sgkueh: Not Oni Orr Nee and Ondeh Ondeh! Amoy Street Food Centre Part 5 of 5

With ieatMaMa & iwatch_ueat

Fancy some restaurant style desserts like Orh Nee (Yam Paste) and Water Chestnut paste but don't necessarily want to eat the rest of the 7 courses? Help is on the way! You can head down to sgkueh at Amoy Street Food Centre and satisfy for craving! And along the way you will be tempted with the multitudes of different kuehs that this tiny stall manages to dish out everyday.

The most popular kuehs are the golden Ondeh Ondeh. Yes, you are right, Ondeh Ondeh is supposed to be green in colour. But this is the type that has not metamorphosized into the Incredible Hulk yet. The reason it is golden is that sgkueh emphasizes no artificial colourings in their kuehs and the skin is made from quality Indonesian Sweet Potatoes.

When you put the whole thing in your mouth and take a bite, that satisfactory explosion of gula melaka simply coats your buccal cavity with joy. Then you will notice something quite different. The texture of the skin is very soft and not as chewy as normal Ondeh Ondeh. It doesn't have that artificial pandan flavour, but instead it has the savoury flavour of sweet potatoes. I liked it but ieatMama commented that she still liked her Ondeh Ondeh skin chewy. $0.40 ea 4/5

If you like Durian, you have to try the Durian Ondeh Ondeh. It is a marvel how they managed to put fresh durian puree inside of that soft skin! Aside from getting that really shiok durian flavour, the skin adds an extra dimension of texture to the durian experience. $0.80 ea 4.5/5 (This one is addictive for Durian lovers but those who hate Durian (poor souls) would use it as paintballs/stinkbombs to throw at mortal enemies!)

This is what the stall first built its reputation on. The Orh Nee with caramalised pumpkin and Ginko Nuts. Health watchers will be pleased to know they use Canola Oil rather than Pork Lard in the Orh Nee and that it is not overly sweet. They are also introducing Sugar Free Orh Nee on Fridays and Saturdays!

Texturewise, it is pretty thick and substantial, not like the watery versions sold at some dessert stores. This one tastes as good or even better than some that I have tasted at restaurants. The pumpkins and Ginko nuts are done very well. For $2.50, this is really good value for money Orh Nee. 4/5 (Good and healthy, but if you want to a score 4.5 on a Orh Nee, its gotta be caramalised in a wok with Pork Lard!)

Another item I thought was pretty good was the Tapioca with Gula Melaka. They use very good quality and thick gula melaka and the tapioca is very savoury and powdery. 3.75/5

The problem I have at the stall is that they have so many unique items that I really don't have the stomach to try them all. Take for instance this Tau Suan Kueh, which is mung beans set in Water Chestnut Jelly, or the Red Bean Kueh in the background. This is like mobile Tau Suan and Red Bean soup yah?

There you go, all the different colours you see here represent a different flavour. They range from tapioca to mocha coffee to pumpkin and even Japanese Sweet Potatoes. Even if you come everyday for a month to taste one kueh, you still won't be able to taste everything.

Conclusion

New age dessert store (is it a dotcom company?) that is willing to experiment and provide tasty yet healthier desserts! Really good Orh Nee and unique Ondeh Ondehs and so many other things to try that you are sure to find something you like!

Disclosure: We were invited to taste the kuehs at their store by Michael Tan who is an ieatishootipost reader and a forummer. I knew about their Orh Nee from the forum and would have eventually blogged their store anyway. Thanks for the invite Michael and I hope the pictures do justice to your desserts!

This stall is real hot!!

just do a search on sgkueh and it got 5 pages of info on it.

it even got blogs as far as Korea
http://worldtown.naver.com/abroadinfo/unit_info.nhn?unit_no=402148.

If it's not the current icon of Amoy St Food Centre, it certain is one for the future.

Hi.. I went to the sgkueh outlet at Amoy Street last week to have my fill of good quality onde onde but was greatly disappointed by the vast drop in standard. The onde onde skin was unpleasantly thick and filling was minimal. Even worse off than those typical factory made ones. Really not worth 50cents a piece! And I even bought 6 pieces... Argh! Anyone here share the same sentiments?

i've tried the Orh Nee before and it's really yummy... but the price is a bit too high.

