Vittles: Excellent Diner for the Whole Family!

Special Promo for ieatishootipost readers! Details at the end of the blog

Moo Moo II Burger $10.90 250gm beef pattie

This little diner up North is going to put a smile on many faces. It's the latest "Value for Money" diner which has recently opened in Sembawang barely 2 months ago and judging from the quality of the food and the prices, I can only say that it has all the qualities of another Astons in the making.

Just take a look at the Moo Moo II Burger. For $10.90, you get a big and juicy 250gm, hand chopped beef pattie, sauteed mushrooms and onions, crispy bacon, tomato and lettuce in a really nice oat meal crusted burger bun!

Truth be told, this is the ieat new improved version of the original Moo Moo Burger. I told Chef Julius that what I would really like to have is not just another burger but one that is going to get people talking. So he went to the kitchen with a few new ideas and whipped up the burger shown in the picture. He liked it so much that he told me that he will henceforth be serving the new improved version.

I really like beef patties where the meat is not so finely ground such that you can still bite into the meat fibres. The pattie was big and juicy and just needs a bit more tweaking to get the full beefy flavour out of it. I like the big soft bun which readily absorbed the juices of the meat pattie and the tangy BBQ sauce which gave it a nice balance. At $10.90, this is probably one of the best value burger in town! 4.25/5

Parmesan Coated Fish Fillet $7.90

The Parmesan Coated Fish Fillet came as a very pleasant surprise. The Parmesan cheese gave the Pacific Dory fillet a nice savoury flavour which is a very nice departure from the more familiar bread crumbs. The fish was cooked to perfection. Nice and juicy on the inside and crumbly on the outside. It went really well with the zesty homemade tomato salsa. 4.5/5

Emperor Oriental Chix Salad $6.90

If you enjoy Lo Hei (Raw Fish Salad) because of all the crunchy bits and salad rather then the raw fish itself, then you are going to like the Emperor Oriental Chix Salad where instead of raw fish, you have shredded chicken. I just love the crunchy crackers with the the tangy sweet salad dressing. 4.25/5

Vittles is an excellent place for family meals as they have stuff that the kids will love. Their Nachos are freshly fried and served with minced beef and cheese sauces. I usually prefer my nachos with melted cheese on top but my kids like it this way. 4/5

Pistachio Herb Crusted Lamb Rack $18.90

Chef Julius makes all the sauces and sides here himself and very few items actually come out of a packet. He makes the red wine sauce from scratch and even the mashed potatoes are made from real potatoes. You get a choose from 11 different home made side dishes. My personal favouriet was the creamy gratinated potatoes.

The Pistachio Herb Crust on the Lamb Rack is very addictive. I just couldn't stop nibbling on it with the red wine sauce. However, the lamb was frozen not chilled lamb, so it was not has juicy. But at $18.90, one can't really expect them to serve up chilled lamb rack. Still it was a delicious lamb rack that lamb lovers should try. 4.25/5

Conclusion

It was an invited review, so I was apprehensive at first. But it turned out to be a most wonderful lunch for the whole family. The kids loved the free popcorn that you can help yourself to as you are waiting for the food as well as the nachos and fries. The diner is run by 3 sisters and Chef Julius, so the service was very personal. Food is great value and on top of that, there is no GST or service charge. I think this place is poised to do very well.

ieat said...

I gave 4.25 for the beef burger because it was the first attempt. I think after they tweak it a bit, it should be a 4.5

Interesting to noe that it is so cheap...will definitely find a day to go down and try...heard from friends that their prime sirloin is good too.

Dr Leslie...well taken the photos...

ieat said...

Hi Jasper, unfortunately they do have pork dishes.

Their baby back ribs $15.90 is pretty shiok too and has enough of the soft bones.

Dude.. I really dig your style of food photography. Do you have a blog on tips? eg do you use flash for all your shots? Do you post-process?..etc

Keep up the good work.

ieat said...

No I don't have a blog on tips unfortunately. Post processing is normally done with digital photos.

Oliver&Kate

Have you tried Hog's Breath Cafe at CHIJMES? They have Sunday Brunch where a kid eats free with every adult main course ordered. They also have a "Pig Pen" where they have a toys, TV, etc and a "nanny" to watch the kids while you eat. Food's not bad and the kids stay occupied....

