight.. and was looking thru the old posts about wonton mee.
saw this one and couldnt help but comment..
this is one of the lousiest, overrated wonton mee conjobs in the entire world. i dunno why people queue for crap like this.
the noodles are soggy, the sauce bland soup and some chilli sauce, and the wonton and charsiew are the most anemic, miserly, pathetic wontons and charsiews in the entire world of charsiew and wontons...
1/5. 1 for the effort of cooking.
Did you finish the plate?
eaten there once and NO MORE.
i finished it simply because there is so little. finish in one mouth.
So it can be eaten and you are still alive. Surely that would rate more than a 1.5
Must reserve the 1 for eat and immediately die category. : P
2 = Only if I am dying of hunger and there is nothing else to eat
3 = Can eat lah but I wouldn't come back
3.5= Don't mind eating again

ya, dun understanding y people queue at tis stall..
it's really normal lor.. nothing more than tat..
i tried once but wun be going back again..
1.5/5 = somewhere between eat and die and eat only if dying of hunger, cos the queue will half starve me to death anyway...plus the small portions leaves me still hungry
0.5 - for noodles (at least its cooked)
0.5 - for ingredients (semblance of charsiew and wonton)
0.5 - for sauce (soup stock and chilli concoction)
1.5 total.
for $4,50, they are serving a pathetic portion that is even smaller than my school's canteen wanton mee..... Definitely would never ever go there again........
This wanton mee has its own appeal, like my girlfriend would swear by it but I don't feel its fantastic. To me, it's definitely not worth the wait. BTW, the queue is there not bcos many people are buying it but bcos the seller is slow in making the noodles. I think some queued up bcos of the herd instinct .....
Very small portion considering the amount we paid. The last i ate was 2 weeks ago and the noodles was soggy and doesnt taste nice. And it increased by $0.50,but the portion still remains unchanged.so i dont think i will go back again.
Just tried this stall 2 days back with my wife. Must admit the gravy tasted a little bit special.... but gosh, SGD3.50/4.50 for a bowl of wonton mee and not to mention SGD2.00 parking fee? hmmm....makes me wonder if I am overpaying for the hype and the excitement of joining the queue....
i love the wonton mee in this stall. i have been eating this since young and i've never found any other wonton mee as good as this in singapore!
everything in the wonton mee taste good. from the noodles, to the char siew, wonton and the soup! and how can anyone refute that the sauce is absolutely amazing! although it's rather pricey especially after it increased its price, i still find it worth every single cent.
i will be going to check out http://ieatishootipost.sg/2009/02/hong-mao-wanton-mee-i-dont-see-no-ang.html and see how good that is...
keep all the diff wonton mee reviews coming in, it has always been my favourite dish in singapore.
thanx and happy eating. ;)
hahaha...kennethjayden....you also kena the "gong tao" sauce...we are all wondering what goes into it that makes it so ggoooooodddd.....but the char siew is not that great lah....
wahcow, I'm poisoned by their "gong tao" sauce too.
Phwa lucky I only ate once so I still not addicted yet. But there was a guy when I was there who travel all the way from Taiwan just to eat the wanton mee.
ieat, you are so funny in this series of old posts about Lavender FC stall owners. happy cows indeed. there are still many who are passionate about their craft and insist on making from scratch, but the scent of the green bills and red bills and blue bills in our wallets oft lure some of the hold-hands to the dark side, aka kaki bukit factory.
about the gong tau sauce, i know they use healthy lashings of lard as a base base, then they ladle the gong tau sauce over the lard base. some say the water for the gong tau base comes from the chao praya river in bangkok and der furher (lady boss) is a devout 4-face buddha beliver.... ok ok i am joking. jus toking rot.
the noodle is the only good thing in this wanton.
i cant believe there are people saying the charsiew is great - it is not even grilled, is ultra thin and tasteless. the wanton is just all "skin" and no meat. those who comment good, you must have not tasted really good wanton AND charsiew mee.
Fortunately, I have eated at the stall for more than 3 times and the noodles turned out to be nice. It is a no-frills style of wanton mee. For those who are looking for dark sauce type, then it is not for you. There used to be a old lady selling good wanton mee at Jalan Berseh hawker centre too. Unfortunately she stopped selling after the hawker centre is renovated.
