Pasta Manna: Pasta at Hawker Prices Old Airport Road Food Centre Part 9 of 9

The great thing about Generation X is that this cohort of Singaporeans are bringing all great stuff that we grew up eating only in special restaurants to the hawker centre. We have already seen the likes of Basil Alcove, eBlackBoard and Astons, and we are bound to see more and more of such new generation hawkers springing up over the next few years. No longer will they offer a Chinaman's interpretation of Ang Moh food! No, these are guys who have lived overseas or have been trained in proper Western Restaurants and who are now bucking the system and providing authentic western cuisine at hawker centre prices!

At Pasta Manna, you can have a nice plate of stir fried spaghetti with meat balls in olive oil for just $3.90. And no, they have done away with pseudo Ang Moh stuff like sliced cheese and the $2 type chicken franks. They use real olive oil and real Italian style sausages!

Tastewise. Not bad. I would even venture to say that they are as good as the mid ranged Pasta restaurants like Pasta Fresca or Pasta Mania. 4/5

Meet David, your authentic Italian Chef!

Certainly worth a try the next time you are craving for some Pasta but only want to pay Hokkien Mee prices.

My friend SL,directed me to your blog raving about the pictures of food. I occasionally discuss food in my blog but not as in depth. I'm not very selective abot food but do enjoy eating with good company, such as SL and some very special people. Don't get a shock, I'm not as wild as my avatar may suggest, it's just a hobby (like yoga)and somewhat a job. Keep up the good work, i will definitely visit again when i need ideas on where to have good food

Hi, thanks for the review. That's my brother's stall :) Just noticed that opening hours should be from 12.30pm right?

There's actually some other great stall at this market. There is a satay stall at Old Airport Road Temp Food Market by a chinese couple which sells very nice satay. Weekends need to wait at least 30-45 mins. Its along the same row as the soursop drink stall.
Then there's the Lor Mee stall near the Nam Sing hokkien mee stall but i think its finishes selling in the afternoon.

I just saw this one, thought this to be similar to Mien, which I had tried three times. I disagree with you dumping pasta fresca and pasta mania togethere. They are not even in the same class. Pasta mania serves watery creamy pasta, which is not even al dente to speak of. Pasta fresca on the other hand, especially if you try their Pappardele, this is what I called AL DENTE. The real Italian Chef (Bukit timah branch) from Venezia if I'm not wrong. Their cream is not those diluted kind from Pasta Mania. In all aspect Pasta mania is many grade below Pasta Fresca, and is a poor man's pasta. But I do agree that mien actually tastes better than Pasta mania and more value for money. Pasta fresca? Out of reach for him. I think it is good that he offers value for money italian dining, but you can never compare authentic Italian Pasta to these. It's just an insult.

Hello

Went to PastaManna recently. Was a little disappointed though. The tomato base was quite nice, but the pasta (the CORE of the dish) was bad. As in, its not al dente, it does not even taste like its fully cooked. Maybe i just chose the wrong date...

Hobbit : What to do? $3.90 for a pasta? This doctor is promoting to let this kind of ang mo quality food flood our hawkers leh. Giam siap so sacrifice our food heritage.

glenda I think we all got your point. You are simply against any "foreign" food in our food centres PERIOD.. It is not phasing out but rather co-existing and they are there simply cuz there IS a rising trend and demand for all sorts of food cuz we are in 2008 and not in 1950s..... I strongly suggests you write in to appeal to the authorities to ban renting of food centre stalls to anyone who wishes to sell "foreign" if you feel so strongly that keeping such hawkers out of the food centre will be "preserving" the local food instead of lashing out to ieat and other forum readers here.
