Lim Kee Banana Fritters: Lost and Found!

With Damien and smart

Those of you who wonder whatever happened to the goreng pisang (Banana Fritters) at Somerset House will be happy to know that they are right here in Maxwell Food Centre. Yep, I even checked the newspaper cutting on the wall and it is the same person frying the goreng pisang albeit with a few more white hairs.

There used to be 3 branches of this stall but now this is the only one left. I guess with the increased emphasis on healthy eating, stuff that are deep fried have sort of been out of vogue. But then again that does not explain the recent doughnut fad. It could just be that the humble goreng pisang needs a makeover in marketing in order to spruce up renewed interest in this very traditional local snack.

Actually what would be great with goreng pisang is to eat it with Maple Syrup and Vanilla Ice Cream. Whooooooooahhh! Perhaps that should be the next stage in the evolution of the pisang goreng?

The pisang goreng here is still very good. The owner insists on using only Pisang Raja so you get a nice creamy and sweet caramelized banana within a light crispy coat of batter. 4/5 Come to think of it, cooked banana is the only other "creamy" fruit aside from durian and avocado. Are there any more, you think?

Conclusion

Anyone out there also want to see Goreng Pisang with ice cream and maple syrup?

How about the Chocolate Fruit. It's creamy, and it's like eating chocolate minus the fats and calories!

The goreng pisang at Longhouse Thomson Road is yummy too. I do love the Malay Style goreng pisang, something about the batter they use, reminds me of how the kids in my old neighbourhood would carry baskets of homemade pisang!

Thai Express has an interesting twist on the goreng pisang - Thai style!

Oh gee, I read your post one day late. My son was craving for goreng pisang last weekend (after watching a food show) and just yesterday, I happen to drop him at Maxwell Rd for him to pack his lunch. If I had known the pisang store is there, I would have asked him to buy some. We don't go there very much...

Hmmm the closest you can get to goreng pisang with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream would be the fried banana split at New York New York.. Although i doubt the banana fritters are as yummy as this one...

I like the goreng pisang sold at a stall at Geylang Serai Temporary Mkt (next to the famous epok stall) because it's not only good but also value for money - for $1 you get about 5-6 pieces cut from single giant bananas. The taste is about as good as those single ones. If you're there, try their sweet potato and fish keropok - my colleagues and family pronounced the latter to be outstanding especially as the fish taste comes across strong and pleasingly.

Thanks for sharing. We really missed all the good food back home in Singapore when we are far away in Canada. Will make a trip there when we are back in Singapore during the CNY.

Hi

Anyone knows where to find the 3-in-1 fried nian gao. I know old airport rd got one stall named 吃爽爽. The 3-in-1 means that the nian gao is sandwiched with a slice of sweet potato and a slice of yam. The fried durian is nice too.
