Poh Cheu: Ang Gu Kueh Sio Sio

With liverpool and iwatch_ueat

Ah Mah Tng (Ah Mah Long)
Ah Mah Teh (Ah Mah Short)

Ah Mah Tau Chia Ang Gu Kueh
(Ah Mah ate Ang Gu Kueh without permission)

Ang Gu Kueh Sio Sio (Ang Gu Kueh Hot Hot)

Jia Liao Tio Beh Pio (After eating sure win the lottery)

I could never understand why people make such a big fuss about Ang Gu Kueh. Just what is so nice about this Kueh that Ah Mah needs permission to eat it? And the other thing I don't understand is, why does the rhyme say that Ang Gu Kueh must be eaten hot? I have never eaten a hot Ang Gu Kueh, have you?

And then I found out what a Sua Gu (Mountain Tortoise) I was. I only just realised that Ang Gu Kueh literally meant "Red Tortoise" Kueh. Yes, the Red Tortoise finally revealed its true meaning to this Mountain Tortoise. Indeed it does look like a tortoise shell! Why Red? Well, the Kuehs are traditionally given out during baby's first month celebrations, so Red denotes prosperity and Tortoise is a symbol of long life. Like I said, I am a big Sua Gu. Am I the only one or is this a revelation to you too?

Anyway, I am the latest Ang Gu Kueh convert after having tasted this one. OOoooh, they are really generous with the peanut filling and it was really very shiok. The skin is thin, soft and chewy and was a nice contrast to the gritty peanuts. Although the traditional Ang Gu Kueh is made from mung bean paste, I prefer the peanut version. Maybe its just because I am nuts about peanuts. 4.5/5

The Soon Kuehs here are pretty famous too. The skin is soft and slippery and the filling has enough of the Hae Bee (dried prawns) flavour. Liverpool, our chilli masochist, specially mentioned that the chilli sauce was especially hot and shiok. 4.25/5

Conclusion

Looks like I have just started my Ang Gu Kueh trail! Any particular stalls to recommend?

for nonya style bean filling ang koo kueh, i will go to the upper thomson road akk shop. the problem is this shop opens at 11am and you may have to place your order in advance. for peanut filling, i will go to the same coffee shop that boasts the hua fong kee roast duck at blk 124 toa payoh lor 1. it seems this toa payoh akk stall was originally from bt merah.

Ay Offspring, you mean you really never heard of this? Phwa where have you been?

The rest of it is:

Tio Jik Bah, Hor Lang Pah (strike one hundred let people slap)
Tio Jik Cheng, Hor Lang Jeng (strike one thousand let people punch)
Ah Mah Kah Chng Ang Ang (Ah Mah backside red red)

Its a classic!

akk when eaten hot, the skin is damn soft, very nice. usually when cold for a long period of time, the skin really hardens.

I am not an Ang Ku Kueh fan so if I have to eat, I must eat the best. I have tried Poh Cheu, Hougang Ave 3, Everton Park and felt that they are ok. Houngang was a disappointment. The best I have tried is home made by a lady, Janice Ng. You have to call her daughter-in-law, Peggy at 6457 4238 and order in advance. Hers is really good. The skin texture is first-class and it comes in 4 flavours - Peanut, Coconut, Bean and Yam. Friends and relatives have tried and they call agree that it is the best Ang ku Kueh they have eaten. I simply love the peanut and coconut. This is truly above all.

Actually I've not heard of this version. The one chanted along the streets of Telok Ayer St (for that was where I grew up in) refers to you char kway.

Which makes much more sense to me!

anyone tried the AKK in Amoy St's sgkueh?

their durian AKK is real power, make of real durian fresh unlike others that comes with tau sar with durian essence.

In addition to other flavours, they also have pineapple filling and savoury peanut filling

Oh I'm not really a fan of ang ku kueh, not one for sweet stuff but I saw that portion you did on soon kueh and it got me drooling! (Yes, I admit I'm one for savoury food)

You should try the traditional Yong's teochew kueh, the one at upper serangoon road. That one is really good, I love their ku chye kueh and their cabbage kueh. They have several other outlets if I'm not wrong.

Anyways, all the best and hope to see more traditional Sg flavours coming up!

Hi, my family and I first came across this stall a few years ago after having claypot laksa in the vicinity. I've been wanting to go back but always seem to go too late. So, I'm happy to see that you got to taste and share. I like their suan pan zi (abacus seeds) too!

There's a store here that makes ang ku kueh fresh everyday. The mung bean one is just perfect - and they have a few other varieties that my colleagues swear by. Personally though, I stick to the sweet or salty mung bean ones. Their peanut paste is ground rather finely so you may not get as much crunch out of it.

I don't remember the stall name but you can't miss it walking along the front of this block.

Not an AKK fan but Ji Xiang at Everton is good. I like the peanut fillings. I love this other kueh stall in Blk 85 Bedok North (where the famous Bak Chor mee is at). The stall 'Lao Chen'~ they have very good 'ku-chai' kueh & yam kueh. Freshly hand-made. Open at 7am till ?? (until sold-out). Do check it out!
