Soyako Bean Curd Bukit Timah Food Centre Part 5 of 5

Nowadays, I am a bit spoit when it comes to bean curd. With more and more stalls starting to make their own bean curd on the premises, the factory made bean curd has (for me at least) become what Kong Guan Bao is to Handmade Paus. If there are two bean curd stalls at the same food centre selling bean curd, and one is freshly made, I would gladly pay the 40 cents more for a bowl.

What I like about freshly made bean curd is that the texture of the beancurd is usually finer and smoother than the factory made version. This one is no exception. The texture is really smooth and it does not taste watered down. Nowadays they don't need to use plaster of paris anymore. There are new chemical additives that they can use to turn soyabean milk into beancurd (like fruit pectin). The ginko nuts were all freshly prepared with the bitter bit in the middle removed. Quite Shiok after all that food that we ate. 4/5

They are very generous with the peanuts in the peanut soup here. The Ah Balling are also (I am told) handmade at home. 4/5

Hmmms did you try the other soya beancurd and soya bean milk stall at the first row (right at the end)? I stay in Bukit Timah and usually see that it has more customers as compared to Soyako.

Soyako was the one recommended by my friend. Perhaps other readers can share their experience with the two bean curds? Which one is better?

There is a problem with the date and time stamp. I have changed the format and I hope it works

IMHO, Soyako is not good at all. I had the soya bean drink from Soyako and the one jazynn mentioned and I couldn't make out any difference in taste. The only difference, The stall selling the Denon(Tian Long) bean curd stuff sells it for $0.70 while Soyako one goes for $1.00!!

Soyako's beancurd was a major disappointment. Smooth and melts-in-your-mouth it is not. In fact far from it. My benchmark is the Rochor beancurd from Geylang Lor 19. I wouldn't waste my dollar again.

One thing i couldn't figure out is, why bean curd is $1, and the drink also $1... What i believe is drink tend to be cheaper than curd, but this stall is not.

Me and my beancurd enthusiats were there to try. Frankly we found the ah balling more appealing than the beancurd. The beancurd is hard as compared to the one by Rochor. When you place it in your mouth, it is as if you can bite it instead of it melting. This stall simply didn't work for me.

the ah balling is not handmade. enough said. i ate there and saw the packets of empty instant ahballing. hah. plus, being a shop specialsing in beancurd... i expected them to be able to estimate the right amt of syrup to put in my soya drink. but nope. tooooo much syrup. disappointing!

I have never liked soya bean milk or beancurd so I decided to give this a try. AND I LOVE IT! The beancurd is soft and smooth. I also love the ginko nuts. Will definitely go back for more. Thanks for the recommendation! :)

Sorry to say this, the standard is not there. So much raves abt it, but sadly, the beancurd is not soft and silky. It is hard compared to the good ones. And being a good soyabean curd stall, u wld expect them to know how much syrup to add to ure drink. Nope. They added so much sugar to mine, i couldnt taste the soyabean. Disappointing. My recommendation wld be beancurd city.

In addition to my comment above, they use instant ah balling. I saw them throwing away the packaging. THE HOLY!!! Above-ave price for under-ave food.

hi anonymous where is beancurd city? :)

I must agree. The stall soyako is disappointing. I prefer Rochor Beancurd House at Geylang lor 39. A lot of good reviews can be found online. I heard that shop is the founder shop that is why is so good. The youtiao and grass jelly is my family first choice too.

Just surf the net and got more information about the Rochor Beancud HOuse. 24 Hour. Run by the eldest brother who is voted the best beancurd by makan sutra and Straits Time Food Critic Pauline Teo.
