I was at ABC Brickworks eating at Fatty Cheong's when I happen to bump into one of our blog readers, Tarzan (cos he's married to Jane) who also happened to be eating at Fatty's. However, I noticed that he had a plate of Wanton Mee which was from another stall, so I asked him if he thought it was good enough to be featured on the Blog. Not willing to put his Tarzan underpants on the line, he merely said it was the 2nd time he was eating there in a fortnight. OK Tarzan, let's see if this Wanton Mee has got that "Orh Yi Orh Yi Orh" or not.
The stall was operated by this friendly elderly couple (which I have a soft spot for) who have been operating the stall for over 20 years. They proudly showed off their trophy which they won for "Best Food Stall - Henderson Junior College". Since when was there a "Henderson" Junior College? After chatting with them for a while, I found out that they were at Anderson Junior College from 1985 to 1999, selling their wanton mee and also rice dishes. I think that AJC alumni should be quite glad to find your long lost Aunty and Uncle eh? Time to go back and pay them a visit, and tell them about how you all have progressed and how many kids you have!
Now, I remember that RJC used to have a killer Nasi Padang stall way back in the 80's. Anyone know where they went? The one Hawker that I would desperately like to find is that Char Kway Teow man from St Andrew's School in the 70s and 80s. That would really bring back fond memories!
So, if you all know about any of your favourite hawkers who have subsequently left your school canteen to set up their own stall, do write in to let us know!
This old couple still take pride in serving up quality noodles at School Canteen prices. No kidding, at $2 per plate, this has got to be one of the cheapest Wanton Mee in town. And they don't skimp on the quality or quantity either. They use a full egg noodle which are thinner than usual. It is the type that "Hong Kong" wanton mee is supposed to be. The Home-made charsiew is tender and quite generous and you get three good sized Wantons. Being "Hong Kong" style, they don't add tomato sauce, but instead have a specially brewed anchovy based sauce. The texture of the noodles were excellent, and although the Char Siew still cannot compare with Fatty Cheong's, they were still quite competent. 4/5
Conclusion
Great value for money Wanton Mee and a "Must Visit" for AJC alumni, I should think!

Im not sure if its e same Char Kway Teow uncle. But i graduated from St Andrew's Primary in 1996. Remember e stall is at e corner of e tuckshop. Whips up a delightful plate of CKT for a mere 40 cents!! Umami delicious.. :p
oh man. you bring back memories. i am an ajcian. i remembered their western food and wanton mee. i will definitely visit to bring back those days. aahhh.

This stall used to be my (and all my classmates) fav stall when we were in JC. Thank you for finding this wonderful stall again!
However, their most popular dish is not wanton mee but rather Chicken and Rice.(Rem to tell Auntie to add egg as well, somehow their egg just tastes better than your normal egg haha) You should also order their "suan la" soup which is excellent as well.

Seriously.... its the best of its kind... but i think he is the only person who fry this dish "Chicken and Rice"!!!!!

Anyone one knows where the Mee Goreng stall from St Michaels Pri School (84-89) went too?
I remembered pre-ordering it every Wednesday before school starts so i could have a headstart for lunch. A portion at $1 (my entire day's allowance), it was freshly fried and included the works.
Salivating thinking about it now :)
they no longer sell sour hot soup nor chicken and rice
when i asked them, they just said they dun cook it anymore
wonder if we can "group" together and get them to cook it? maybe on each wed of the week blar blar

Should also try their fried wantan when you are there. 50 cents more gives you around 6 more fried wantan. And if you order the $2 fried wantan, its a nice side dish for everyone to share...

You should really try to persuade them to cook their hot and sour soup and their famous chicken and rice for you. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed!!!
I am really serious about it and just thinking of their chicken and rice drives me crazy. Its really that unbelievably good.

My sister and her friend went to try the Ayam Penyet at ABC. They don't really like it and prefer Ayam Penyet Ria at Lucky Plaza.
I don't know if it is this aunty & uncle but when I was at AJC during those years, they mk a very sor-lid Fried Hong Kong Mee.
OMG! I have been searching for this wanton mee stall for the longest time! Graduated from AJC 15 years ago... probably forgot most of what the teachers have taught but did not forget how the wanton mee tasted. I always ask to add the vegetarian crispies to my wanton mee!

was in ajc from 1997 to 1998 and i basically grew up on their famous chicken and rice and suan la tang.
am gonna pay them a visit asap! :)they look like they have aged alot though...

i was looking ard for it ever since leaving AJC. 98-99 batch, so damn lucky they left when my batch grad. man miss the chicken n rice......the chicken soup and suan la soup is also a must try! thks for finding them back!
OMG!!!! u found it??? I leave near there and have been eating in ABC yet i did not see them! (although somehow the auntie looks diff... haha!)
I could only taste the chicken and rice for a year before they shifted and really, they provided some of the best memories of AJ!!!!
it was so funny when i tried to order it on the first day of sch (cos chicken and rice dont sound right!) so i told auntie in chinese that i want Ji (chicken) he (and) Fan (rice)!
and really, they eggs they make taste so good that there is no way you can replicate or eat elsewhere! guess u have to be an AJCian to understand!

I had this few days back. and at $2 the portion was more than decent~ Like the soft yet lean char siew and noodles and wantan were very old school and yummy too :)

According to the latest season of Makan Places Lost & Found, this stall had moved to another location. But believe it or not, it moved yet again between the time of filming the episode and the actual screening date. The producers had edited the footage to show the new address, but it flashed by too fast for me to note it down. Think it's somewhere in Toa Payoh Lor 4. :-) Jems, you got their new address?
OK, I've just did some more research and found a comment on a blog entry (http://sparklette.net/archives/50s-wanton-mee/) saying they have moved to the Lor 7 Toa Payoh market. And they have renamed themselves to "50s Wanton Mee". Is there anybody staying nearby? Can go verify please? :-)
Thanks for reminding me about the char kway teow man from St. Andrews in the 70s and 80s. My grandma used to bring an egg from home and he would fry it at no extra charge. He would also fry the egg sunny side up if you request and if there is not much of a queue.
Hi, just went to eat at the 50s-wanton mee at the Toa Payoh Lor 7 Hawker center. Confirmed that its AJC chicken and rice auntie and uncle! However, they are no longer selling chicken and rice because it seems that its not very popular with the outside crowd. But i don't get it, chicken and rice is really good and their sambal chill is a killer! Chong Herng, graduating batch of AJC 1997
