Xin Long Cooked Food: The Alternative to a Homecooked Meal!

With smart, iwatch_ueat and carnineviand

I always find it difficult to write about "Economic Rice" because there is always so many dishes in each stall and there is no standard items that you can compare "apples with apples". So what I have done is to ask the Lao Ban Niang to give me a plate to that would showcase her best stuff.

I don't know about you, but I find that when I eat "Economic Rice", I always end up ordering much the same dishes which will invariably include a sweet and sour pork and a braised tofu dish. So this particular meal is a departure from my usual fare.

Another thing about Economic Rice is that I actually eat it when I feel that I need to eat something "wholesome" which equates to home cooked food. And home cooked food equates to rice with one or two meats and some veggies. I think that is quite a commonly held practice amongst Singaporean Chinese which is why the Army also provides this sort of staple.

The food here is very good and overall, I feel that it has flavour without tending to be over oily. Of special mention is the Ngor Hiang here which is one of the best Ngor Hiang I have ever eaten. Funny to find an outstanding Ngor Hiang in a Economic Rice stall rather than a Ngor Hiang stall! The shiok thing about it is that almost one third of the Ngor Hiang is made of sweet, crunchy water chestnuts. Worth coming just for the Ngor Hiang. The curry chicken was mild, creamy and very yummy. Not as special as the Ngor Hiang but definitely very competent.

Conclusion

Overall, the food here is great which explains the constant queue. The good thing about it is that you really do feel that it is something that mom might whip up at home. (assuming your mom is an excellent cook) Great place to visit for some tasty home cooked food. 4.25/5

Yeah, i visit this stall since i was around 7 (i'm 16 now and visit it 3 times a week).. Great place to dine whenever Mum's not cooking. =D

This, together with Kallang Fish Soup as well as the Katong Curry Puff beside the Fish Soup, is a must-try for my family @ MParade!

Oh, there are also a HKM stall named Ah Liang Fried HKM behind the Fish Soup stall. You may want to give it a try too! =)

Apollo Char Kway Tiao is quite popular too.

But don't watch him cook if you still want to keep your appetite. :(

Beside the Ngor Hiang ieat forgot to mention the 'kantang balls' which is very good too.Mr. Happy you can try the Economic Rice stall next to your favourite fish soup/curry puffs stalls. To me their best is the Indonesian chicken (drier form),but they dont serve this everyday.

The hokkien mee is not bad..though i find that it lacks that punch. Old airport rd still better. The apollo char kway teow is the soggy type because he uses alot of seafood stock. I prefer my ckt dry and oily but i still found this one very nice. Taste very rich.

The food may be good, but the thing is that ist is almost always cold, as they have no warmers, not a good thing

Hey Leslie, yeah agree with anonymous, the food is sometimes cold.

But being a regular at Xing Long's

Besides the Ngoh Hiang, you might want to try the potato cutlet and the fish cutlet (They claim its cod, but its not...still tastes good anyway)

Another tip is to drench your rice in curry, it will make it nicer!

There is one in TPY Lor. 7 FC, Liang Heng I think. For $2, you get to choose 2 meat, 2 veggie and rice or 1 meat, 1 fish, 2 veggie and rice. Very difficult to find such cheap and good food nowadays.

I've tried this stall a few times, I tot they were quite expensive. I would prefer the ones in redhill mkt.

ieat, I'ld buy you lunch (redhill) if you're free next week.

Yeah, the ngoh hiang is a die die must eat thing at Xin Long. But I think it's a bit too pricey..

Do try the braised mushrooms! I like! (:

I think the fried chicken wing is a die die must makan item at Xing Long. Very well marinated and though not the crispy skin type, still well fried and fragrant in smell and taste. I just saw a lady ta bao twenty over wings the other day leaving none for me and the others behind. Lucky, auntie chef decided to fry another batch for us.
