Botak Jones: Unquarantinable Botak Fever

Actually Botak Jones started expanding just as I started this blog back in Aug 2006. But at that time I did not get around to blogging them. They would have made an interesting Ang Moh in the heartlands story. Now, just over a year and many other reviews later, Mr Jones has well and truly invaded the heartlands, taking major town centres one at a time. First it was Jurong, then Clementi, then Ang Moh Kio. Then they invaded Dempsey road and most recently they invaded the heartland of Bedok in the East. Seems like nothing is going to stop Botak fever!
So instead of being a discovery blog, now it seems that the blog is not complete without my review of the widely publicized triple burger ("Crazy or what!" Burger). Yes, it will not be complete without a picture of the ultimate male fantasy. (OK guys I know what you all are thinking but this is a G rated blog OK?)

There is really no reason for the existence of a triple patty burger except that it really does attract attention. Practically, there is no one in the world who would be able to actually eat the three patties and the bun all with one bite. (If there were, he would be in the annals of Ripley's Believe it or Not!)

So how is the Triple Burger? Well, those who love to eat lots of meat will not be disappointed. The patties were chunky, hand moulded and cooked medium. I had initially thought that the cheese was the common "Singles" type, but was pleasantly surprised that it was actually quite a nice and thick cheddar. Tastewise, it wasn't as beefy or as tasty as I would like, but at $14.50 (Plus $1 extra for each slice of cheese) I guess you can't be expecting them to use US Prime Chuck. Good texture, lots of meat but lacking the beefy ooomph! 3.75/5

Fish and Chips $6.50

Fish n Chips can be found in almost every coffeeshop and food centre nowadays and most can do a good job at deep frying. The only differentiating factor for most sub $10 fish n chips is whether they use the cheaper Cream Dory or the superior Pacific Dory. Both are catfish btw, but the Cream Dory is reared in ponds and tend to taste a little muddy. The other differentiating factor is whether they have a proper Tartare sauce and vinegar to go with the fish n chips. I am glad to report that Botak Jones uses Pacific Dory which is a good thing. But if you want to have a nice juicy fish, you will need to upgrade to the $10 portion as the $6.50 portion is a little on the thin side. They also serve it with a sort of Tartare sauce. I say "sort of" because the pickles were not really all that chunky, but it was still better than your standard mayonnaise. 4/5

Australian 200gm Ribeye Steak $14.50

I had a Botak Jones steak before last year and I felt at that time that it had too much herb seasoning on it. Good steak should not require anything more than salt and pepper. But then again, you don't expect a sub $20 steak to be prime quality do you? That aside, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the Australian Ribeye that day. Though the ribeye did fall apart, the doneness was just right and the flavour of the seasoning was not overpowering. So it was a juicy, enjoyable piece of meat that would please you if you are going for the sub $20 steak. 4/5

Conclusion

The Botak fever looks like it is going to spread to all parts of the island. The steak is reasonably priced but the fish n chips and some of the other items are not exactly that cheap. Foodwise, the flavors are distinctly un-Singaporean so you are not going to get Hainanese style western food. Botak Jones has already inspired other Ang Mohs to follow suit (Crazy Ang Moh) and I think we are going to see more Ang Mohs doing the same thing this coming year.

The patties look a lot better than the last time I tried, was minced too finely and not that juicy. Loved the lamb chops though...$13.50 for 300grams...

I thought I saw a Botak Jones in Bedok North too! I have been to the one in Toa Payoh several times (cos my friend works in that block) and boy, it gets really crowded in the evenings!

The $6.5 fish and chips is really thin, Prata thin!

I think the fish n chips are only so-so. The cajun chicken definitely tastes better than fish n chips

Does anyone know where did the AMK branch moved to. I went to the AMK branch 2 days ago, but the coffeeshop was closed??? Did they move somewhere else? If so, anyone knows where?

Hi, Botak Jones doesn't have a branch in Dempsey. It's in Depot Road, near the CMPB building (maybe that's why you got it confused?). The Depot Road outlet also has Spaghetti Jones, Botak's new pasta business. I haven't tried it yet... I'm fixated on their burgers (though I can only manage a single beef patty).

I hear it's over hyped.

Hmmm..just a qns... between Aston Specialties and Botak Jones, which is better. The reason why i am asking is because the nature of their business is rather similar in terms of pricing, range and probably quality..

Thanks alot in advance!

Aston's is in an aircon/restaurant environment, Botak Jones is in a coffeeshop. Food similar, price similar. In terms of burgers, ieat superburger is much better than the Crazy or what. Then again, the burger was instigated by me so my opinion is of course very biased.

They opened one in Depot Road too and I am going to try their fish and chips today.

Talking about fish.
CNY is just a week away. Does anybody know any of the english names to the fishes we eat during CNY and all the different kinds of fish usually used during CNY dishes.

Like "orh hee", "bek toe hee" and many more...

Beth,

Relax lah. The AMK Botak branch has just moved to another part of AMK. AMK Ave 10 where Cheng San Food Market is to be precise. Come in from CTE and exit thru AMK Ave 3. Keep to the right and make a right turn at the first junction. Then get ready to make a left turn at another junction. There u see a airy bright kopitiam fronted by a BJ signboard. Blk is 529.

Tried Botak Jones at 3 different outlets so far -

Toa Payoh - The 1st outlet I tried. Order the cajun chicken. The chicken was decent. Sides of coleslaw and fries were huge though and it was a overall satisfying meal for the price.

Clementi - 2nd outlet I tried. Order the 'Crazy or what' burger. It was disappointing. It was an overdose of beef and the patties weren't that flavorful. Sides were misery.

Bedok - Went twice. Lamb chops the 1st time round. Not much meat considering how the bones took up much of the 300g. Fish n Chips the 2nd time. It was just decent. Sides were better than Clementi but not as good as Toa Payoh.

After the initial euphoria I got at Toa Payoh, I've come to realise that the standards differ between outlets and it was much overhyped. For the same price range, I would rather go Aston's for their consistent quality and value. Recently went back for a nice steak and also tried the grand sampler (sausages). Thoroughly enjoyable and will look to try the ieat burger next time round.

Sigh... Does the Botak Ang Moh helmed the wok at any of the branches? No? Maybe that's why overhyped or standard dropped...

Used to be 1 of his customers when he first humbly started out at Tuas. Back then when I was still with the Navy, would always go to him for dinner after sailing back from exercises/operations.

Really missed the good old days... the good old food...

BTW, the Gumbo Soup is my favourite...

Cheers to 92 of 04-07