His Orh Nee is quite tasty by most standards except really good teochew restaurants but like Kelly said, most of his kueh are only so-so, especially his new creations which I think are just plain bad. When they first opened, I was a regular and most of the kueh were better but I guess like many famous stalls, quality suffers from too much fame and maybe rapid expansion. Maxwell, and in fact many other places has got better onde-onde and other kueh. The orh nee is the only thing worth trying IMO because it sold in smaller portions while teochew restaurants require you to order a min standard size to feed at least 6-10 people. I am not surprised that my overall opinion now has taken a turn for the worse, much worse. It has become a much hype stall that is high price, not value for money and definitely not worth the wait.

It does seem as if their standards have fallen since they opened their UBI branch. I hope Michael is reading all the feedback so that he can rectify the problems!

Do choose the "Other" button on the bottom of the page and give yourself a pen name!

Kelly, did u got back there after that? i was there a few times and it seems ok to me. still as yummy.

One negative comments here dun mean a thing, probably a competitor. The queue is still there everyday. U think all those ppl stupid or their tastebud numb?

Kelly said...

Nope, i'm definately not a competitor, just an unsatisfied customer! What's the point in voicing your opinion if people can't accept them with an open mind? I didn't go back after that disappointing experience.

i agree with Kelly in some ways...i've been eating the Ondeh for quite some time..but recently..i find the skin was thicker and more rubbery..and it doesn't have the burst of melaka in the mouth when i bite into it..

i tried their tapioca kuey and compare wif the Maxwell and I prefer the Maxwell one..

but the Amoy Ondeh is better than the Maxwell one..so each have their own plus pts!

yummywok,

Looks like you neither read (hint: queue & ONDEH correlation) nor count (hint: -ve comments) well.

I just hope Michael rectifies the quality of the ondehs and return it to the standard it so richly deserved previously.

IT IS THE WORSE SHOP I EVER SEEN. I have super bad experience with the boss MICHAEL. He is a super rude and attitute guy. With the worse customer services i ever seen. When we ordered the kuehs in the website, he told us that there is a change in the pricing and ask us to pay more for it. giving us excuses that he did not update his website. When we asked to cancel some of our orders, he actually told us "TO CANCEL THE WHOLE ORDER". We are his customers, he shldnt have told us off. I will never ever go back to his shop with these kind of customer service.

Kelly, I agree with you that the std had gone way way down. To get my onde onde and tapioca fix, I go to maxwell. As for the orh nee, I get it from Chen Jie two rows from here. The boss declared that he had removed lard from this dessert as he wanted to get halal certification. Yummywok the queue is there? could be the service was slow. Once I was 3rd in line but had to wait almost 10mins.

'was there two weeks ago on a sat morning, to get the ondehs. 'asked the auntie how much it cost, 'was taken aback when she said can't i see the price stated. of course i can see it, but there are like so many prices all over the shop, with tiny fonts too. nevertheless, i tried not to retaliate with rudeness and just politely ask for one. she was clearly not happy about it and in the most bo chap manner shove the ondeh to me, bear in mind i was the only person there, no queue behind me. my my goodness gracious!! if so grudgingly to sell kueh, close it down lar.

This stall really attract a lot of controvesies. this shows wat people can do under the coverage of anonymity. just bombard a stall like crazy, maybe using different names or nicks.

how can a stall which has beeb raved by some maybe media and stil is, have their standard go down all the way? Maybe it might be true that a chef might get his "off" days once a while due to mood or problems watever, but to have the whole standard goes down all the way and at the same time, still drawing rave review and stall still having long queue....

something a big question mark.

The critic involve did not mention a particular kueh but seems to imply that everything there had their standard drop. is it possible?

at the same time, we can see more and more new and yummy things coming up, like the soon kueh, ang ku kueh, durian crepes

really interesting....

maybe most of their clients dun have computer at home.