Hi there.... we went to try after reading your recommendation... do note that the moo moo buger is ONLY valid on weekends... we were quite disappointed that we could not get to try it when we visited the place... after such a long journey there :(

The Parmesan Coated Fish Fillet was nice... the fish was fresh.

Pistachio Herb Crusted Lamb Rack... have to agree that the crush is nice....

Do take note... 50% off is only for weekdays... the free Tropical Crush is only for weekends...

ieat said...

Thanks for your feedback moo moo. I have clarified the matter with Denise. She will now make the Tropical Crush available on weekdays as well. The Moo Moo Burger will be made available on weekdays from next week onwards.

Hope to hear the feedback from the rest of readers who have already been there!

wasn't too impressed with the place...food was alright only...can't come close to Aston's...so sad, just when I thought the North side had some hope...

curious said...

Went and tried the food...Dr Tay, you are right about the fish...realli nice and fantastic...the place is vibrant with Green and Orange...

I can say that their steaks are much better than Aston...coz I tried as Aston and I can say their Prime Ribeye is solid good but the rest are too dry and tough eventhough ordered medium rare...disappointed...

the bbq ribs highly recommended, the meat doesn't stick to the bones and was soft n chewy like chai siew. Price is affordable to students, hope they can last long, at least finally something decent in yishun !

After reading yr review of this place, I drove all the way from Seng Kang with my brother and his wife.... We took a gamble and order the Emperor Oriental Chix Salad, Moo Burger, Ribeye steak and some pasta...

One word--- It definitely doesnt live up to the hype as described... The steak was not well cooked and the taste is unevenly distributed...After eating a few bite of the steak.... we give up eating...

The Moo burger is horrid.... Took a few bite, the meat is tough.... After wasting our calories and money and time... We decided to drive to TuckShop and savour the steak burger...... We grade this place 2 out of 5.....

Good points of this place. Nice environment, free popcorns for diners and no GST and service charges..... Will not go back to this place again for this period of time......

Tried the Moo Burger, Steak Sandwish and Parmesan Coated Fish Fillet.

Apart from the steak sandwish, which we didn't enjoy as they overcooked the beef, the other two dishes we tried were good, albeit the burger could do away with the bbq sauce as it erodes the taste of the beef.

In all, great value priced meals.

Will definitely be back again to try the pastas and ribs which I spied other table devouring with gusto.

Heard that the "head" chef is no longer with the establishment...but nonetheless, I feel that certain standards are still being maintained...I still give credit to food items like Parmesan Dory Fillet, Pastas etc...

Went to Vittles first time on a Saturday night around 10:28pm. At that time, the staff were already closing (even when there are still a few people in the restaurant waiting for their food) and they declared to me that they are closed. It is when i saw the sign outside that they close at 11pm, and last order at 10:30 pm on saturday nights.

Hence, i blame myself for working too hard and knocking off too late on a saturday night, and unable to get a decent dinner.

Knowing their closing time, a couple of weeks later on a saturday night, i went back there, this time earlier. I reach there at 10:15pm, knowing this time i am well ahead of their last order time.

However, i was chased out again this time, the staff told me they are closed. This time i became furious, and i pointed out to them the sign outside the restaurant "Last order at 10:30pm". However, they still tell me they are closed and chased me (and my pregnant wife) away.

I'm never eating there again, a place that has no professionalism or integrity in maintaining their opening hours.

Dear Madsock,
I have already responded to your email to us 2 months ago complaining to me on this matter. I have clearly apologised & explained that we were dealing with some electrical technical problems in the kitchen on your 2nd visit which we were sorry that we have to turn away customers during that night (not just you - can you imagine how much sales I have lost?).
I have also offered my sincerest apologies to you by inviting you to our humble little restaurant so that we can present you a surprise as a token of appreciation for accepting our apologies.
In fact we were awaiting your response for more than 2 months & we are now glad to hear from you again here in this blog since May (after my response to your email).
Pls do not hesitate to contact Denise & quote your name as "Madsock".

Brought my colleagues to Vittles just 2 weeks ago. Have to say the food's really worth the pricve. One of them had the pasta which the portion was super big and it's only like 5 bucks! I myself tried the herb chicken thing, not bad. The Nanchos with cheese and salsa was great. Too bad the popcorn machine was not on, but kinda understand. its a boring tuesday evening. Overall, would give it a 4/5 rating. Will return to dine there again! This shall go down well with Astons (rocking potato salad!)
