Golden Horse Roast Meats: More like Golden Pegasus!

I don't know about you, but I don't really think much of the typical BBQ chicken wings. I generally feel that most of them are too conservative. What I look for in a good BBQ chicken wings is that sticky sweet and spicy caramelized glaze that gives you that eye opening oooomph when you bite into it. A few years back, there was this particular stall along Zion Road which sells the most shiokalicious wings and Char Siew. But sadly, they moved out and last I heard, they have retired. I have since been searching high and low for beloved BBQ chicken wings.

That is why I am so excited to have found this "undecorated" stall while searching for something to eat at Bukit Merah View Food Centre. They don't seem to have a lot of wings or Char Siew on display but the wings looked so good, I just had to give one a try. Phwa! Phwa phwa phwa! I found it, I found it! These spicy sweet chicken wings will sure hit the spot if you have just spent the last week preparing for your cholesterol test and have just gotten a good result. The glaze is sticky and sweet and has just the right amount of spiciness to give you that zing when you bite into the juicy and succulent meat. Of course I had the fortune of eating it when it was just taken out of the oven! I could easily down half a dozen of these before going for the Char Siew! 4.5/5

Now, this little shop is what I would call a boutique Roast Meat stall. By "boutique" I mean that they only make a small amount everyday and the owner lovingly glazes each item till it is cooked till perfection. It was just a thrill to see how much effort went into glazing the few strips of Char Siew and then putting it back into the oven, then pulling out the wings, glazing them, putting them back in the oven, then taking out the Char Siew again...........

The Char Siew is unsurprisingly, also very very shiok. Apart from the sticky glaze, the texture of the meat is also very different. By using pork collar meat and controlling the roasting process to perfection, they managed to get the texture of the meat to almost a "fishball" like consistency. The meat is really chewy and tender at the same time! Excellent Char Siew! 4.5/5

Conclusion

Totally and unexpectedly delighted. This stall has been around for over 20 years, but there is hardly any write-ups displayed on their stall front. Just looking at the one white chicken, 2 roast chicken, 4 charsiew and one rack of chicken wings, one can be forgiven to just pass on by. But boy was I sure glad I took the chance and tried one of their chicken wings. It's a real gem of a find!

I always eat at this stall when i go to Bukit Merah Food centre ;) Finally someone noticed them. The auntie serving is really nice too :) I seldom eat char siew as i prefer roast pork, but this is 1 of the very few char siews that i will eat.

Any other places that you always eat at that should be noticed?

I know the Zion Rd Char Siew Stall you're talking about. It used to be in the corner coffeeshop opposite the food centre! My wife and I used to get our chix wing and char siew fix there until they closed down. They used to serve their char siew with chix rice.... made the dish really fragrant. We've been looking for a similar stall after they retired, but to no avail.... sigh....

Now that you've mentioned Golden Horse we'll definitely go by to have a try. Tks!

The Zion Rd stall you speak of was called Hao Hao Ji Fan. It was my mecca for the better part of 2 years. Me and my buddies would make an almost daily pilgrimmage to the place during our NS days. Then we all went overseas for work or studies and when we returned, the place was closed! Imagine our horror and disappointment.... The chicken wings and char siew there had that lovely burnt caramelized taste we all dream of. And the auntie was a real gem, sometimes we would have not enough cash or just outright forget to pay and she would willingly take payment the next time we came round. How would this Golden Horse Roast Meat compare? Are the chicken wings equally as good?

Well that Aunty would have scored 4.75/5. It has that extra ooomph. Remember how she used to always quote the prices in the hundreds and thousands of dollars? Like a plate of char siew rice would cost $400 instead of $4?

Yeah, the first time I was introduced to the place was back in 1996 when I was finishing off my NS disruption service. A guy we call the Foodha brought us there to it. Hooked on it on the first bite.

I wish they were still selling their food! :(

Actually what would be good is that more BBQ Chicken Wing sellers offer this type of Spicy Sweet BBQ Wings. If anyone can convince their fav BBQ chicken Wing stall to start selling these, let me know and we blog it ok? They are really good when eaten piping hot.

*drooooling* I had been hooked just looking at the pic of the char siew, making a beeline there today to check it out ;).
ieat, i agree, I had pass by this stall umpteen times for lunch and mentally dismiss it when I saw the few items hanging forlornly. Not something to whet one's appetite. Big mistake.:P But making up for lost time.

I couldn't quite recall the stall's name from your blog so was contemplating whether to order a small portion or not from this stall that looked really dingy and to just have teochew porridge only today. Guess have to wait til next time round to try

Tried this recently. A real pity the chicken wings were sold out. But the char siew was a real disappointment. It was kinda pale-looking and nothing to shout about. I'd still love to try the chicken wings though.

The ABC Fatty-something char siew is still the best I tried. So far.
