Leong Kee Bak Kut Teh: Klang Style BKT anyone?
With Camemberu, liverpool, iwatch_ueat and Tag
The Malaysians may insist that Bak Kut Teh is invented in the Klang Valley, but as you know in my last article, I wrote that Bak Kut Teh was actually invented in Singapore by the Teochews at Clarke Quay. Actually if you think about it, how these two stories can be reconciled may be quite simple. I think that the concept of boiling pork bone soup is quite generic and they probably do it commonly in South China. I mean it doesn't take a genius to dream up boiling pork bones does it? Then when our forefathers came to Singapore and Malaysia, they brought the concept with them but changed the recipe to suit the local needs. The Cantonese like to use herbs in their soup, so the Klang version features much more herbs then the Teochew version which uses pepper and garlic. Sounds plausible does it not? (This is my own theory and not from some history book)
Anyway, we wanted to feature a Klang style BKT, so we tried this quite well known one along Beach Road.
We found the soup to be a little bitter rather then sweet and aromatic that day. It lacked the oooomph expected of a good BKT. The pork ribs though were very nice and tender. 3.75/5
Not only I say only yah? My makankakis, Camemberu, liverpool, Tag and iwatch_ueat also say.
BUT this place does have a really good Ter Kah that is to die for (literally). Soft, sticky, sweet and savoury, the fats and tendons melts in your mouth and I can feel it go directly into my coronary arteries. Phwa, very shiok but not something you want to admit to your cardiologist on your follow up visit after coronary bypass surgery.
Definitely one of the better Ter Kahs I have had in Singapore! Great with a bowl of rice and make sure you drink lots of strong tea to wash it all down. 4.25/5
The stewed peanuts here are worthy of special mention. They were stewed till really soft and sweet and has enough umami make you keep eating it. Nice, very nice. 4.25/5
Conclusion
It has been reported that the soup here can be inconsistent. Maybe we just went on a bad day for the BKT. The Ter Kah and peanuts still managed to get me to expend my calories for the day.

I thought ter kah tendons are good for our tendons too. Are they that fattening?
Yes the tendons give you collagen, but the fats are bad for you. Ter Kah has both. So the trick is to eat only the tendons and not the fat! Need to know a bit of Porcine Anatomy. He he
Mmmh...for some strange reason, I still feel like going back to try it again. To see if the bak kut teh soup tastes different on a separate occasion. Or maybe I should try the Bedok one instead.
Ok will definitely drop by to sample this when I pass by this area!
had tried it before.. it's quite good! =)
i find it a bit different from e normal kind of BKT tat we usually eat.. maybe becos of e fu pi added in e soup
Tried the BKT yesterday. the soup is the thick kind..not the peppery soupy kind. Hmm...Prefer the peppery soupy kind... :)
They used to have a branch at Hee It coffeeshop at Sin Ming but only lasted 4 months.
Now a char kway teow stall has taken over it and guess what? I just realised that he was the understudy of the famous Lakeview Char Kway Teow boss many moons back (now located in Shunfu Mart FC).
The CKT is much better than his master (IMHO) and the white version is one of the better ones around.
Only opened in the evenings.
ah.. good good good.. i din know tat shunfu mart got so many "hidden treasures" there.. this weekend i'll go try it when i go to my boyfriend's place
Hi Khim,
The Shunfu Mart CKT (Lai Heng) dropped standard liao. His understudy is located at Hee It coffeshop at Sin Ming along the Hong Kong Street Chun Kee stretch.
But you could try the Fish Slice Soup next to Lai Heng CKT at Shunfu Mart for great Promfet Fish Slice & Egg Roe soup.
Damn Shiok!
okie, thanks Damien!
i'm sure my boyfriend will be more than happy to bring me eat at coffeshops n hawker centres (as i always complain i smell like a walking food court!) =p
i'll try out this weekend!
there's another leong kee at a coffeeshop at geylang lor 13 which i feel is much nicer...there's always a massive queue...
i've tried the beach road branch but also found it's not as good...
Oh that looks SOSOSOSO delicious!
Hi I'm a Malaysian and this would only rate 6/10 out of my Klang-style Hokkien herby BKT. The "Ter Kar" is also just alright for my taste - no big fuss.
Tried it today
Generous portions, good quality meat, good texture, but a bit bitter rather than herby and somehow lacks oomph that a good Klang version should have. 6-7/10
Ter Ka was very nice with no bones and lots of lean meat. But I have had better (Garden St Kway Chap when they were in Blanco Ct). 8+/10
hi,
talked to the boss. apparently the best time to try the soup is when they juz open, contrary to other soupy dishes.
this is because the herbs are brewed to perfection right at the start, hence as the day progresses, the soup does tend to overload on the herb factor since they've been simmering in the broth the whole day.
The one in GL closed / re-located already, anyone know where is the new location?
there's one outlet at Jalan Besar! Hard to say the exact location, but its at a small coffeeshop opposite the market there! near the block of white HDB flats you know?
Tried it, soup was quite good. Definitely canot compare with the stalls in Malaysia, but probably the best Klang style BKT in Sg? Maybe because I havent found any other klang style one's around..
